Broward Sheriff's Office deputies arrested fugitive Darrell Wayne Condit, the younger brother of U. S. Rep. Gary Condit, early Saturday in Dania Beach on a probation violation.BSO deputies escorted a handcuffed Condit from the sheriff's office headquarters to the Broward County Jail at 9 a.m. today -- nearly 6 hours after an off-duty officer spotted him trying to check into a motel in Dania Beach.
BSO spokeswoman Cheryl Stopnick said her department had been contacted by the FBI earlier this week to be on the lookout for Condit. The FBI wanted to question him about the disappearance of Chandra Levy, the intern who worked for his older brother.According BSO, Deputy Art Perry was working an off-duty security detail in the parking lot of the Red Carpet Inn on State Road 84 when a van matching the description of one being driven by Darrell Condit, 49, pulled into the motel parking lot around 3:30 a.m.Perry recognized the blue grey 1992 Toyota Previa from a flyer being circulated by BSO detectives to BSO deputies countywide.Perry showed the flyer to motel manager Robert Keller, and asked him to see if Condits picture resembled the man checking in at the registration desk. The manager signaled the deputy, indicating he thought it was Condit.Perry called for back up, then waited in the parking lot for Condit to return to the van. When Condit got in the drivers seat, Perry approached him and asked for identification. He produced a Florida identification card bearing the name Stanley Buchanan.Perry recognized the name as alias used by Condit and asked him to step out of the van. When Condit refused, Perry and his back-up removed him, placed him on the pavement and handcuffed him. A small amount of marijuana was removed from his right front pocket.Darrell Condit was last arrested in Florida in November 1996 and charged with driving with a suspended license, driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of marijuana, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said Tuesday. The search for Darrell Condit heated up this week after the New York Post reported that the family of the missing intern thought police should question the congressman's younger brother in connection with her disappearance.Police in Fort Lauderdale received a tip on Wednesday that Darrell Condit, using the alias Stanley Buchanan, was staying at the Jolly Shores Resort Motel on North Ocean Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale earlier this month, said Fort Lauderdale police spokesman Mike Reed. The Jolly Shores Resort Motel was Condit's home from June 5 to July 16, said Liz Griggs, who manages the motel with her husband, George.Darrell Condit was using the name Stanley Buchanan, the managers said.Fort Lauderdale police had arrested Stanley Buchanan in October 2000 for possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest without violence, Reed said.Darrell Condit was ultimately caught at yet another motel -- located just a short drive south on Interstate 95 from the Jolly Shores. The Modesto Bee of California reported Monday that Darrell Condit is Gary Condit's brother, and that Darrell Condit ``had an outstanding warrant in Florida for driving under the influence.''Herrin, the Monroe sheriff spokeswoman, said ``Between 1994 and 1996, we saw him as regular visitor to our detention facility. After 1996, we didn't have any contact with him at all.''Records show that Darrell Condit did live in Key West during the mid-1990s.The Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Web site listed a Darrell Condit as a Monroe County fugitive. His bond was set at $50,000.It is unclear whether police will question Darrell Condit about Levy, whose name has been linked with Condit's older brother, a California Democrat.Gary Condit has been under intense media scrutiny since Levy, a former intern at the Bureau of Prisons, was reported missing 2 1/2 months ago.A police source has said Gary Condit admitted having an affair with her when he was interviewed by investigators July 6.Police sources also say Gary Condit acknowledged speaking to Levy the day before she disappeared. Police have said repeatedly the congressman is not a suspect in the intern's disappearance, which still is classified as a missing-person case rather than a crime.``We're not ruling anything out,'' Sgt. Tony O'Leary of the District of Columbia Police Department said Tuesday night when asked if his agency would question Darrell Condit about the Levy case if he is caught. ``The Levy case is still an active critical missing persons case.''Source: Miami Herald (FL)Author: Erika BolstadPublished: July 21, 2001 Copyright: 2001 The Miami HeraldContact: heralded herald.comWebsite: http://www.herald.com/CannabisNews Justice Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/justice.shtml
