Getting baked, smoking up, toking or partaking in an herbal refreshment. Whatever you call it, it amounts to the same thing: getting stoned.Every year, burnouts from disparate backgrounds join together for the common purpose of getting high. April 20, or 4/20, marks a marijuana-smoking holiday for stoners nationwide, and droves of pot devotees utilize this holiday as an opportunity to smoke themselves silly.
"I think that it's the people who smoke infrequently or not at all who get the biggest kick out of pointing out 4:20 on the calendar and on the clock," said Andrew Yaksic, a freshman sociology major at Harvard University. "I'll be smoking, but it'll just be a coincidence." The holiday itself has a nebulous beginning. One myth claims that police use the number 420 to signal a marijuana possession arrest. Drug users in the 1960s co-opted the term as a snub at the law enforcement community. Another competing and less popular story links the 4/20 holiday with Adolph Hitler's birthday. The Internet is rampant with Web sites created by loyal pot-smokers claiming they personally invented the term - and each webmaster claims his own unique origin. Regardless of the factual history, the day's goal remains universal."Last year we had an all-out, three-day party, smoking until the state of retardation was achieved," said Steven Prior, a freshman in The Martin J. Whitman School of Management and the School of Information Studies. "This year it'll probably be the same."Not all marijuana users have enthusiastic feelings about April 20. Some people in the cannabis-smoking community look down on the drug-induced excesses of the day and see it as an affront to the essence of the activity."When I hear people talking about 4/20 and how high they're going to get, I think of what pathetic wastes they are," said Zak Koeske, a freshman in the S.I Newhouse School of Public Communications and psychology dual major. "I don't have a problem with people who want to smoke, or smoke extra on 4/20, but people who want to talk about it, and act like they're so excited for it, are just jokes."Complete Title: Smokers Celebrate Joys of Marijuana on Drug's Unofficial HolidaySource: Daily Orange, The (NY Edu)Author: Mary StotlerPublished: Tuesday, April 20, 2004Copyright: 2004 The Daily Orange CorporationContact: news dailyorange.comWebsite: http://www.dailyorange.com/Related Articles:Pot Smokers Abuzz Over 420 'Holiday'http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread18678.shtmlWhen 4:20 Rolls Along Do You Light Up http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16002.shtmlWhat Time Is It?
