Los Angeles-based Alterna Applied Research Laboratories, a maker of hemp shampoo and other hair-care products, said it has revived the outdoor advertising campaign pulled from 106 city bus benches last year, which featured a cannabis leaf and the message that its products were THC or drug free.
The ads began reappearing last month on the side of 75 Metropolitan Transportation Authority buses and will run through June. Alterna's ad agency, Coast United Advertising of Canoga Park, pulled the ads last November from 106 Los Angeles bus benches under pressure from Drug Abuse Resistance Education or DARE, a program aimed at preventing drug abuse in schoolchildren. DARE objected to public property being used to promote what they call an "illegal substance." However, another outdoor advertising company, TDI, was willing to place the controversial ads on buses. DARE officials declined to comment on the new bus campaign. Hemp is a variety of the plant Cannabis sativa, but one that contains much lower levels of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, marijuana's mind-altering ingredient.
