Bill Prohibits Sale of Hemp Flavored Candies

Michigan -- Marijuana may be off limits in Michigan but marijuana-flavored candies with names like Stoner Pops and Chronic Candy are perfectly legal and at least one state lawmaker is pushing for a change. Following a trend of state and cities cracking down on marijuana and hemp-flavored candies critic say send a bad message to kids, state Rep. Dudley Spade, D-Tipton, has proposed a bill to amend Michigan's penal code to ban the sale of candy and other confections that contain hemp, hemp flavoring or marijuana flavoring. Violations would result in up to one year in jail, a $5,000 fine or both.
"Drug use is among the top issues law enforcement officers deal with in terms of crimes among young people," said Spade, who is also working with the state attorney general's office to determine if some of the ingredients in pot-flavored candies are already illegal, making the product illegal. "We just don't need this kind of product out there and so easy to purchase. It's just a temptation we don't need." The bill does not cover Internet sales, which involves interstate commerce issues. Spade said his initial intent is to get such treats off retail shelves. Michigan isn't the first state to consider a crackdown on pot or hemp-flavored treats. Chicago banned it and Illinois, Texas and other states are considering similar bans. But hemp supporters say such proposed bans unfairly lump pot-flavored candies with hemp candies, which are made with hemp seed oil and is legal under federal government standards. Pot-flavored candies are made from cannabis flower essential oil. And while the candies don't cause a high, some hemp supporters say the oil may not be covered under the U.S. Controlled Substances Act. Hemp and marijuana are cousin plants but hemp does not contain tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the ingredient in marijuana that gives users a high. "Hemp and marijuana are not the same," said Tim Beck, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. "It's a gimmick to sell a product because of the lure of forbidden fruit." Mark Gresser of St. Clair Shores thinks Michigan's proposed ban is ridiculous. "It's crazy," Gresser said. "It's sterile candy. That'd be like someone saying you can't wear hemp clothing because it'll lead you to pot." Spade said he first stumbled upon pot-flavored candy while shopping for a birthday present at Spencer Gifts, a novelty store, at a local mall. There, by the cash register, were Pot Suckers. He worries the products are aimed at kids. "The concern is that it glorifies marijuana to make it seem cool and OK," Spade said. At least one distributor has already yanked its pot-flavored lollipops from store shelves because of its controversial nature. But Steven Trachtenberg, president of ICUP Inc. -- which distributed Pot Suckers lollipops and pulled them from shelves in July -- said Pot Suckers were aimed at an older market and it's ridiculous and unfounded to suggest marijuana-flavored candy would lead to future drug use. "We have to wake up and look at parenting skills, our education system," he said. "We're being used as a scapegoat for a problem that's not going to be exacerbated by a fricking lollipop." Note: A state lawmaker who proposed the legislation says those sweets could lead children to drugs.Complete Title: Bill Prohibits Sale of Hemp, Marijuana-Flavored CandiesSource: Detroit News (MI)Author: Maureen Feighan, The Detroit NewsPublished: Tuesday, October 11, 2005Copyright: 2005 The Detroit News Contact: letters detnews.com Website: http://www.detnews.com/ Related Articles & Web Sites: Michigan NORMLhttp://www.minorml.org/Cannabis News Hemp Linkshttp://freedomtoexhale.com/hls.htmDebate Over Pot Candy Hones in on Ingredientshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread21096.shtmlBacklash Against Hemp Lollipops is Misguided http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread20943.shtml

I saw that plant in Harrisburg many times and always wondered what it would be like to live so close to something like that. It was many years later when I was in Hershey that I mentioned to someone else that after 3 Mile Island, who would actually want to live so close to a nuclear power plant; I was then informed that this particular plant was indeed the notorious 3 Mile Island. :-)

It wasn't the chocolate in Hershey Town that made you sick - more likely - it was 3 Mile Island! ;-)

The town smelling like chocolate.
There are certainly worse things a town can smell like. How does that effect a person after they become accustomed to it? Do they grow to detest the smell? Do they consume a lot of chocolate there?

Lights
I was just looking for lights and yes they are still available. We won't get our new living room finished until next year but I will slowly get to decorate it the way I really want to. It's a big room. It's 14 feet by 24 feet and it will be fun to do cool lights and music and a tv. They had these loungers for 2 people years ago and one of them would be great too.

lighting of interest
Oh yes...it is. My granddaughters have lamps in every shape, size, fabric and color you can imagine. They have lava lights...strobes...disco balls...strung decorative lights...every day is Christmas type lights. They have lamps trimmed in maribou...twinkles...glitters...Homework is a party type lights. Peace symbols have never gone away...they just pop up here and there in the most unexpected places and times. Lights are really big with kids though...and the fiber optics are even more breathtaking than some of them were in the olden days.

I know what I'd say...
to a child should he make a request for one of the lollipops in question. "Two dollars for a sucker? No. Choose again."Makes me think of the “Virgin Bloody Mary's” my ten year old was devouring one right after another, like tomato juice, one Sunday evening at a nice restaurant in Dallas after a Cowboys game.Which reminds me that I don't even like football...and that week I attended two junior highschool games Thursday evening. Highschool, Friday Evening. College Saturday evening. The Cowboys ...Sunday. I wasn't all that happy by the time multiple five dollar glasses of tomato juice were being consumed with abandon.

Would you want your small child eating candy with these names? I am against prohibition here and all for responsible adult use of cannabis, but these idiots are getting just what they asked for. A good business person would never go toward a possible revenue loss by giving a product a risky name as they have done. What did they expect?

If I was a police person and I didn't want to get into a bad situation while out doing patrol or whatever it is called how would a good day be? A good day would be when you don't have a confrontation with people and no one points a gun at you. If a police person had a choice between trying to find and arrest Meth Makers and users or a Pot Farmer which one will be easier? That's the way I see it. Suckers
If you are a coke-snortin' drinker that is an enlisted officer in the Texas Air National Guard, go awol for awhile, then you can be selected President and can fly around in a 747.If you serve your country, receive a back injury while serving, smoke cannabis to relieve your pain, then you will end up in the hoosegow. Steve Tuck can suffer. It is better to snort coke, drink like a fish and feign that you are serving your country, when you really aren't, than it is to actually do it. It's a great country.Arresting cannabis users is like taking candy from a baby.back to other stuff. Question: Is it ok to smoke cannabis while George Bush is President?Answer: Yes, it is.It's ok to smoke cannabis. It's ok.
