| New Mexico Approves Medical Use of Marijuana |

Albuquerque, N.M. -- New Mexico doctors are allowed to prescribe marijuana to help some seriously ill patients manage symptoms including pain and nausea under a bill signed into law by Gov. Bill Richardson on Monday."This law will provide much-needed relief for New Mexicans suffering from debilitating diseases," Richardson, a Democratic candidate for U.S. president in 2008, said at the signing ceremony. "It is the right thing to do." The southwestern state is the 12th in the United States to endorse the use of marijuana for medical uses. New Mexico's state legislature is the fourth in the country to enact such a measure. The law allows marijuana use by patients suffering from several conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, and multiple sclerosis and epilepsy, according to Richardson's office. U.S. states that have backed medical marijuana have, however, come into legal conflict with the 1970 federal Controlled Substances Act barring marijuana. Courts have said federal law trumps state law. Just last month, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled a California woman with an inoperable brain tumor may not smoke marijuana to ease her pain even though California voters approved its medicinal use in 1996. In 1978, New Mexico began allowing very limited use of marijuana, or its active ingredient, THC, to help control cancer patients' nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, but only when other nausea-control drugs failed. The law creates a panel of eight expert physicians and other health care workers to supervise the program. Qualified patients must be under a doctor's care and supervision, the news release said. "I would like to thank the governor for ... giving me another shot at life," said Essie DeBone, who suffers from advanced complications from HIV/AIDS. | Freedom is a wonderful word. I think the future of getting more freedom is coming. Why it has been this bad is because of those in power. They don't care about people just their close contacts and lobbyists. Money is almost a god to some on the right. On the left people are more spiritual but not religious I've noticed. The heart is a powerful tool for change. Money is a means to and end for some people but it isn't a solid foundation to build upon. [ Post Comment ] |

| and why more isn't happening. "Something" ain't "happening here. What it is ain't exactly clear." When did people become so afraid of "Freedom"? Why do we have "rulers" who ignore the "will of the people" when they personally don't agree with the "will of the people"...even in a supposedly free election and vote situation? It would be so nice to see some real progress and real freedom for people...not corporations... start up in this old world. They didn't raise me right for me to stand by and watch horrible injustice go down all over the place because of unjust laws, unjust government, crazy, cruel leaders, and unjust law enforcement practices. It pains my very soul. I was raised to believe in a special and true American freedom that no longer exists...if it ever did...and I'm so angry about it. Freedom. The real and good America. | I agree. I talk to people and one thing they say is marijuana shouldn't be against the law but no one thinks hard drugs are good and they should be controlled. The two are as different as night and day around this area of the country. [ Post Comment ] |

| LEAP never talks about ending cannabis prohibition. LEAP treats all drugs as if they are indistinguishable. Say something about medical marijuana. Say something about cannabis specifically. Help us or we are not going to believe that LEAP cares about our concerns. [ Post Comment ] |

After you have read a blog that touches you -- respond to them ask them to be at a event or what they think of such and such. | I don't remember that but I block a lot of bad things out of my mind. I believe that if a person hurts another person they should try to make it right. They shouldn't be paid but should do good deeds as a volunteer and in time people might believe them. [ Post Comment ] |

| It was in comments about a LEAP story that, likely, Ekim posted wherein I asked what penance the LEAPers were going to do to atone. I specifically asked if they were going to return to their former jurisdictions and work to free their victims. Sorry for the mixup ... Greg Lake was a member of the very fine "Emerson, Lake and Palmer." Richard Lake of MPP is the miscreant.

i know all to well how it feels, but i have also had the chance to meet first hand with two Leap speakers. | This alternet story explains my attitude about LEAP. It's the same with them ... They were instrumental in persecuting non-violent substance-users for years ... retired and got a pension ... and now are sorry for what they did. No penance, instead, a new vocation wherein they get accolades for coming to a realization that what they did was WRONG. For this position I endured a hate-filled personal attack in this venue from Greg Lake of MPP. He never responded to my last comment to him, merely hid, as a coward, and left the insults for posterity. Now they love Bob Barr. MPP ... what's in your head? [ Post Comment ] |
