ALERT: Drug War Bill Threatening Freedom of Speech

justice An insidious attack on the 1st Amendment is taking place, and your help is needed to stop a bill that the House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to "mark-up" on Tuesday, May 8th or Wednesday, May 9th. Your help is needed to oppose the bill in Judiciary until then and in the larger House if it gets through.

Please visit:

http://www.drcnet.org/freespeech/ and tell Congress that H.R. 2987, the so called "Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation Act of 1999" won't stop meth but will injure the Constitution.

If H.R. 2987 passes, anyone whose web site even links to certain kinds of drug information could face up to ten years in federal prison. Groups like DRCNet that are devoted strictly to policy reform could be placed at risk through association. Web sites helping patients make decisions about marijuana as a medicine could elicit the heavy hand of the criminal justice system, as could sites helping to reduce the harm of drug addiction through safer-injecting techniques and other harm reduction measures.

Other provisions of the bill are no better, requiring the US Sentencing Commission to increase mandated federal penalties for methamphetamine offenses and moving drug policy as a whole further down the drug war's destructive path. Please tell Congress you oppose H.R. 2987 in its entirety, but that you're particularly opposed to the sections titled "Advertisements for Drug Paraphernalia and Schedule I Controlled Substances" and "Criminal Prohibition on Distribution of Certain Information Relating to the Manufacture of Controlled Substances."

Please visit http://www.drcnet.org/freespeech/ to send a free e-mail or fax to Congress. While you're doing that, please write down your Representative's phone number, which our system will provide, and call it to make even greater impact, or just call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be transferred.

Please make your voice heard today, while you can!

Belgium
It is indeed a strange and sad state of affairs, when Americans have to renounce their citizenship to obtain freedom from the American gulag.
The fact that our supposedly "represenative" government is so corrupt, and pretending to be blind to this egregious, and obvious injustice,is DISGUSTING!
Now we are going to have to move back to Europe,to be free.....dddd

I called
I ahve e-mailed and called my reps.If this bill goes through we become the latest "Russia".I have little hope anything will be done.I fear this country has fallen too far down the slippery slope of totalitarisim. FYI:my husband leaves today to start serving 1 yr. in a Texas State Prison for possesion of pot.He was on probation when he was illegaly searched and they found a roach my daughter had forgotten in my car.Texas said that all that was needed to violate his prob.was for him to be accused of any crime. They stated that it didn't matter if he was found not guilty!!!A friend just found out if we change our citizenship to Belgium possession is not a "jail"crime & that the consulate will go and take him out of prison!!

Good Grief!!!!
I've done all I can,and I trust everyone else has also.
This is a law, which could turn the already shredded Constitution,,further into an unimportant item, that washes down the storm drain, behind the wrapper of a snickers bar,and a gatorade label .
Once again,I must reluctantly be the "doomsayer",and predict that this OUTRAGE!,will slip under the American publics perception, and be passed.
Has anyone noticed any coverage of this ghastly bill in any of the national media?..No one knows about this devious twisting of democKracy. The public is in the dark. This outlandish outrage will slip in,under the wire,as the disinformed publc drives off to work to make their house and car payments.Yet somehow, mysteriously, the local paper, and the TV/radio news has no coverage of this insidsious travesty of American natzi-ism.The two words are disturbing when seen together, but more and more,an uninformed public is being hoodwinked,by a monster-machine,that is the new "Evil Empire"
This sucks!...Beware!...

All we can do is hope for the best, and keep on,Keepin on.......dddd

It is far less costly to stop the censorship provisions of this bill now than it will be to stop it in court once if it becomes law. Please Act Today!

this piece of poop
Well if this bill is not censorship, I don't know what is. If this passes I think it will be remembered as a moment that pivetal. Hatch is a hypocritical bigot and Feinstein is just another scapegoating politician. A joint would help them both. Everyone write your congressmen.
