Dover Township -- Cheryl Miller lost her battle with multiple sclerosis last Saturday, but her fight to legalize marijuana for medical purposes will be continued by her husband, Jim.Cheryl Miller, from the Silverton section, died June 7 at age 56. She had suffered from MS -- a debilitating disease that attacks the central nervous system -- for more than 32 years. She found that marijuana eased her pain, but often went without the substance because it is illegal in New Jersey and has not been approved for medical use, except in a handful of states and in Canada.
Jim Miller, a carpenter, has been on a 10-year crusade to bring about the legal use of medical marijuana in New Jersey, to provide some relief for his long-suffering wife and others in similar situations.He has written more than 100 letters to legislators, protested nine times near the White House, and once pushed his wife in a wheelchair from Seaside Heights to Trenton, drawing media attention to her plight."If she had been allowed to use marijuana, she definitely would have suffered less, and she may have lived longer," Miller said by telephone from Oklahoma, where he had returned this week with his wife's cremated remains to inter them in her native state.He said he would continue to campaign for the medical use of marijuana on the state and federal levels.The Millers, invoking a state law passed in 1981, pressed the state to ask Washington for permission to do medical marijuana studies involving doctors and their patients. The state Department of Health and Human Services, in a letter dated Nov. 5, 2002, denied the Millers' request, stating there are viable treatment alternatives to marijuana.Miller said he will try again, and has already sent a letter to state Sen. Andrew Ciesla, R-Ocean, asking him to renew the request to Washington.Ciesla could not be reached for comment yesterday.Miller also supports legislation now in the House of Representatives to allow states to decide for themselves on the legality of marijuana.Rep. Robert Andrews, D-N.J., whose constituency includes Burlington, Gloucester and Camden counties, changed his stance from opposing medical marijuana to supporting it after meeting Cheryl Miller about three years ago."After meeting Cheryl, I asked myself why should a government get between a patient and her doctor?" Andrews said. "I have faith in physicians. My own earthly father has been gone for many years, gone to live with my Heavenly Father. Thank you for reminding me that on Fathers' Day, I still have two fathers to celebrate, honor, and love. My earthly father was a man of strong convictions and love of history. He is remembered fondly in the community for all his service. In case you haven't seen it, here is the link to the 30 minute video that introduced me to this wonderful lady. There have only been 214 viewings of this video by the Pot-TV viewers. That shows why we have a problem in our fight. The video of a lady showing her boobs on Pot-TV gets thousands of hits but the video of a TRUE LADY who was trying to help us all despite being sick and in a wheelchair gets 214 hits. My prayers to Cheryl, Mrs. Miller..She has gone Home,Nicely said Dr. Russo...One of the best things we can say about someone who has left us is that they made a difference for others, and our society. Cheryl did that and more...We, the living "will carry the burden" we will bring this cause to light, we will emancipate ourselves, from the deprived tyranny that surrounds all creation.When government becomes a business it is certain of failure.
When governments deny the basic foundations of existance, the people become ill and wither..
It is this illness that nature will seek to heal, and in healing, will destroy the blind leaders that force mankind into hell..It always amazes me that doctors are willing to intercede against the US government, tarnish their proffesional standing, for the MMJ cause, yet the "Government" keeps insisting that marijuans (cannabis-hemp) has "NO" value..Have we educated a bunch of idiot doctors?
Can so many people be that stupid? To believe that such an educated person would even suggest that "marijuana" has healing properties.This raises the question, why does the government react so badly to "marijuana"?What is it that they are so frightened about?If 10% of the american population were addicted to marijuana, would the US end?
Would the economy just collapse?
Would God come to visit and damn the world?God, that most mysterious being, just never seems to come and say anything, at least in the last thousand years..
God just keeps the stars twinkling, and universe is just creating, more and more worlds..

An inspiration
I'm glad that Cheryl's passing finally received some news coverage. There should have been more for someone of her stature, considering how many lives she touched.I have been in close touch with Jim, and Cherylheart/IMMLY is planning a series of events to honor Cheryl and lobby for HR 2233, the States Rights to Medical Marijuana Act in Washington DC in late September, beginning with a memorial candlelight vigil for Cheryl.Everyone will have the opportunity to participate, even if you can't make it to D.C., by calling congress critters or visiting local offices.If Cheryl could accomplish so much while paralyzed from MS, how can anyone say they can't make a small effort? It's unfortunate that patients have to lobby because healthy people make excuses. MMJ has the support of 80% of the American people, but they have to let their lawmakers know.No other issue has this kind of support, but some in the movement say bills like HR 2233 don't have a chance of passage. We must banish defeatist attitudes like this. Cheryl showed us if we pull together, we can make change happen.We will have the chance to pull together this September. Stay tuned!Gary

We are all saddened by Cheryl's passing. She was a brave lady, and I was honored to have met her.One of the best things we can say about someone who has left us is that they made a difference for others, and our society. Cheryl did that and more.Jim is left with a huge hole in his heart, but hopefully wonderful memories, and pride in his dedication and determination. It is easy for me to see people like Cheryl in my practice, in that I can walk away from it all when office hours are over. Patients and their families live with the burden of disease every day. We must do everything we can to ease their plight. Cannabis medicines are a big part of that answer.
