Oakland on a Roll with Marijuana Measures

medical California -- In Oakland, the marijuana business has become the toke of the town. This week the City Council unanimously approved a measure that doubles the number of allowable pot dispensaries in the city to eight. That decision complements a July policy measure to issue four permits for indoor grow facilities of limitless size.

City officials also have nearly tripled the sales tax rate on medicinal dispensaries and doubled the cost of annual permit fees to $60,000, claiming adequate regulation was dependent on having more money coming into city coffers. Yeah, right.

A more plausible explanation is that Oakland officials have found a cash cow and plan to milk it for everything it's worth - and it's exactly what they should do.

City Hall's practice of relying on real estate transfer taxes to keep the budget afloat has been a fiscal disaster, so any new tax stream that eases residents' burden should receive a welcome wagon reception.

San Francisco, a city with nearly twice Oakland's population, has more than 40 pot clubs.

Berkeley, which has a quarter of Oakland's population, has three.

Oakland city officials should allow even more.

District Seven Councilman Larry Reid, an adamant opponent of the city's first medicinal marijuana law in 2004, has reversed course and is now one of the city's leading elected pro-cannabis advocates.

USA
I was being sarcastic - for the political class America is the land of milk & honey. Meddling and control are the predominating values of the USA for them. We have military personnel in 174 countries around the world!!!

I prefer Thomas Jefferson's America

Beautiful
For govt. this is like the 12-step program....first, look in the mirro and overcome denial. Admit that you're a shameless whore for money! You live to take money from other hard-working folks.

Now that we're all OK with that, go ahead take the logical course of action, like Denver. Allow 200 dispensaries, and sink your parasitic claws into each one as far as you possibly can...this is America!
