NFL's Buzzkill: No Beer at Giants Stadium

Washington, D.C. -- There was far less "buzz" than usual during the NFL season's final regular season Monday night football game between the New York Jets and the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, and it had little to do with the Jets' dire season record. Rather, the ennui of the tens of thousands of atypically subdued fans in attendance could best be summed up in three words, prominently displayed on makeshift signs throughout ABC's nationwide telecast: "We want beer!"That's right, beer.
Following a string of violent incidents - including a pair of stabbings - between rowdy football fans during the team's previous games, Giants Stadium officials made the bold move to halt sales of the intoxicant. The rationale for the ban? Jets spokesman Ron Colangelo could not have been more blunt: "It's for the safety of our fans."Alcohol's long-standing association with aggressive behavior, whether it's among raucous sports fans or late-night bar patrons, is well-publicized and much debated. Yet, a relevant fact that is often overlooked in this public discourse is that an alternative, almost equally consumed intoxicant, is rarely, if ever, linked with violence - marijuana. However, unlike alcohol, marijuana is illegal and not only at Giants Stadium.Regardless, no credible research has shown cannabis use to be a causal factor in violence, aggression or delinquent behavior, dating back to the U.S. government's "First Report of the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse' in 1972, which concluded, "In short, marijuana is not generally viewed by participants in the criminal justice community as a major contributing influence in the commission of delinquent or criminal acts." (The Commission went on to recommend Congress remove all criminal and civil penalties on the possession of small amounts of the drug, a recommendation that Congress and then-President Richard Nixon promptly ignored.)A more recent federal review by the Canadian Senate reaffirmed: "Cannabis use does not induce users to commit other forms of crime. Cannabis use does not increase aggressiveness or anti-social behavior." In contrast, research has demonstrated that certain legal drugs, most notably alcohol, do induce aggressive behavior."Cannabis differs from alcohol in one major respect. It does not seem to increase risk-taking behavior," stated the British Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs in its 2002 report recommending the depenalization of marijuana. (Parliament eventually did so in 2004.) "This means that cannabis rarely contributes to violence either to others or to oneself, whereas alcohol use is a major factor in deliberate self-harm, domestic accidents and violence."British soccer fans recently experienced this lesson first hand after their team's opening loss to Portugal at the Euro 2000 tournament in the Netherlands. According to news reports, the British fans - whose reputation for post-game, alcohol-fueled tirades is known worldwide - took the loss without incident and not a single fan was arrested after the match. The Dutch secret to keeping the peace - a clamp down on alcohol and regulated access to cannabis.Yet, while alcohol enjoys its status as the unofficial sports drink of the NFL, law enforcement continue to spend billions of taxpayers' dollars annually arresting more than 750,000 Americans for doing nothing more than possessing or smoking small amounts of pot. Perhaps if the situation was reversed, fans in Giants Stadium and throughout the NFL could enjoy their games in peace.Paul Armentano is the senior policy analyst for NORML and the NORML Foundation in Washington.Newshawk: Paul ArmentanoSource: Washington Examiner (DC)Author: Paul ArmentanoPublished: Thursday, January 12, 2006Copyright: 2006 Washington ExaminerContact: threads dcexaminer.comWebsite: http://www.dcexaminer.com/NORMLhttp://www.norml.org/CannabisNews NORML Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/NORML.shtml

Just Something Some Might Like To Check Out
I am listening to Rust Radio. Dedicated fans of Neil Young have made an audio book of Shakey and are reading it and it started on the 13th and goes thru the 16. They play different songs thruout the audio book reading and I really am enjoying catching what I have been able too. This is a labor of love and it just reminds me how much can be done if we just want to really do something. Have a great rest of the weekend and keep on rockin in a free world.http://www.rustradio.org/

I said in #38 that maybe they should have a beer section and a non drinking section. The more I thought about it the more I realized it wouldn't work. They'd have to sound proof the drinking section and that would never work. I guess my wishful thinking isn't very logical! LOL!

Thanks For The Advice
Even though we are in the country most of the homes are new that are out here and we are very close to a State Park that the water supplies a city. You aren't allowed to have more then 1 house on 5 acres but it might be 2 houses per 5 acres now. The water is an issue since the lake can't be affected. Our septic system alone requires a 1500 septic tank and 500 feet of leach field per home. We do have a good lawyer and if they come back again we will get in touch with him. It would hurt more then us but many people who have bought land and built nice homes. If we have to fight we will but I also know they would have to pay us if they push us and I could start again but the problem is where do people go if they keep wanting a person's land? I am a fighter but I also know when it isn't worth it to fight too.

About Oil Organizations FoM
I know a little case History about the oil companies' legal battles in Texas in the early 1900s. I don't know the law in California, but in Texas the law in regard to minerals is honed to a fine edge against the rights of private property owners, and oil companies play very dirty. Might as well at least take a look at their proposed leases and royalties, and then take it up with a competent lawyer or two to get a legal opinion. If the money is good enough, it might be worth it to find another suitable property before you end up in an adverse legal proceeding. On the other hand, you could become wealthy enough to single handedly overturn the Federal Mairjuana Laws, or at least retire in Amsterdam. LOL

I don't mean to frighten you but you might want to talk to a lawyer if some powerful company is interested in your land. I don't know how much a lawyer could do but they could probably explain if your home is threatened as I don't know a lot about eminent domain. The supremes greatly expanded it last summer when they ruled that municipalities can seize homes for use by private developers. Here's a link regarding a current case in your state. Off Topic But Something That Bothers Me
I guess our property is sitting on oil. They came back and want us to lease our land. They want to drill holes and blast. I am so offended and of course the oil guy doesn't know why. We have good water. When you live in the country water is vital since that's the only way you can get it by a deep water well. Blasting can cause cracks in the rocks and you can lose your water. I wish that oil people would go away and not come back and leave us alone. Maybe they will but I also know they might not since I searched and found out that our area is oil rich. If they wreck all the rural land what will be left for future generations? Pictures of pretty country landscapes? Thanks for reading my rant. We sure aren't interested in any offers they have.

It's now 50 and is suppose to snow tomorrow. It's raining here currently. The grass is growing, trees are trying to bud and soon I expect to see a robin or two. We need a deep freeze to keep bugs under control. When we have a mild winter spring and summer brings more bugs. We had a serious drought this past summer but we have had a good deal of rain spaced nicely so it soaks in and it will have replenished the water table which makes me happy. No water no one can live.

I don't want alcohol re-criminalized. I think that Neil might do a small tour with Prairie Wind this year and we want to see him one more time. Who knows if it could be his last tour so it is important to us. What I minded so much was drunk people yelling out ( southern man or Ohio ) while Neil was trying to tell us the story between songs in Greendale and swearing at him by shouting F$# ^% you! He calmly but was irritated yelled F$#%$ you too!. It distracted him and it sure distracted me. It was very shocking to see this kind of rudeness since I don't go to sports events or concerts except the two concerts by Neil. When we sat down to watch and hear the concert I was always taught to be polite in a public event and not to get up unless necessary. People were up and down and carrying multiple beers and making people have to pay attention to them rather then Neil. Maybe they should have a beer section and a non drinking section. That would be a fair beginning to help those who are offended by drunkenness.

I enjoy a few beers on the weekend but I sometimes get offended by folks who can't handle their alcohol also. I also believe that with freedom comes responsibility but in a way it sometimes seems that freedom and responsibility are polar opposites. There are always going to be people who will abuse any given right or freedom but I don't think those freedoms should be taken from everyone. By alcohol being legal it gives us a HUGE aguing point by which we can point out the hypocrisy of cannabis prohibition. SAFER has been doing a great job of using that tactic. Imho, if alcohol was to be recriminalized then cannabis would never be legal. As it is now, even those who don't pay much attention to our issue are noticing the blinding hypocrisy and that is a very good thing.

Yeah, it's going to 63 degrees here today, it's been Springtime for weeks and the flowers are starting to come up, and where I live we usually have winter this time of year.Another interesting thing I read recently, the major hurricanes of the last season had massive lightning while they were over open sea. This is something that they never see, because hurricanes aren't supposed to have vertical winds (although upwelling can occur at landfall). In almost every way, the weather is completely weird lately.

Your welcome on the card trick. I know it freaks people out and I am more than happy to help unfreak em.I know what you mean about watching golf. I am a fan of it cause I do "try" to play it. Playing golf with a buzz has worked sometimes and other times it hasn't. Haven't figured that one out just yet. But golf courses are the great outdoors and driving a golf cart stoned around the course is fun even if your game isn't that day. However watching it on TV is still tough unless it is a major event and I am really stoned and strumming the guitar. If you have ever attempted the game then you really can appreciate it when you see what someone like Tiger Woods can do. If I could do what he does I would feel like 80 million a year is about right too!!!Go Carolina!!!

Football and cannabis (a good mix!)
My buddy and I are big fans of our local NFL team. We've been going to the home games together for the last ten years. We smoke a little before the game, but not too much because it's usually around 10 in the morning when we are leaving for the game. But we have our halftime ritual down to a science. We run down three flights of stairs (sometimes taking an extra few seconds to "narc" on the lazy-a** cigarette smokers who illegally smoke in the stairwells - hey if I have to take it outside, so do they!), hustle across the street to a park by our domed stadium, each powersmoke our own joint (if you don't pass it back and forth and you stay upwind up folks, everybody just thinks your another nicotine fiend), then sprint back UP three flights of stairs and are back in our seats before the 12 minute halftime is even over.No way I could do that if I was drunk, or if I smoked cigs. I'd be wheezing, or puking, or both.Druing the game, all around us idiots are swilling bad quality beer that costs $6 or $8 bucks a cup (I don't really know, I've never bought any there.) Mostly people are well behaved in our section, but the few times I've seen people get really obnoxious, belligerent, and foulmouthed was because they were seriously drunk. I don't like drunks very much.Patrick - I very much agree with your comments about football being a team sport. I don't like seeing anyone get badly hurt on either team, but I love the effort, the passion, and individual players combining to function as a powerful unit.Also...thanks for explaining the card trick. I hadn't seen that one before, and it was starting to bug me!I sure wish there were more public venues in which one could safely use cannabis. I've been to too many concerts or to see bands playing in a bar, where the people just turn into shuffling, dead-eyed zombies from too much alcohol. They step on your feet or crash into you obliviously, they have a bad tendency to puke or take a leak in very inappropriate places, and of course, there's always the obnoxious, loud, belligerent ones who are just spoiling for a fight. Wheee, what a lot of fun (NOT.)No offense intended to those of you who drink within their limits, or are at least pleasant drunks.Anyway, I love cannabis, I love football, and I love them both together. I don't know if there's any drug that could make me love watching golf, though.Joe Citizen.

Thanks. I just find Football really funny. There is no logic to it for me. It's a guy thing really. It shows that we all are different but we also should be tolerant of how others feel too. That is all I want for Cannabis. People don't have to like it and we don't need to flaunt it in the faces of those who are offended but we want the right to exist I believe.

FoM no problem & The Card Trick?
My rant was that when someone calls something that others may find enjoyable “ridiculous and barbaric” or whatever negative comment about any topic it is easy to feel like the comment is also directed at the people who also happen to enjoy the game. Sorta the same way we take offense when the anti’s tell lies about cannabis. You merely said what was true for you and that was simply that you don’t much care for the game of football and I certainly don’t find that type of comment the least bit offensive. So when someone comments that they found the game ridiculous and barbaric it’s really no big deal. That’s just an example of ones opinion. But when someone sez the game “is” what there negative opinion of it is? Well, I just wanted to point out the difference in the two types of comments or thoughts. The latter train of thought reminds me of a racist’s logic not that I understand that either. Anyway, if we all liked the same things the world would be a boring place in my humble opinion. That Card Trick had been around since the former vice president invented the internet.None of the face cards on the first screen are shown on the second screen so it doesn’t matter what card you pick! After two or three tries years ago I figured it out as most do but I have seen that trick freak people out and actually scare a few of them.

I wanted to add that I wouldn't go to a bar because that is where people drink and that is their place and that's fine and that's the way it should be. How can people who are offended by drunk people go to any events and know that they can have a good time too? I sure don't want alcohol to be prohibited but don't we need to think about people who don't drink when it comes to some events or must we just not go to any events. Does that not stifle some people and that takes their freedom to enjoy events away. It really is more then drinking or not drinking but responsibility to me.

Good point Mayan
Restricting alcohol failed once before. Unfortunately we have not yet convinced the powers that be that we are making the same error by prohibiting cannabis. I have smoked cannabis for more years than I have not and I feel more in tune with Mick Jagger than Dick Cheney. That was a very good point FoM.Regarding sports and football in general. I think that while football is a violent game and some here consider it "barbaric" remember it is only a game. But unlike golf it is a team sport. If you don't grasp the team concept or have chemistry as a team you won't win. Maybe that is why we struggle to end cannabis prohibition. To many people doing there own damn thing instead of uniting like a team to win. Sorry for the rant but I like sports and count football and golf among my favorites. I might ad hunting to that list even as violent as it is. Please just don't confuse the type of violence in some sports like football or martial arts or boxing with the violence caused by alcohol induced idiots. Granted driving under the influence of alcohol is stupid and dangerous but I don't think it should be banned at bars and sporting events. This is a stretch but I could die in a car accident so perhaps cars should be illegal? That is how a prohibitionist thinks.

My husband even said now we'll have to watch the Superbowl just to see the Stones and it doesn't interest him either. I want to know why they sell Beer at sporting events knowing that people will be drunk and be on the roads?

Beer?
What beer? We don't need no stinking beer.Get that sweet smoke into the stands, too, the football players get enough of it already.Do you think Robert Parrish, former Boston Celtic, has quit smoking the herb? How many championships did they win while he was playing for the Kelts?Cannabis is a gateway for champions.
