cannabis Colorado -- Denver police would have to make possession of small amounts of marijuana by adults their lowest law enforcement priority under a proposal a pro-pot group is pushing.

"We're doing this because the city has been unwilling to recognize the fact that people in Denver do not think adults should be punished for using marijuana, a less harmful drug than alcohol," Mason Tvert, executive director of Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation, said Thursday.

In 2005, voters approved Initiative 100, which legalized, under city ordinances, possession and private use of an ounce or less of marijuana by adults.

Since then, arrests in the city for misdemeanor possession under state law actually have gone up.

"The people of the city have no other option but to move forward with a measure to tell the city how they want it run," Tvert said.

Tvert is meeting with city officials at 2 p.m. Monday for a hearing on the proposed ordinance. Tvert said he will then begin a signature-gathering drive to put an initiative on the November ballot.

David Broadwell, an assistant city attorney, said there is still a question whether a policy through an initiated ordinance can be enforced in the city.

"I don't think we've ever had an initiative quite like this one," he said, referring to its directive regarding the administrative behavior of the executive branch.

I'll bet Al Gore enters the race once the front runners hit some turbulance and goes on to win the whole enchillada. Coming out so early give the rest of them a lotta rope to hang themselves. Al's surely has the resume and he won it once before...

Moore
Wow, thanks for the link re: Michael Moore's new movie! It will fun to watch the "conservatives" get all riled up over him going to Cuba.

It's so funny how they pretend to hate Cuba. I think at last count Cuba had something like a few dozen dissidents in jail? Meanwhile Communist China runs over college kids with tanks and commits genocide on a totally peaceful nation (Tibet) and we LOVE them!

The difference is that Castro took a lot of wealth and land holdings from some very powerful US families when he nationalized everything in Cuba (including the Bushes, btw). Conversely, China's government perpetuates a system of near slave labor for those same families and their corporations and has given them the feudal system they always wanted. See the middle class vanish! Goodbye, it was nice knowing you for 200 years....

Don't forget, if the Mexican government hadn't nationalized Hearst's timber holdings and mines in Mexico, it's quite likely that cannabis would never have been banned.

Another "Last" Word
FoM, being that Ron Paul is for bringing an end to the drug war I would think you would support him, but to each, their own. I know you are concerned about other issues but this is a critical juncture in time. The fact that the entire republican establishment is against him makes him an ally, imho. If you want the republican party to survive then go ahead and censor any news about Ron Paul. I just don't understand.

It's a sad day when folks vote for or against any given party instead of the individual.

Thanks Dankhank
Quote from CNN Article:

"The bigger issue in the film is, who are we as a people?" Moore said.

"Why would we allow nearly 50 million Americans to go without any kind of health coverage ... That's not America. That's not the America I want to see exist."

Render ...
A Nun came through here a couple of years ago and spoke one day at the masses, church services, to the masses, Catholics, about stuff and included this gem:

there is NO render up to Caesar ... I found that interesting.

I agreed, since I had had an interesting talk with a deacon who was also a cop in a nearby community.

He told me "render up to Caesar" when I asked why the Catholic Church was OK with caging humans for using a plant.

I didn't vote for Clinton. I felt that the both of them were want to be Republicans and that didn't interest me. I only voted for two Presidents and Reagan was one because I thought he wanted to stay out of families lives. That didn't work. When the drug industry is taken on it will be a battle that won't be pretty. Other countries have health care. I am in a private Canadian e-mail group. I don't post in it but I have been reading it for years. I have never heard anyone complain about their health care ever. It can work even if it isn't the way everyone wants.

When I was going to Church regularly and I saw that Falwell and Robertson were getting into politics (RP) I started to back away from going to Church. I believe in Render to Caesar etc. and that would not be separating God from Politics like it said we should. I feel sorry for people who get hung up on everyone elses life and choices. The world is complex and it will never be like they want it to be. Republicans want us to be a certain way and that is just impossible. The Republican Party is the ultimate control party in my opinion.

health care
FOM that's a good point, I have no idea what Ron Paul thinks about health care.

I had high hopes when Clinton came in that he & Hilary would do something, since that was probably their Number One campaign issue. They were talking about socialized medicine. But they ended up doing nothing and costs have exploded since then.

I kind of assumed that they didn't actually do anything because the insurance industry was their #1 campaign contributor. Single-Payer health care (which I favor and the entire rest of the Western world has it) would shut down huge swaths of the insurance industry.

92 was right around the time I decided I'd vote only Libertarian or Green. I felt really let down by Clinton's action on the environment also. He ran very green, but one of the first things he did when came in was to go out to the Northwest and make a deal with the timber companies to continue logging old-growth forest. He also refused to even propose signing the Kyoto treaty for 8 years.

So I am definitely with you in wishing the Republican Party would go extinct or something! I guess I just feel let down by the Democrats. Just trying to explain why I love Ron Paul even though he is under the Repug banner. He would probably be against socialized medicine, but he is VERY anti-war.

All that aside, I think Barack O is the most encouraging mainstream candidate I've seen since becoming an adult. I'm glad he recently received Secret Service protection, I would seriously be afraid of running if I was him. Colin Powell said that the biggest reason he decided not to run was fear for his own safety.

What surprises you? Ron Paul is a nice person. I never followed politics to even know anything about him. I think many of us have different views about people in politics so it's best to keep our views to ourselves because that only causes anger and division. I don't mind quotes from different people because that is policy. I am following the top Democrats because of my worry about Health Care. I don't think the Republicans even care for people who don't have insurance because they can't afford it.

Excerpt from Article: Mike Gravel
May 14, 2007

Iowa Independent: The Progressive magazine reports that you think marijuana should be legal and available next to beer in liquor stores. Is that true? What about cocaine and methamphetamine?

Sen. Gravel: It sure is true. When are we are going to learn. We went through the Depression and we realized how we created all the gangsters and the violence. When FDR came in he wiped out Prohibition. We need to wipe out this whole war on drugs. We spend $50 billion to $70 billion a year. We create criminals that aren’t criminals. We destabilize foreign countries. With respect, to marijuana, Doug, I’ll tell you what: Go get yourself a fifth of scotch or a fifth of gin and chug-a-lug it down and you’ll find you lose your senses a lot faster than you would smoking some marijuana.

Independent Iowa: Yeah, I’m 37, I think most people in my generation agree with that point on marijuana. What about cocaine and meth?

Sen. Gravel: We need to legalize the regulation of drugs. The drug problem is a public health problem. It’s not a criminal problem. We make it a criminal problem because we treat people like criminals. You take a drug addict, you throw him in jail, you leave him there, and he learns the criminal trade so that when he gets out you have recidivism.

I don't have any trouble finding news articles about Ron Paul on Google if I want to find something. Even though I have a TV they don't talk about anything important but Google catches about everything needed. I don't want anyone to think this is a Republican web site since it does make me physically sick.

FoM,
I understand how You want to not be reminded of the Republicans (You may be reading while You'r trying to eat, or something- with out puking...) but...

I appreciated getting that info about Ron Paul from mayan.

I don't care for the Republicans but I welcome interesting news from any party and since I don't have TV, this is often My primary source for a heads-up...

Cannabis prohibition is politics. It involves politics and it would be difficult to confront cannabis prohibition with out confronting politics.

That link about how the main stream Repubs are trying to screw Ron Paul is important to help stop the screwy ones.
