cannabisnews.com: Montel Williams Goes To Pot Montel Williams Goes To Pot Posted by CN Staff on January 06, 2004 at 06:29:08 PT Breaking News Source: Herald Sun On November 3, Montel Williams was briefly detained at Detroit Metro Airport, where baggage screeners found a glass pipe and residue of a marijuana by-product in his bags. That's when the talk show host, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, was outed as a user of the herb for medicinal purposes. In his first interview after the airport discovery, Williams makes no apologies. In fact, he devotes several chapters to the case for medical marijuana in his new autobiography, "Climbing Higher," in bookstores today. He clears the air to TV Guide Online. Q. What happened to you in Detroit? A. When my bags were going through a metal detector at the Detroit airport, the security people found my needles. I take injectable drugs every day. Then, one guy found a perfectly clean glass pipe that looks like an egg. He said, "What do you smoke in it?" I said, "None of your business." And it pissed him off. I also had a little bottle that had been in my bag for a month. It had less than a twentieth of a gram of kef residue. He called the police. They had to give me a paraphernalia violation. (Williams paid a $100 fine.) They said there was too little to bother testing. Q. Have you done a show on medical marijuana? A. I'm doing a show on Jan. 13 about the book and this issue. The model Emme, whose father died of MS complications, is going to interview me. I think it's time for a change. I hope to inspire others to take a stand. You cannot tell me that if one of George Bush's daughters came to him and said, "This is the only thing that will help my pain," he'd say, "No, baby, you have to suffer. I'll lay you down on a bed and hook you up to a morphine drip, and when you wake up in four or five days, we'll talk." Q. Why do you use it? A. It eases depression in some ways. It helps sleeping disorders and it eases nerve pain. Q. Why not use any of the legal painkillers? A. I attempted to use some. Oxycontin and Vicodin are extremely addictive. Percocet didn't work. Marijuana is the best tool for me. She was asked to do one for a mother of a young man that died of a heart attack, which was labeled as a drug use for speed. The mother said that she had to fight for her sons good name. Sure enough the pee test was normal and he did have a blockage of the heart which caused his death. How many of the current overdoses are ruled this way. Ohrah please do a show on the Med uses like Montel. And who is Emme. And when is the New High Times going to do a story on Montel.http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread18095.shtml Q. [ Post Comment ] Comment #20 posted by FoM on January 06, 2004 at 16:37:03 PT On Direct TV EJ it says that it will be about medical marijuana and the topic you said too. That's on the preview on our satellite. I think Whoopi's show is so funny. We saw the show when her mother comes to visit and she is nice and it's because of drugs she's taking. It was a funny show. [ Post Comment ] Comment #19 posted by E_Johnson on January 06, 2004 at 16:30:32 PT It wasn't in the preview clip The preview clip of tonight's episode showed Mavis helping her Iranian handyman study for his citizenship exam. She's trying to get him into a patriotic mood so she tells him, "America doesn't hate black people. America loves black people. They love us so much they sent ships over to Africa just to bring us here." This is what Yahoo! says: Mavis fields complaints about elderly guests (Eli Wallach, Rue McClanahan) who are smoking marijuana in their room; Nasim studies for his citizenship exam.Eli Wallach and Rue McClanahan!!!! Yeeeeaaaahhhhhh! Those two actors have a lot of bonafides in American culture.I mean, they've earned a lot of respect through their work. It's great to be represented on TV by two such amazing professionals. [ Post Comment ] Comment #16 posted by FoM on January 06, 2004 at 14:56:00 PT Nuevo Mexican I agree with you about the tv. I really like Whoopi's show. Whoopi and the 70s Show are about all I will watch. News isn't news on tv so I watch it for weather or earthquakes or things like that. That's about all though. [ Post Comment ] Comment #15 posted by Nuevo Mexican on January 06, 2004 at 14:27:41 PT Some people still do the fire thing! Third World? Fire is big in the Third World! And in the 'poverty' states too!No time to watch TV when you cold, hungry and jobless!Or if your sick of corporate exploitation of minorities, gratuitus sex, and the lie of self-regulating 'what's permissable for your children to see'.Most people in this town refuse to watch mainstream TV, and have sworn off of its mind-numbing qualities, and spend alot of time in sweats, kivas, and in general, stoking the fires that TV is intended to replace. It is almost impossible to watch TV and not get nauseated, if not by the show, (SNL for example, formerly great show gone bad, bad, bad!) then by the ads, and the bush-licking news media. I'm glad to see Cannabis activism having effects on the mainstream, especially in this context, Whoopi is a Scorpio, and lives up to her sign, don't ask me about Dennis Miller, he's a traitor to his sign, (Pat Buchanan too). They make their own films, movies, statements, shows, programs, etc.Make the programs people watch, it is 'pro-active'!Reading is huge these days! Converstion is KING, and coffee shops are packed with information swappers! And almost every house or business has a fireplace, woodstove or kiva! Try taking your eyes off of a beautiful fire, warm, aromatic, and hypnotic in a harmless way. The best commercial for relaxation, meditation, quiet, healing and insight! If don't believe me, then ask your pagan friends! If you want to experience a non-TV driven reality, get in your car and drive around Americas' rural places, outside the major cities, as not everyone gets their cues from advertisers. Its hard not to be influenced by the constant hum of consumerism! Thats why they call it 'programing'.And they know from the revenue that it 'works'.Yes many city dwellers do feel it neccesary to get their cues from the boob tube, but the numbers are dwindling, and you can contribute, just TURN OFF THE DAMN THING! It is designed as a babysitter, and time waster, spiked with usefull information at least once a month, to keep us glued, hoping for more 'truth', that rarely comes.Turn it off! We'll let you know if there's a debate, or bush is resigning. And if Whoopi does a good show, and if Jesse gets another show, doubtful, you will find out here! And it's great for our health, wealth and well-being! [ Post Comment ] Comment #14 posted by E_Johnson on January 06, 2004 at 14:14:03 PT Actually what I meant was There were a lot of violent things happening to the citizens of Galilee during the time of Christ. The Romans increased the taxes demanded from the province to pay for their own building programs. That decision was resisted actively by citizens of Galilee, and it was defended and enforced with the military power of Rome. The tax hike was too much for the middle class and drove many into sudden poverty. So the Romans created social and economic divisions in Galilee that were sudden and traumatic, that set the rich against the poor, but made everyone powerless to correct the situation.Cannabis in any form would have brought a great lot of relief to people suffering the diseases and maladies triggered by the trauma of Roman oppression. [ Post Comment ] Comment #13 posted by The GCW on January 06, 2004 at 13:09:06 PT E. Johnson & Shaman, Kaneh bosm is so real, I testify. We can do the works of Christ and more because not only was He like Us, but We are then like Him. Beyond that is the Spirit of Truth, which is SO REAL – I CAN NOT TESTIFY IT ENOUGH. We have this which is LITERALLY A COMMUNICATION SYSTEM WITH HIM. I can not tell You enough. When We believe in Christ God Our Father and obey Him, which amounts to loving Our brother & pray to Christ God Our Father with loving sincerity, He communicates with Us! It’s like all He wants is a little of Our time.Kaneh bosm is the king of plants, Biblically. It is for Us that believe and know the Truth… -see 1 Timothy 4:1-5.John 14:12; “Truly, truly, I say to You, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.” – Jesus Christ.Using cannabis certainly does not in itself mean We can not have the Spirit of Truth. And that needs to be said because regular church goers would like cannabis users to think cannabis doesn’t allow a relationship with Christ God Our Father and the spirit of truth. I think telling cannabis users they can not have Christ… is an error that has scattered some of Us away from Christ God Our Father along with the Spirit of Truth. Through My own experience it seems more likely, those with out using cannabis are the ones that can not have the Spirit of Truth.420And with mention of Shaman, I want to share this, inside the C.D. case of the Santana album titled: Shaman.“Shaman is a spiritual healer who brings balance to mind, body, heart and spirit with colors, sound, herbs and song, creating unity and harmony in the world.”One cut I like is #7 titled: “Victory is Won”, which somehow makes Me see this fight as won, but not over. We have won, and now We must disarm the cannabis prohibitionists. [ Post Comment ] Comment #12 posted by E_Johnson on January 06, 2004 at 11:28:43 PT MaxFlowers, think of the campfire and the shaman We are too big a tribe now to gather around a camp fire and hear the shaman spin the events and doings and legends of the tribe into a song or a story. So we have TV sitcoms instead. [ Post Comment ] Comment #11 posted by E_Johnson on January 06, 2004 at 11:21:42 PT Pain, memory and emotion Dr. Russo, that could be the title of a book about the history of human civilization. [ Post Comment ] Comment #10 posted by Max Flowers on January 06, 2004 at 11:10:08 PT TV Nation I am of course grateful for any and all positive exposure for cannabis, but I have to say I find it so weird that in this country we have to have important social issues "test-marketed" via sitcoms on TV before the masses can finally learn to deal with them. It's almost like reality can't have its turn until sitcoms process it first...?! [ Post Comment ] Comment #9 posted by Ethan Russo MD on January 06, 2004 at 11:02:28 PT Cannabis and Depression I have written quite a bit on this topic. See my chapter, "Cannabis, A Breed Apart" in Handbook of Psychotropic Herbs, Haworth Press, 2001.Additionally, I have two book chapters with Ester Fride and Lester Grinspoon dealing with this topic currently in press. Finally, an article on what I call clinical endocannabinoid deficiency will be published in Neuroendocrinology Letters in a couple of months.Depression is biochemically heterogeneous, and not everything works for a given person. Endogenous cannabinoids possess a neuromodulatory role on pain, memory and emotion, and will have a large role in treatment of their derangements in future years. [ Post Comment ] Comment #8 posted by FoM on January 06, 2004 at 10:46:57 PT EJ My 2 Cents I believe differently then many people. I wouldn't say if the theory is right or wrong because no one really knows. Sacramental use of incense was used in the Catholic Church and in the Old Testament. Incense was used for purification and I'll never forget the wonderful aroma when we had a High Mass. Since incense was important Cannabis could have been used. Herbs and oils were very important. This is just my opinion. I do know that God made this plant and the benefits are well know even by the prohibitionists anymore. [ Post Comment ] Comment #7 posted by E_Johnson on January 06, 2004 at 10:27:32 PT This will be where Jesus meets science I was skeptical about the whole caneh bosm idea but the more I think about it, the more I think Jesus was one of us. [ Post Comment ] Comment #6 posted by E_Johnson on January 06, 2004 at 10:23:56 PT Calling Dr. Russo Montel said: "A. It eases depression in some ways. It helps sleeping disorders and it eases nerve pain."I'll bet that upon testing, scientists will find that what marijuana eases is the TRAUMA of being sick. I don't think it's really depression per se, I think that discovering how frail the human body really is can be very traumatic, people can get PTSD from being diagnosed with a serious illness. And cannabinoids keep the daily trauma of knowing you have a fatal illness from dominating your waking consciousness.PTSD interrupts sleep, it causes sleep disorders. Cannabis eases sleep, so maybe the two are related. Maybe PTSD comes about from some kind of damage to the normal cannabinoid system. So many people say that cannabis keeps them from dwelling incessantly on the fact that they're sick. [ Post Comment ] Comment #5 posted by FoM on January 06, 2004 at 10:22:02 PT All I Can Say is Whoopi I really like Whoopi's show. I voted for it today as the best new comedy for the People's Choice Awards. Between Montel and Whoopi we are making progress! [ Post Comment ] Comment #4 posted by E_Johnson on January 06, 2004 at 10:15:46 PT Hooray we've got daytime and primetime! I am really grateful to Bill Maher and Woody Harrelson for everything they've done but I'm also happy that we're moving into new markets with new celebrity supporters. This is really great, to bring the issue out to mainstream America this way.
