Ole Miss May Get Competition in Growing Legal MJ

Oxford, MS -- A judicial opinion may end the University of Mississippi's monopoly on growing marijuana for researchers in the United States.A field at the Oxford campus is the United States' only legal source of cannabis. Since 1968, the university has had contracts with the National Institute for Drug Abuse - competitively bid and renewed every three to five years - to grow the plant and distribute it as NIDA directs to researchers nationwide.
Dr. Lyle Craker, a horticulturist at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst petitioned the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to become a second grower of marijuana. He contends DEA's enforcement mission prejudices the agency against approving research projects that could show promise. "Science is based on replication," Craker told the Daily Journal. "I always worry when the agency that is charged with keeping people from using a substance is the one that controls all the research on it."Craker said some researchers have also expressed needs for varieties of marijuana not grown at Ole Miss - a more potent variety often found in The Netherlands, for example. Preliminary Ruling Administrative Judge Mary Ellen Bittner of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration issued an opinion last week that Craker should be allowed to grow the experimental drug. The ruling is only an initial step toward a possible second grower. Higher DEA officials could overrule Bittner's opinion. The agency's stated position is that "marijuana has no medical value that can't be met more effectively by legal drugs." Some researchers, however, say the drug and its derivatives show promise, especially to relieve pain and nausea in patients with cancer or AIDS.If Craker's petition is ultimately successful, his project will be funded by the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), which for two decades has promoted medical research of marijuana, MDMA ("ecstasy") and psychedelic drugs. While MAPS officially emphasizes academic efforts, some critics contend its leaders promote generalized drug legalization. The group's president, Rick Doblin, has served on the board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), which advocates removal of all penalties for personal marijuana use.Research professor Mahmoud ElSohly oversees the marijuana project as part of the National Center for Natural Products Research at Ole Miss and is a prominent marijuana researcher in his own right. Among his accomplishments in the field is a patent for a marijuana rectal suppository that eliminates the risks of smoking. The technology also lessens the psychological effects common to smoking marijuana and reduces the risk of abusing the drug.ElSohly could not be reached Friday for comment on Bittner's ruling.Picture of Mississippi Farm: http://gallery.marihemp.com/albums/public_domain_free/miss2.jpgSource: Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (Tupelo, MS)Author: Errol Castens, Daily Journal Oxford BureauPublished: February 19, 2007 - Section A, Page 1 Copyright: 2007 Journal Publishing CompanyContact: lloyd.gray djournal.comWebsite: http://www.djournal.com/Related Articles & Web Sites:MAPShttp://www.maps.org/ NORMLhttp://www.norml.org/Marijuana Research a New Field at UMass?http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread22654.shtmlJudge Tells U.S. To Grow More Pothttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread22646.shtmlJudge Sides with Botanist on Pot Supplyhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread22640.shtml

Lou Dobbs
They start it out featuring the controversial children's book, "It's Just A Plant." [ http://www.justaplant.com/index.html ] Making a point of saying it was aimed at "6 to 12-year-olds." A cheap way to establish this is about kids. A prohibitionist "grass roots" group is featured who cry that the book "totally neutralizes the idea that there may be anything hazardous associated with using it!" - Right. Finally we get to who's behind marijuana legalization, and yep, it's Soros, Lewis and Sperling. Big surprise. And no pictures of the Seattle Hempfest, of course. So it's just those 3 crazy rich guy's fault. Despite videos of them walking around, they didn't interview any of them - which would seem an obvious thing to do. Instead they moaned about the money, then cut to who's getting most of it, MPP - with Rob Kampia saying, "I have to laugh when people think that we're a well-funded legalization machine. My response to that is, Hey. I'd take the government's budget over our budget any day!" Thus painting a picture of a flippant Kampia who is after the government's budget. So you'd think they'd compare budgets, but no, they just loudly announce (with big flashing letters across the screen) $25 million --- is what the crazy rich guys spent to legalize marijuana. Of course they top it off with the "grass roots" prohibition folks moaning some more about how legalization would destroy their messages even more. Then, by a great coincidence, the next story is about a marijuana bust of "a Mexican man" at the border. How often does Lou Dobbs do a drug bust story? Thus going full circle to the beginning of marijuana prohibition in an excercise demonizing marijuana and Mexicans.

Congressman Mark Souder's accomplishments.
Some days ago, CNEWSers exposed the transcript where Republican Congressman Mark Souder of Indiana is quoted as stating, today’s cannabis (kaneh bosm / marijuana) is, “more like cocaine.”(read Transcript: Tucker Carlson, aired Feb. 9, 2007 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17115678/ ). -0-That is interesting because today at MAP ( http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/ ),there is a story titled: US IN: Fentanyl Around, Coke Coming Backhttp://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v07/n210/a04.html?397from Souder's home state, exposing that Coke (is) Coming BackReporting, "an apparent resurgence in cocaine popularity." -0-I wonder...When citizens try “today’s” cannabis and realize it is safer than alcohol are they more likely to believe cocaine is no worse?&When government lies about cannabis how will youth know they are telling any truth about honest hard drugs like cocaine, meth and heroin?&Is Souder partly to blame?420Souder seems like a staff germ to America.

It was interesting. It was talking about how much money the DPA and MPP get per year. It was a huge amount of money. It made my jaw drop. There will be more on tomorrows show. They did mention that marijuana isn't as shunned as it was. They mentioned the children again. I wish we didn't have to talk about the children. This is for adults. It isn't legal for a person to drink until they come of age. Mayan you're welcome.

"Science is based on replication," Craker told the Daily Journal. "I always worry when the agency that is charged with keeping people from using a substance is the one that controls all the research on it."Science is about learning and discovering the truth. The truth is is the enemy of the government for they thrive in the darkness and rely upon our ignorance. The cannabis plant is a means to the truth so it's no wonder it is banned in all of it's forms. Thanks for the poll, FoM. Action, if you will.
Dear MoveOn member,On Friday the House voted to condemn the president's plan to escalate the war. A good first step. But we have to keep moving. The night before the vote, Rep. Jack Murtha—who's been leading the fight to stop the escalation—told MoveOn members, "The time to act is now...We can get this done. We can bring our troops home."Congress is in recess this week and we need to keep the pressure on. This Thursday, MoveOn members are showing up at hundreds of local congressional offices to deliver letters asking Congress to stop the escalation. The more of us who add our voices, the more pressure they'll feel to act. Can you take a moment to write a short letter that other MoveOn members will hand-deliver for you on Thursday?http://pol.moveon.org/lettertocongress/?id=9899-6910519-N0gxz0&t=2Rep. Murtha told MoveOn members that the most important thing we could do during this critical week is write letters to our representatives and visit them while they're home for recess. With progress being made in the House, but a handful of Senate Republicans continuing to dodge the most important debate in the country, his call to action couldn't be more timely.1The president is out of control and Congress has to rein him in. President Bush's plan to deal with the mess in Iraq is to escalate the military conflict. He's not just escalating war in Iraq, he's provoking an escalation with Iran—a confrontation that could inflame the entire Middle East. This is a situation of the most serious proportions and we have to make sure Congress stops him. We've made a lot of progress together since January alone. Through petitions, calls to Congress, rallies, movie nights and other work we've done together, we've helped make it clear that a vast majority of Americans oppose escalating the war.If we keep the pressure on now, we can make sure Congress does the right thing by blocking the escalation and taking steps to bring our troops home. Can you write a letter to your representative and senators that we will hand-deliver this Thursday? That's great about the poll. I didn't like it because it brings up the children and this is about adult's rights to pick a safer choice. At the end it was mentioned that marijuana is become more ok in society's eyes and that is true. I see pot humor now more then ever on tv.
