Hollywood -- The Marijuana Policy Project said Tuesday that a group of celebrities, led by actress Michelle Phillips, had joined an effort to expand its influence.Phillips, whose initial claim to fame came as a member of the 60's folk rock group The Mamas and the Papas, launched the campaign with a letter to colleagues in the entertainment industry soliciting support for MPP's efforts to liberalize U.S. anti-marijuana laws.
"Arresting adult marijuana users does nothing to keep marijuana out of the hands of children, but arresting adults does tear families apart and ruin careers. I support MPP because it is the most professional and credible organization working to change these harmful policies," the letter says.Joining Phillips in the effort, the MPP says, are a coterie of notables including former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, comedian Bill Maher and former Clinton Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders. The Marijuana Policy Project claims 15,000 members and 70,000 e-mail subscribers nationwide, making it the largest marijuana policy reform organization in the United States. I haven't really heard anything about the 90-day public comment period other than what was in the article. I'll post if I find anything.

also, if their product works and gets sold ..
lifepoint inc has a saliva testing unit in development, although it looks like they are running out of cash and credibility even among their investors...the [slightly] good news for us is that they claimed to detect THC and not a metabolite, thus being a actuall impairment based test .... although i have some doubts based on results they claimed ... they also say 2-5 day detection window for "some drugs" and i don't see how that could be detecting non metabolised THCif any hard data ever comes out i will post it.[note: they claim to have macines placed in 10 locations around the US, drug courts and general cop shops doing testing and validation]http://www.lifepointinc.com/

Annette Funicello and the perfect storm
The news of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling brings the perfect storm that has been gathering for some time. People in California could have absolutely legal cannabis for all the things that doctors can recommend it for. It is so ubiquitous and the harm so little, there is no reason to deny it for rest or peace, calm or slumber. Then you add in the GW Pharma introduction and public resistance will be gone. But what would make it all a perfect storm is for Annette Funicello, now around 62 and with MS and foundation for neurological disorders, to announce use and support of cannabis. It could well happen when all illegality is gone. It would make for a perfect storm.

Gov't Workers May Face Drug Test Changes: http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-3948248,00.htmlBy LEIGH STROPE AP Labor Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - The hair, saliva and sweat of federal workers could be tested for drug use under a government policy proposed Tuesday that could set screening standards for millions of private employers. The proposal will expand the methods to detect drug use among 1.6 million federal workers beyond urine samples. It is being implemented with an eye toward the private sector, however, because it would signal the government's approval for such testing, which many companies are awaiting before adopting their own screening programs. The rule is subject to a 90-day public comment period. A final plan could be issued by year's end.

Don't forget NORML's list
NORML maintains a list of the celebrities who've been arrested.....in the typical style of American Hypocrisy, this list is about 10 times bigger than MPP's list of the ones who admit it:http://www.norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=4413

Seriously: Missy Elliott
Missy Elliott just won some Grammies for her last album, and on it was a song Pass That Dutch. It's a nice dance tune. She says Pass that Dutch about 100 times in the song.Pass the dutch, baby Woooodie Hoooooooooooo
Pop that jiggle that fat don't stop till your clothes get wet.She comes from a background of trauma, so it makes sense that she's been around Nature's trauma medication:http://www.missy-elliott.com/Here's a quote from her site:What makes her accomplishments truly amazing is that Missy Elliott the superstar is, at the heart of it all, still just the shy little girl from Portsmouth, VA - a survivor of a childhood of domestic violence. Particularly, her father was abusive towards her mother. Missy has not shied away from talking about those painful memories. In fact, she was named spokesperson for Break The Cycle in 2003, an organization dedicated to helping young people break the chain of domestic abuse.

Oops,
I forgot to include the other one:Famous Drug Usershttp://www.soveriegn.freeservers.com/drugs.htmWouldn't John Travolta be a great addition? As I understand it, he had a very close relationship with an actress who died of a cancer that cannabis could have helped in treating. Just a thought!

Press Release from The Marijuana Policy Project
MPP Launches New Celebrity Campaign, and You Can Help
April 6, 2004Dear Friend:I am happy to announce the launch of an exciting new effort to enlist celebrities and other well-known public figures to speak out on behalf of the Marijuana Policy Project. Please visit http://www.mpp-vip.org to learn all about this new campaign. In the coming months, MPP's new director of VIP relations, Francis DellaVecchia, will be liaising with celebrities and arranging gala fundraisers, concerts, and other events ... and he can use your help. If you (1) have contacts with celebrities or other public figures, or (2) would like to volunteer at or assist with upcoming events, particularly if you live in southern California, please e-mail Francis at francis mpp.org.Recently, actor/singer Michelle Phillips, of The Mamas and The Papas, helped kick off MPP's VIP campaign by sending a letter to more than 100 celebrities, urging them to join her on MPP's advisory board, along with television host Bill Maher, former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, M.D., author Mike Gray, and others. Why do we need your help? Because celebrity endorsements help MPP to gain media attention, which serves to get our message to a wider audience and increases our credibility with the public. For instance, in recent weeks, MPP placed op-eds by Dr. Elders in several newspapers, urging state legislators to pass MPP's medical marijuana legislation. With your help, MPP will encourage celebrities to speak out in state legislatures and in Congress, on television, and in print. To get involved, please e-mail Francis at francis mpp.org. And if you're as excited about this bold campaign as we are, please visit http://www.mpp-vip.org/contribute to support our work with a financial contribution. Thank you.Sincerely,Rob KampiaExecutive DirectorMarijuana Policy ProjectWashington, D.C.

Jay Leno get Vegas to book the Cannabis Tour
The people are crying out for a Matrix movie of how testing will laybare the human being. A protest song with all the powerful voices in the Industry have worked in the past and will work now. The first step will be to get { Acts in Vegas } book the Cannabis tour, with Leap speakers and Pols like Gov. Johnson. and Jesse Ventura you add in a few entertainers and Bam you have a packed house calling for the Legalization starting in NV. and Alaska. Hightimes run a story on the Hashbash and how it has been a overwhelming success for 33 years. Air America could have a spot set aside for Cannabis news from all over the World on Testing, Medical use, Hemp products. Nader a good guest for this. AARP can run first hand reports on how Members have benefited from Cannabis and how billions have been squandered on the Drug War, Dr. Andrew Weil could have the respect, with helpers like Dr.Russo and Joycelyn Elders.

Hats off to Michelle Phillips, Jesse Ventura, Bill Maher and Jocelyn Elders. With any luck and a whisper of hope, more will jump onto the bandwagon.Maybe politicians will sit up and take notice. When they do, hats off to them, too.

She'll balance Bill Maher
Bill Maher tells jokes about what gold digging airheads women are. I never understood why until I saw the kind of women he dates. He's a lot like a women who only likes men who hit her and then runs around complaining that all men hit women. Hooray for these two women, now we'll have some gender credibility and more appeal to an important target market.

I agree! This would be a perfect year for famous people from the 60s and 70s to stand up for us. What would any of them lose by standing up for cannabis law reform? Nothing in my opinion. We need them!

Just a Note
I used the medical marijuana icon and I should have used the cannabis icon. MPP is so closely associated with MMJ that I made the mistake. It really isn't important but I wanted to mention it anyway. I hope that other entertainers respond and step out for us.

Or more CNews readers to support the MPP.
The MPP is one of the few organizations that get my regular support. If we can consolidate our efforts under 1 credible organization it will increase our influence and spead up the inevitablr changes we need.
