Alterna Blankets San Francisco With Hemp Bus Posters! SAN FRANCISCOAlterna, the maker of drug-free hemp hair-care products, rolled out its pro-hemp awareness campaign in San Francisco on Jan. 1, 1999.
San Franciscans are seeing the thought-provoking image of Alterna's drug-free hemp leaf on almost every bus in the downtown area, which is generating a local dialog on industrial hemp. The campaign was created to promote the truth and dispel misinformation regarding hemp through educating the public about the proven vast benefits of hemp. "The bus posters create an opportunity for San Franciscans to talk about hemp," explained Mike Brady, vice president of sales and marketing. "In 1999 an estimated $350 million will be spent on industrial hemp worldwide, and in 2001 that figure will jump to $1 billion. Industrial hemp is not a drug. It's an ecological and economical burgeoning commodity that cannot be ignored. "It's used in personal care items like Alterna as well as clothing, carpeting, foodstuffs, paper and a host of other environmentally friendly products," Brady added. This is not the first time San Francisco has seen Alterna's drug-free hemp leaf. Last November Alterna challenged the citizens of San Francisco to consider a very poignant question. Emblazoned on a billboard on Second Street and Brannon, the question asked: "Would you rather learn about (drug-free) hemp or continue to spoil the planet? LEARN MORE. Ask your local Teacher, Mayor or Chief of Police." Citizens called the toll-free number on the billboard with questions and were sent an information package on hemp. The education campaign also ran in Los Angeles, San Diego and New York. Although some citizens already know that hemp is not a drug, vast numbers of the public are not aware of the differences between hemp and marijuana. There are so many pernicious myths out there that the documented facts of hemp's true identity -- the vast environmental and economic benefits -- have been buried. Alterna pledges a plain and simple truth: Hemp is not marijuana and hemp is not a drug. Alterna's campaigns are aimed at dispelling the myths and misinformation through education. Dedicated to this cause, Alterna is offering high school students in San Francisco a college scholarship to the winner of its industrial hemp essay contest. Applicants are to call Kimberlee Mitchell at 888/4-ALTERNA ext. 258 for contest details. Known for its innovation in professional hair care, Alterna added THC (drug)-free hemp seed oil to its products in January 1998. Hemp seed oil is one of nature's richest sources of essential amino and fatty acids available to date. Its essential fatty acids help to restore hair's radiant shine, volume and smooth texture, while the amino acids help to strengthen the hair. Alterna's precedent-setting combination of cosmetic hemp seed oil and its exclusive enzymetherapy complex, forms a powerful duo that helps the hair assimilate and utilize proteins, vitamins, minerals and amino acids for improved keratin formation. Unconventional in its approach, Alterna consistently sets new standards in the beauty industry in the fields of advanced formulation and product performance. The first professional hair-care company to harness the power of nutrient-rich hemp seed oil in January of 1997, Alterna continually redefines itself as an industry innovator.
