Two state legislators have unveiled a bill that would allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes. Reps. Mark Pocan, D-Madison, and Frank Boyle, D-Superior, are basing their legislation on Hawaii's medical marijuana law, which allows patients to grow possess and use the drug if authorized by their doctors.Eight states have currently passed medical marijuana laws due to the drugs wide range of therapeutic applications, the legislators noted during a morning press conference Tuesday at the State Capitol.
Support for the measure also came from Tiffany Richards, R.N., of the Wisconsin Nurses Association."Cannabis can be used as an option by patients resistant to other treatments." she said. Therapeutic benefits include reduced nausea from chemotherapy and stimulation of appetite for those suffering from AIDS wasting syndrome, Richards added.Frequent critcisms have included arguments that marijuana is addictive and a gateway drug that leads to others. Richards said those statements are not true."Patients need a legal, unadulterated supply," she said.Additional support for the measure came from Ed Thompson, a candidate for governor."Politicians should not interfere with the choices made by people who are sick and suffering and their health care providers," Thompson said in a written statement.Similar bills have been inntroduced in the past legislative sesssions without success.Pocan is hopeful that national polls showing increased support for medical use of marijuana may influence some legislators. He said the new legislation would provide for a nonprofit corporation to distribute marijuana, with very specific controls.Newshawk: IMMLY -- http://www.immly.orgSource: Capital Times, The (WI) Author: Anita Weier, The Capital TimesPublished: December 12, 2001Copyright: 2001 The Capital Times Contact: tctvoice madison.comWebsite: http://www.thecapitaltimes.com/ Related Articles & Web Sites:Drug Policy Forum of Wisconsinhttp://drugsense.org/dpfwiMedical Marijuana Information Linkshttp://freedomtoexhale.com/medical.htmState Lawmakers Introduce Medical Marijuana Billhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread11546.shtmlBill Would Allow Medical Marijuanahttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread11544.shtml

Gary and Everyone
I just wanted to say that we know that the laws don't work and the only solution lies right out of their thoughts because of fear. Fear of what or whom I don't know anymore but I can only guess. This is positive news. It shows that after all the nasty raids in California someone is standing up once again and saying enough and that is what makes me happy today.

Hawaii Model
I hear ya drfist, but as this is the bill the legislators decided to introduce, WI patients have little choice but to hope that it gets to a hearing and give the legislature enough input to get it amended into the best legislation possible under the circumstances. The main thing is getting the patients off the battlefield. While we'd all love to have a perfect bill, political realities mean that is not always possible.Just my two cents,Gary

Hawaii Law is very bad example
this would be major mistake, the Hawaii law is to placate, it is so restrictive that very few dare sign up, the information and list gor right to the police narcotics div. no federal raids necessary. the cops will provide all the medical records and lists and locations of plants to the DEA, as they work together. plus the amount allowed is not even close to practical. Why not use the Netherlands law and provide it to any other with a perscription payed for by the govt.
I often wonder why the Dutch can handle this and we can't ,why do they deserve freedom and we have to be treated like childern?
