Michigan -- Renee Wolfe, surrounded by supporters, slowly rolled her wheelchair to the registration table at the state Department of Community Health in Lansing.Applause broke out as she became the first of 45 Michigan residents to submit an application during a mass registration effort organized Monday morning by the Michigan Medical Marijuana Association. "We made it," said Wolfe, who said she suffers shooting pain throughout her body due to multiple sclerosis. "I am so overjoyed (at the turnout). I knew that I wasn't the only one that I was helping." Wolfe, 48, of Ann Arbor, campaigned last year to win passage of a state ballot measure authorizing use of medical marijuana. If her application is approved, she will be issued a card within 20 days allowing her to acquire, grow and use marijuana to ease her pain. To accommodate Monday's registration drive, the state health department set up a registration table in its lobby, said James McCurtis, department spokesman. The Michigan Department of Community Health received 85 applications Monday and 16 over the weekend, for a total of 101, McCurtis said in a statement. "I feel elated," said Charles Snyder III, 31, of Flint, who registered Monday to use marijuana to ease symptoms of nail-patella syndrome, a bone disorder. "It's a monumental step. It's a long overdue moment to legitimize cannabis as medicine. It's been part of mankind's pharmacopeia for 10,000 years. In 10,000 years, there hasn't been one overdose." The perception marijuana is safe compared with prescription drugs is what led John Cuc, 58, of Detroit, to register. Cuc, who suffers chronic pain in his knees, hip, back and shoulders, said he stopped taking one prescription drug for pain because of reports it causes heart attacks. "I don't have to worry about whether the (marijuana) I'm taking is going to kill me on down the road," Cuc said. Greg Francisco, executive director of the Michigan Medical Marijuana Association, said he expects as many as 50,000 to register statewide within the first year or two of the law's enactment, based on what's occurred in other states. McCurtis said state officials are not sure how many will apply. "We simply don't know," he said. "We're taking a wait-and-see approach." Regardless of the number who apply, Francisco said he is glad to at least see Michigan residents have access to cannabis as a pain reliever. Francisco applied because of pain he suffers from a degenerative hip. "After 10 years (of campaigning), it's very liberating," he said. | Why is it that these earth bound, mentally challenged creatures, think that they can tell someone else what makes them feel better and what is right and wrong for them? Marijuana might do this, marijuana might do that? Of course they won't recognize the many positive studies already conducted on this plant and they block further studies. All of the concerns expressed by the you can't do this, you can't do that crowd, would be solved with full re-legalization. Pardon me but I must go now and start handing out a few well deserved Slap-A-Grams. [ Post Comment ] |

By Kelly Rayburn, Oakland Tribune April 7, 2009 OAKLAND — A proposal to increase the business tax on Oakland's four medical marijuana dispensaries won the support of a four-member City Council committee Tuesday, and it could be headed for the ballot July 21. The tax increase is billed as one way to generate a small amount of additional revenue from medical marijuana dispensaries, which require more oversight than typical businesses, for a city facing a deficit that could reach $65 million in the 2009-10 fiscal year. What remains in dispute is what the new tax rate should be. The council's finance committee Tuesday sent the proposal on to the full council, which could set the proposed tax rate at anywhere from $12 to $24 for every $1,000 in gross receipts. The dispensaries, which now pay the same business tax as other retail operations, are on board with an increase from the $1.20 per $1,000 in receipts currently paid. Tuesday, April 7, 2009 (San Francisco, CA) -- San Francisco-area lawmakers have approved a medical marijuana ordinance. San Mateo City Council offered unanimous support Monday for the measure governing storage and cultivation of the drug. Officials say caregivers and patients involved with growing and storing medical marijuana will have to register with the police department after the law takes effect in about a month. Officials say the city will issue licenses listing the user's name, address and phone number. The ordinance also requires growers to stay within manufacturing and commercial neighborhoods, grow the drug indoors and prohibits locating near schools and youth centers. Some medical marijuana advocates opposed the San Mateo ordinance saying it could hurt patients. California voters approved Proposition 215 in 1996 allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana to seriously ill patients. The measure, also known as the "Compassionate Use Act," permits caregivers to grow and possess medical marijuana.
