Press Release

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) is launching a new multi-media advertising campaign to better inform teenagers about the dangers of marijuana use, according to an October 7 press release from the ONDCP.Polling data show that teens lack knowledge about marijuana and its effects, and the ads are designed to fill that knowledge gap, the release said.
"Teens want to be armed with real knowledge about the potential consequences of using marijuana so they have a reason to turn it down," said ONDCP Director John Walters. "We know marijuana puts more teens into drug treatment each year than all other illegal drugs combined and now outpaces even alcohol admissions."The ads will be presented on television, radio, in youth magazines and on the Internet.Following is the text of the ONDCP news release:(begin text)OFFICE OF NATIONAL DRUG CONTROL POLICY News and Public Affairs - October 7, 2002 White House Drug Czar and Partnership for a Drug-Free America Release New Hard-Hitting Ads Highlighting the Dangers of Marijuana UseDrug Czar John Walters says ads offer "tangible, real world examples of what can go wrong when teens use marijuana."Washington, D.C.-The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Partnership for a Drug-Free America today released a new series of ads focusing on the dangers of marijuana use. The ads are a response to research showing that American youth want to be provided with the facts about marijuana. The bold new ads, which start today in heavy rotation across the country, speak in a vernacular that teens understand and will find hard to dismiss."We know that, unfortunately, today's teens are buying myths about marijuana because the facts about this dangerous drug are being drowned out by a chorus of falsehoods," said John Walters, Director of National Drug Control Policy. "Teens want to be armed with real knowledge about the potential consequences of using marijuana so they have a reason to turn it down. We know marijuana puts more teens into drug treatment each year than all other illegal drugs combined and now outpaces even alcohol admissions. These extensively tested ads offer teens tangible, real-world examples of what can go wrong when they use marijuana.""Outstanding qualitative and quantitative test results tell us that this campaign, created by ad agency Leo Burnett, is going to resonate powerfully with teenagers," said Stephen J. Pasierb, President and CEO of the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. "The messages are jarring and credible, and will challenge kids to think about major mistakes they could make if high on marijuana. We applaud Director Walters and the ONDCP for focusing on marijuana, which is anything but harmless. Working together, we will change teen attitudes about marijuana and drive down use."The contents of the ads are a direct result of research conducted with teens of various ages and ethnic backgrounds across America. This research indicated that there is much ambiguity surrounding marijuana and its effects, and teens openly admitted a lack of knowledge about the drug. In focus groups, teens identified two major reasons to avoid marijuana: it can lead to stupid, sometimes tragic mistakes (such as driving with someone who is high, or having unplanned, unprotected sex), and it can get you into trouble with the law. These disincentives were incorporated into the four ads titled, "Drive-Thru," "Den," "Couple," and "Concert." Starting today, the ads will be presented through a range of mediums-television, radio, youth magazines, online banners, and in theaters, arcades, and schools.(end text)Messages aim to dispel myths about marijuana (570)Complete Title: Text: New Anti-Marijuana Campaign Launched by Drug Czar The ads can be viewed at: http://www.mediacampaign.orgDistributed by the Office of International Information Programs, U.S. Department of State. Rescheduling: Round Three
Here is the latest information on the petition that was filed today by he Coalition for Rescheduling Cannabis. From: Jon Gettman
Subject: Rescheduling Press ReleasePRESS RELEASE FROM
THE COALITION FOR RESCHEDULING CANNABISFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE See List Below
Wednesday, October 9, 2002 for Coalition Members
and Contact InformationNATIONAL COALITION SEEKS RECOGNITION OF
THE ACCEPTED MEDICAL USE OF CANNABIS IN THE UNITED STATES;
Petition Provides Scientific Argument For ReschedulingA coalition of organizations advocating medical access to cannabis filed a comprehensive rescheduling petition with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on October 9, 2002.The DEA currently classifies marijuana as a schedule I substance, which prohibits medical access to cannabis and places both costly and severe restrictions on further medical research. The Coalition for Rescheduling Cannabis has provided detailed evidence challenging DEA's determination that cannabis has no accepted medical use in the United States. This petition seeks to have marijuana removed from schedule I and place in a less restrictive schedule that provides for medical use based on a doctor's prescription. If successful, this petition would also eliminate the clash between federal law and the laws of states that accept and recognize the medical use of cannabis.According to the petition: "Key developments in the assessment of marijuana's medical use include: acceptance of marijuana's medical use by health care professionals; recognition of marijuana as a medicine of last resort by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences; recognition of the therapeutic properties of cannabinoids by the scientific community and health care providers; the emergence of basic research explaining the mode of action of cannabis-based medicines; the emergence of clinical research on the medical use of cannabis; and acceptance of marijuana's medical use by eight states. These developments contradict the [current] classification of marijuana as having no accepted medical use in the United States."A prior attempt to force marijuana's rescheduling by Jon Gettman and High Times was rejected by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Court of Appeals decided that petitioners were not sufficiently injured to have standing to challenge DEA's determinations in federal court. The Coalition's petition argues that "in their review of the Gettman petition neither DEA nor HHS gave any consideration to marijuana's medical use, its safety for use, its relative abuse potential or its relative dependence liability, as called for by the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). This petition addresses all of these relevant issues.""This petition is being filed by a coalition of interested parties including non-profit organizations and individual citizens. The membership of these organizations and these individual citizens have various interests in the appropriate scheduling of cannabis under federal law, including but not limited to an interest in legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use based on existing medical conditions."The Coalition for Rescheduling Cannabis is comprised of the American Alliance for Medical Cannabis, Americans for Safe Access, California NORML, the Drug Policy Forum of Texas, Jon Gettman, High Times, Iowans for Medical Marijuana, the Los Angeles Cannabis Resource Center, the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws, the Oakland Cannabis Buyers Cooperative, Patients Out of Time and other interested individuals. The full text of the petition in on-line at http:// www.drugscience.org. I don't trust those govt.sites.
or quasi-govt. sites as the case may be.I went there to view those ads and my system started "swapping" like crazy and resources dropped 15%,tho nothing showed on "Zonealarm" .I think that even if the govt.doesn't put any "funny-business" spyware up sometimes hackers plant stuff assuming site viewers would be favorable to the site..I 'm just saying "be cautious".

Walters- the committed crusader
Yep, that Walters does not believe in taking drugs. He really should be taking lithium, don't you think? He needs to be a committed crusader. Committed to a mental hospital, prison, or a gallows. The four ads they are talking about can all be accessed from this page: http://www.mediacampaign.org/mg/television.html. When they play, Ogilvy & Mathis get there names atop of the media player. Yes, cheat the government out of millions and get another big contract, O&M, promote their great firm on top of some stupid taxpayer ads designed to bribe the media into continuing the insanity of the WOSD.All the ads end with "Harmless?" remaining on the screen as they close. They all lead to a phrase before the "Harmless?" Drive Thru displays "Marijuana can slow your reaction time" after someone at a drive through screeches out because he has no money and has a small kid on a bicycle in front of him. Den displays "Marijuana can distort your sense of reality" after two boys are high in the den when one guy finds a gun in the desk drawer and pulls the trigger after saying no to "Is it loaded." Couple displays "Marijuana can impair your judgement" as it leads up to a teenage boy trying to unbutton a girl's blouse on a couch at a party while smoking the demon weed. Concert displays "Marijuana can get you busted" after a plainclothes policeman bust some kid in a bathroom stall while he is smoking pot at a concert. They are another waste of money. DAD-D,1,2

Lies and Fear Tactics
If the czar and and his soldiers can't scare you with tales of the EVIL KILLER WEED MARIJUANA. Maybe threats of ruining your life with an arrest record will make you conform to the will of the czar. The czar and his cronies know nothing of compassion, all they know is fearmongering, hate, stereotyping, lies, disinformation, punishiment, war, threats, greed, lust, power, pain, control, too name a few. They are the New High Priests of the New Inquistion. They have no intention of "helping" anyone. They expect EVERYONE to bow to their authority. These unacountable "authorities" have no place in a "true" democracy except as an example of what should not be.Fear Not....Nothing to fear but fear itself....No FearWhen the People lead the leaders will followPOWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!!

Clayton, we hardly knew ye
--Drug Czar John Walters says ads offer "tangible, real world examples of what can go wrong when teens use marijuana."-- You mean like the accidental shooting of Clayton Helriggle, who had in his possession enough cannabis to justify a $100 fine, but was raided by gung-ho narco-gestapo agents who did NOT identify themselves before they shot and fatally wounded him? "This is Clayton. This is Clayton's dime bag. This is the legally-owned 9mm Clayton may or may not have been carrying. This is the SWAT team that stormed the house Clayton was in, looking for Clayton's dime bag. This is the bullet that ended Clayton's life." How do I tell the federal government that I want my money back? And now for something completely different:

News Brief from The Associated Press
Drug Czar Speaks Out Against Medical Marijuana InitiativeOctober 9, 2002Associated PressThe nation's drug czar, John Walters, says he's confident Arizona voters will not be conned into passing Proposition 203, the medical marijuana initiative on the November ballot.Walters, making an appearance in Phoenix Wednesday, said this morning that the marijuana now available is much more potent than the pot used in the '60s and '70s. And he says more kids are seeking help for marijuana use than for alcohol. In Arizona, he says, some 30,000 kids a year start using marijuana.Walters says "no state, no community is going to be better off with more drugs." And he says he thinks the people of Arizona will recognize it.

Treatment
"Teens want to be armed with real knowledge about the potential consequences of using marijuana so they have a reason to turn it down," said ONDCP Director John Walters. "We know marijuana puts more teens into drug treatment each year than all other illegal drugs combined and now outpaces even alcohol admissions."The only reason the teens are in drug treatment for marijuana is because they are court ordered to be there, not because they wanted to be.

As the kids sit back...and yawn
Kids today are a good deal more aware of attempts to manipulate them. They'll take one look at this stuff, see it for what it is, and immediately put it in the mental trash can.And laugh at all the high toned moralizing accompanying it.You want to reach kids? TELL 'EM THE TRUTH!

Well,
they are presenting the fact that the WOD is a hazard to kids. I wonder if they'll show a teenager being shot by a SWAT team?
