Press Release
Source: PRNewswire

The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has teamed up with Safeway, the country's third-largest grocery store chain, to deliver youth drug prevention information to millions of parents. In a broad partnership with ONDCP's National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, Safeway has launched an anti-drug advertising and communications campaign for parents in its U.S. stores. The partnership is part of a larger effort launched by the Media Campaign last fall to enlist corporate America in youth drug prevention.
In addition to raising awareness of the important role of parents in keeping kids drug-free, the Safeway campaign is designed to provide practical information and drug prevention tips for parents. National research shows that parents are the single biggest influence on their children when it comes to drugs. According to one study, two-thirds of youth ages 13-17 say losing their parents' respect and pride is one of the main reasons they don't smoke marijuana or use other drugs."Participation by corporate America is adding an important new dimension to our efforts to reach more parents more often and in more places with powerful advice on preventing youth drug use," said ONDCP Director John Walters. "By reaching out to their customers, employees and communities, Safeway is setting a great example that we hope many other businesses will follow."As part of the campaign, which will extend through fall 2002, Safeway customers will see the Media Campaign's parenting messages in a number of unexpected places. Parenting advice is featured on Safeway milk cartons and paper bags and in weekly advertising circulars. Some Safeway stores are also broadcasting public service announcements on in-store radio networks."Corporate America has an important role in helping extend the message to parents that they are a critical factor in drug prevention," said Safeway Vice President of Public Affairs Brian Dowling. "Safeway is proud to be one of the first companies in America to adopt the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign to help kids reject illicit drugs."Safeway has also placed billboard-sized advertisements on two tractor-trailer trucks that travel on the east coast and in northern California. The trucks feature a mother, daughter and the drug prevention message: "Want to keep your child drug-free? ASK: Who? What? When? Where? Questions. The Anti-Drug." Safeway has also incorporated parenting tips and information into its employee communications, including its employee video network and internal newsletter, which reaches 193,000 employees nationwide.Safeway Inc. is a Fortune 50 company, and one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America based on sales. The company operates 1,782 stores in the United States and Canada and had annual sales of $34.3 billion in 2001. The company employs nearly 200,000 people. In addition to the Safeway name, the company also operates stores under the Dominicks, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Vons, Carrs and Genuardis' banners. In 1998, with the bipartisan support of Congress and the President, ONDCP created the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, an effort designed to educate and empower youth to reject illicit drugs. Counting on an unprecedented blend of public and private partnerships, non-profit community service organizations, volunteerism, and youth-to-youth communications, the Campaign is designed to reach Americans of diverse backgrounds wherever they live, learn, work, play and practice their faith.Complete Title: Drug Czar & Safeway Team Up to Help Parents Raise Drug-Free Kids; Part of New Effort to Enlist Corporate America in Youth Drug Prevention Source: Office of National Drug Control PolicyContact: Jennifer de Vallance of ONDCP, +1-202-395-6618, or Erika Batcheller, +1-202-828-8821, for ONDCPSource: PRNewswire Published: Friday, May 31, 2002Copyright 2002, PRNewswire Website: http://www.prnewswire.com Contact: http://www.prnewswire.com/news/Safeway -- http://www.safeway.com/Contact: http://www.safeway.com/contact_us_01.aspRelated Articles & Web Site:Crossfire: Do Drug Ads Work?http://freedomtoexhale.com/cf.htmDowner Story for the Media -- Don't Do Drug Adshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread12909.shtmlKids, Drugs and Bureaucrats http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread12901.shtmlDrug Czar Walters' Assertion of Ads' Flop Absurd http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread12851.shtml

Send his own words back to him....
"There can be no neutrality between justice and cruelty, between the innocent and the guilty. We are in a conflict between good and evil, and America will call evil by its name,"Mr. President, Apply your own words, "There can be no neutrality between justice and cruelty, between the innocent and the guilty. We are in a conflict between good and evil, and America will call evil by its name," to what you are sending your DEA henchmen to do against the sick needing marijuana in California. The actions of the government in those cases is unjust, cruel, and purely evil. Only the deeply deluded mind can see medical marijuana users, or marijuana users in general, for that matter, as "guilty" of anything deserving punishment or persecution.Sincerely,
Hope in America

Flea Markets
I agree lehder.... We now buy much of our food and other supermarket items either at local flea markets (here they are called "swap meets") or liquidation-type stores where they get rid of inventory that has been rotated out at the supermarkets, usually at 1/2-2/3 the original price. Sure, sometimes you have to check and make sure the items are not (too far) expired, but it is funneling some money away from the greedy corporations and the fruits/vegs at the flea markets are better quality and cheaper than the big stores anyway!A win-win all around, methinks...

things one can do to help
stop this insanity...Simple instructions..Gather four-five carts, pile all kinds of products...
Go to checkout and have the poor checker totaled all the products. "Sorry, please get your boss down here."The harried nerd-looking manager shows up," What is the problem?""Is that true?", showing this article to the manager."Sorry, sir/madame, I cannot buy your products anymore."ff

........Just Wait.........
...This kind of corporate support will become quite common.Safeway is just the beginning.....Walters ,and the ondcp are going to be recruiting alot more corporate supporters for the drug war....These corporations can,and will be coerced into showcasing the ondcps propaganda...After all,,most large corporations have a special symbiotic relationship with the empire..If a corporation does not want to come on board with the federal overlords,,it just might not land a government contract,,or it may be investigated,,,,and because of its reluctance to support the drug war,,then the corporation may be investigated under the usa/patriot act,,for suspected narco-terrorist activity,,,and then, they will sieze all their assets,,(which, believe it or not,,they can do under the usa/patriot act.).................
.......Nope............things dont look at all pretty ..in fact,,things look quite fucked when you consider some of these choice selections from our court appointed pResident, taken from speeches in the last few days.:
"Our security will require all Americans to be
forward-looking and resolute, to be ready for
preemptive action, when necessary, to defend our
liberty and to defend our lives,"
Deterrence "means nothing against shadowy terrorist
networks with no nation or citizens to defend,"
while containment "is not possible when unbalanced
dictators with weapons of mass destruction can
deliver those weapons on missiles or secretly
provide them to terrorist allies," he said. "The war on terror will not be won on the
defensive. We must take the battle to the enemy,
disrupt its plans, and confront the worst threats
       before they emerge," he said.
"By confronting evil and lawless
regimes, we do not create a problem, we reveal a
problem. And we will lead the world in opposing
it." "There can be no neutrality between justice and
cruelty, between the innocent and the guilty. We
are in a conflict between good and evil, and
America will call evil by its name,"
Americans have always believed in an ethic of service. Americans
serve others because their conscience demands it, because their
faith teaches it, because they are grateful to their country, and
because service brings rewards much deeper than material success.
Government does not create this idealism, but we can do a better
job of supporting and encouraging an ethic of service in America.During my State of the Union address last January, I asked all
Americans to give at least two years, or 4,000 hours over their
lives, to serving others. And I created the USA Freedom Corps to
help Americans find volunteer opportunities. Whatever your talent,
whatever your background, each of you can do something.
"The war on terror will not be won on the
defensive. We must take the battle to the enemy,
disrupt its plans, and confront the worst threats
before they emerge," he said. Bush also defended his designation of Iran, Iraq
and North Korea as the "axis of evil," vowing to
continue to "call evil by its name" because a key
weapon in the campaign against terrorism is "firm
moral purpose." "Some worry that it is somehow undiplomatic or
       impolite to speak the language of right and wrong;
       I disagree," the president said.
................Now if some of that dont sound rather FREEKY!!,,,I'll eat a pice of catshit!.......when ya hear the prez saying this kinda shit,,then it just dont look too good,,unless ,,,people start to WAKE UP to what an idiot this guy is,, and realize that the empire has taken Constitutional America on a hellbound Train!..........
......the whole World ,,,,,is becoming remarkably violent.......Once the empire started bombin' the shit out of the evuldoers,,,,,,,then Isreal slaughtered untold thousands,,,and Colombia is heating up,,and the Pak/India thing is beyond simmering....you just know that the odds are, that this stuff wont be ending peacefully...After all,,once the US empire shitheads started the war on terror,,and they didnt say anything about Isreal,,they will probably "allow" a nuclear incident to occur,,,,and the shrub is poised to decimate Iraq.....There was a special "news" story on ABC tonight,,it was about how Iraq was almost done with a bunch of new pumps and oilfeilds,,they showed a bunch of pictures of Arab guys turning on big valves,,and the "reporter",was saying that Iraq was opening all these new well, even though they are forbidden from selling oil on the world market,,,I saw it as a propaganda pre-cursor to the empires Iraq thing....?......

Stop feeding the addicted
If Safeway really wants to improve the health of our nation they should stop selling food to anyone who is grossly obese.

Beyond any sense of conventional reason
The ONDCP and their Drug Warrior cronies must have the lowest I.Q. of any people anywhere.Right after they hear that their TV and radio ads are absolutely ineffective, they try what? Advertising in stores! How do they think that advertising in a store will make any difference? The people going to the store are for the most part the same ones served up ONDCP/PDFA tripe nightly on TV, and who have already been part of the study that's proven that it doesn't work!Parents are old enough to know how to deal with their kids' drug use! Ad campaigns at gov't expense aren't going to tell them any more than what they've heard already. And since many if not most have tried the "drug" most often mentioned in the ads and not had their livers explode, their lungs clog with tar, their embryos mutate or their brain fry like the proverbial egg, how much will they believe these idiotic ads?Furthermore... Anti-"Drug" ads in a store chain that sells ALCOHOL, CIGARETTES, OTC/PRESCRIPTION DRUGS, etc!! The word "hypocrisy" falls flat trying to describe this!I'm glad to see the Libs making headway in some areas. If not win, at least they can topple $$-wasting, drivel-spewing, brain-fried droids like Robert Barr. (Hey, come to think of it, these excuses for "people" prove that your brain can fry to a golden crisp without drugs -- illegal ones, anyway!!)We don't have Safeway stores in Southern California anymore, but you can be sure that if any chains here start to champion the ONDCP party line, they will hear from me!

Boycott Safeway
"By reaching out to their customers,
employees and communities, Safeway is setting a great example that we hope many other
businesses will follow."Safeway has made a big mistake, and one that will not be forgiven when loss of market share forces them to abandon its cowering to ONDCP. We have a lot of economic power. Other businesses will follow Safeway into bankruptcy.

This makes me very angry...
That's where we shop!!! Actually, that's where we used to shop before today. We must spend several hundred dollars per month there. (USED to spend....)If you are a Safeway customer, please visit the contact link provided near the bottom of the article. Let them know you will not help Safeway support the evil War on Some Drugs perpetuated by the self-serving Nazi-esque ONDCP. Here's what I told them:Hello,We have been Safeway customers for the last 7 years, since our family moved to *******. PR Newswire recently released a news statement containing (in part) the following information: "The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has teamed up with Safeway..."The US Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) is in large part responsible for perpetuation of the dangerous and counter-productive policy known as the "War on Drugs". This policy denies scientific fact; artificially elevates the illegal profits to drug dealers; perpetuates violent crime and theft; corrupts our police and government; and sustains the huge damage prohibited drugs cause to our children, our families and our communities. Our family takes Safeway's partnering with the ONDCP as a direct attack on the health of our family, the health of our community, the health of the world, and our liberties as enshrined in the US Constitution. Whatever good might come out of Safeway's partnering with ONDCP is vastly overshadowed by the continuing damage caused by the policies of that corrupt and self-serving organization. Our family requests that you reconsider your support of the ONDCP organization and it's policies. Until Safeway discontinues it's "partnering" with the ONDCP we will shop elsewhere, even if this means a significant increase in the price of the groceries we purchase.Sincerely,The ****** Family
