Two students have been suspended from Juneau-Douglas High School after being in a group that unfurled a banner reading "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" as the Olympic torch passed the school last week. One of the suspended students says his free speech rights were violated when school administrators confiscated the banner and disciplined him. School officials say the banner was displayed during a school activity, thus falling under school control.
Last Thursday, as the torch passed the high school on Glacier Avenue, senior Joseph Frederick and a group of about 20 other students and nonstudents standing across the street from JDHS unfurled a 15-by-3-foot white paper banner with their message emblazoned in duct tape.High school officials took the banner down and took disciplinary action against some members of the group. Frederick said he and one other student in the group received suspensions; Frederick's was for 10 days.Frederick said the group displayed the banner - whose content was gleaned from stickers seen on cars and snowboards - to see how people would react and as a test of their First Amendment rights."Some people laughed, some people cheered," he said. "Nobody really seemed bothered by it."Frederick said the group specifically went off school grounds to display the banner. In addition, Frederick said that given the composition of the group and the fact that he had not been in school that morning due to car trouble in the snow, he did not consider the group to be part of a school activity."We went across the street, standing with adults and people who don't go to high school," he said.JDHS Principal Deb Morse said even though the banner was displayed off school grounds, it was removed and the students disciplined because watching the torch relay "was a school activity. It was sanctioned by the school that students could be out (to watch the torch pass)."Morse said students let out of class lined both sides of Glacier Avenue, and school policy states that discipline enforcement extends to "any school sponsored/sanctioned activity." She also said the disciplinary action taken in this case addressed "more than just the banner."Frederick said he is unsure about whether he is going to appeal the suspension, but he feels his rights were violated."There's no reason that because someone is still in high school that they shouldn't have First Amendment rights," he said.Morse said the school was within its rights to take action against displaying the banner."At school it's a bit different," she said. "There are things that are appropriate and inappropriate, and that was inappropriate."Note: 'Bong Hits 4 Jesus' sign at Olympic Torch Relay leads to two JDHS students being suspended. Courthouse, Library, senior centers and hospitals. Clothing stores, booze shops, drug stores barber shops. Super Bowl subvertizing, Sporting games, Olympics and in NY with the others. Community TV and pirate radio...call in talk shows...WoD SUPPORTS TERRORIST!Slutia, their yahoo site looks like its advertizing for that demo at the Mardi Gras. Central and Western African natives were farming and harvesting cannabis sativa in North America as slaves. If they did smoke on the plantations, that would be kept secret. By the time of the Louisiana purchase in 1803, New Orleans had a mixed Spanish, French, Creole, Cajun, Mexican and Black population. The city teemed with adventurers and sailors, wise to the ways of cannabis. It was mixed with tobacco or smoked alone, used to season food, to treat insomnia and impotence, and so on.Prejedice Marujuana and the Jim Crow Laws

"Trained not to question" is a lie
I was in the Army for four years--plenty long enough to have learned that in any armed service you are not required to obey an unlawful order. The order to shoot down that plane was unlawful (there was no evidence that the plane was carrying illegal drugs, and by law it is illegal to shoot down a commercial aircraft, though it is okay to force the aircraft to land). Furthermore, the order to give the order to shoot down is also unlawful, and the fact that they are once again going to start shooting down civilian planes under suspicion of carrying drugs is also unlawful.I don't know what kind of crap they've been feeding Mr. Bowers, but he's either an idiot or a Nazi if he thinks his wife and daughter died simply because the fighter pilots were following orders. Remember Nuremburg? We didn't let the Nazis get away with using that excuse for murder then, and we should not let those responsible off the hook now. For every person involved in that shooting (and there were a lot--every member of Congress who voted in favor of this strategy, every member of the Clinton administration, every member of the Bush administration, every knowledgeable member of the CIA and America's armed forces, and every knowledgeable person in the Peruvian Air Force), one "drug offender" should be released from prison. Then, all of those spaces left empty should be filled by those responsible for shooting this plane down and killing two of its passengers. Those who are starting the shooting all over again should reserve their spaces now. Maybe we can start a program where they can designate a "drug offender" to replace. In short, where the blame is spread far and wide, the guilt and punishment should likewise extend.Dan B

Bong Hits For Jesus!
I am not sure if these guys got the slogan from our annual Mardi Gras counter protest (where we taunt the hundreds of self righteous fundamentalist bigots are bused in from the bible belt to try to bust up the party. They are given bullhorns with which they shout at people, telling them they are going to hell for wearing beads and other crazy slogans, and hateful signs stating that God hates fags and un-submissive wives.). Last year there were hundreds of pictures taken of our protest, and the Yahoo! club has been around for about a year. I don't know if these guys borrowed the slogan, or came up with it independantly, but all I can say is Right On! If anyone would lika a BHFJ! T-shirt (perfect for getting sent home from school!), you can get them http://www.cafepress.com/cp/store/store.aspx?storeid=bonghitjesus
These T-shirts are sold at cost. Spread the word!
Peace,
Brian (That is me in the photo with the T-shirts BTW)

Author: Clint CooperMISSIONARY SHOT DOWN IN PERU SAYS THE PILOTS 'JUST DOING THEIR JOB' The American missionary whose wife and daughter were killed in late April when a Peruvian air force fighter mistakenly opened fire on their plane is concerned about the fighter pilots who shot them. "There is nothing for me to forgive," said Jim Bowers, who survived the incident along with his son and the plane's pilot. "They were just doing their job. They had no right to deny their orders." Now a missionary for the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism in Raleigh, N.C., Mr. Bowers will be sharing his story Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. during the 53rd annual Missionary Conference at Highland Park Baptist Church. He will speak to students at Tennessee Temple University on Thursday. However, he said he would be "fighting God's will" to try to assess blame. "Lots of people are surprised," he said, "thinking that the pilots who pulled the trigger committed a crime, because they assume that's what happened. Like Russians, they're trained not to question for a second what they're told to do. I feel terrible for ( the pilots ), though, because apparently they're going to be put in jail." "There is no doubt in anyone's mind that it was gross negligence," he said. "Since the first days, though, we have had peace in our hearts. No one hated Roni ( his wife ) or Charity ( his daughter ). It was a complete accident." Scott McCurdy, associate pastor at Highland Park Baptist, said the conference can both uplift Mr. Bowers and be uplifting to those who hear him. "We want to be an encouragement to him, to let him know there is a vast family of God out there that loves him, that he is doing God's work," Mr. McCurdy said. "He can share how God has been sufficient, and that what Satan meant for evil, God can use for good. God does that in all of our lives. His is a highlighted incident." E.C. Haskell, executive administrator of mission relations for the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism, said Mr. Bowers has been an inspiration. Mr. Haskell said the incident, instead of dampening interest in missionary work, has fueled an interest in the field, especially in Peru. "Of the people in our candidates class," he said, "three people were there just as a result of what happened." Mr. Bowers, who started a Bible training center and was in the process of trying to organize Baptist churches in Peru before the incident last April, is now trying to begin a church for Hispanics in Raleigh. He and his 7-year-old son live with his widowed mother there. He also plans to make trips to Peru to assist his successors, check on the progress of his earlier work and help get a new sports complex built in Iquitos, Peru. The city where he and his family were headquartered, located in the midst of jungle territory, has no road access, he said. The sports complex, he said, was a dream of his wife's and was one of the last things she was involved in before she was killed. When built, he said, the center will provide a place for 100,000 young people to play and hear Christian outreach. It also will be a meeting place for churches, he said. To build the complex, which will be erected as a memorial to his wife and daughter, Mr. Bowers hopes to raise $250,000 within the next month. Money already sent as memorials for his wife and daughter has been designated for the center, he said. Anyone wishing to contribute may visit www.abwe.org. "If God Should Choose," a book about the Bowers family written by an association staff member, will be published by Moody Press in March. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These guys are great. I think I will send this to my bishop and priest. They have been ignoring my plea for them to say something about the injustice going on in the war on some drugs.
They even have T-shirts, caps and mugs

Oh man oh man... what a club!If we Boomers had the brass to think up Bong Hits For Jesus, we might have been able to legalize marijuana, I dunno. But maybe this is the kind of thing that really needed the Internet generation to spread. It's always fun to be amazed!Oh I guess a new generation is in town, look out!!!!!!The DARE kids are kickin butt.

Jeb Bush, take note:
I wrote to the Governor of my state, knowing full well he probably will never read my email. But what I tried to get across to Jeb Bush was that marijuana is far safer than Xanax, and if Noelle had safe legal access to marijuana, she would not have to break the law just to feel good.Schedule IV

I hope they charge the principle with theft
If the two were not in school, and not on school grounds, there is grounds for a theft charge, as well as the freedom of speech issue.I think this story is great, and hope the two quit school and continue a real education. The loss of three thousand dollars a year per student may change the school administrations position. Also, there is the fact that over twenty people were inthe group, and only two got dis-charged.I think more activists should be pushing the religious use angle. They did great.Rev Happy

Let's go on Crossing Over and consult Jefferson
"There's no reason that because someone is still in high school that they shouldn't have First Amendment rights," he said.Morse said the school was within its rights to take action against displaying the banner."At school it's a bit different," she said. "There are things that are appropriate and inappropriate, and that was inappropriate."What's that TV show where the host rings up dead people to console and counsel the living?Heck, let's ask the blokes who wrote the bloody Constitution what they had in mind here.Speaking of blood -- weren't most of the people who gave their lives for American freedom about high school age back then?
