Transcript: Why Not Cash in on Marijuana Crops? |
Posted by CN Staff on December 19, 2006 at 11:04:02 PT Tucker Carlson Source: MSNBC CARLSON: Thanks. Corn, hay, soybeans, all three have long been thought to be the cash crops of America, but marijuana, no way. Think again. According to government statistics, just released, the market value of marijuana produced right here in the U.S. exceeds 35 billion dollars a year. It is the number one cash crop in twelve states. Another reason to legalize it? Back again, Republican strategist Terry Holt, MSNBC political analyst and former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, and the editor at large of the “New Republic” magazine, Peter Beinart. Peter, as the liberal here, you‘re obviously for legalizing all drugs and giving them to kids. What about marijuana... PETER BEINART, “THE NEW REPUBLIC”: Except for my own, yes, or yours. CARLSON: There does seems this—there does seem this, kind of, growing, unspoken feeling among Americans, under 50, that marijuana is going to be decriminalized at some point. Is this imminent? BEINART: Americans under 50? I thought it was Americans around the age of 50 who were the ones who would really have the biggest experience. CARLSON: The ones with glocoma. BEINART: The people of our generation, we‘re really traditionalists. I think there is—the war on drugs isn‘t an issue that gets discussed a lot in political campaigns, but my sense is that there‘s a lot of unease about it, that there are a lot people who don‘t spend a lot of time thinking about it, but when they are forced to think about, they do wonder whether it makes really so much sense for us to be spending huge amounts of resources, locking vast numbers of people up for doing something which really doesn‘t hurt anyone, but themselves. CARLSON: Now Pat, 40 years ago, when Americans started smoking marijuana in great numbers, a lot of marijuana was grown in Mexico. It was brown. It was lost of stems and seeds and it was very week. Thanks to American ingenuity, our marijuana, grown in this country, in doors in a lot of places, like Vermont, is the most powerful in the world. That says something good about the American spirit, don‘t you think? BUCHANAN: It does. I wouldn‘t be surprised to see it all legalized one day. These movements are moving in that direction. Take a look at what organized crime used to do in the 1930‘s. It had—what did have booze, and the numbers racket and gambling. Now we legalize them all, and we get to tax them all. So the government gets a cut of all of that stuff, right now. It wouldn‘t surprise me if they legalize that down road and then the government gets its takes. The government is basically organized crime, as the libertarians say. CARLSON: It‘s disgusting— BEINART: Nationalize the whole industry. CARLSON: I hate that. When are Republicans, Terry, going to stand up and say, you know what, if the government, out of one side of its mouth, denounces cigarette smoking and heavy drinking, and drunk driving, drug use, compulsive gambling, and, on the other hand, profits from all of the above, when are Republicans going to say, we are not taking any more money from cigarette taxes, because it‘s wrong? HOLT: The idea of legal marijuana gives me complete crazy fits. I‘ve got a seven-year-old that I have got to teach about alcohol already. I‘ve got to teach about cigarettes already, and now you‘re going to introduce marijuana at the 7-11? Give me a break. I mean, just because we‘re good at it, doesn‘t mean we should encourage it. And I think—this is one where I am conservative as it gets. No, no, no. Marijuana a Multi-Billion Dollar Crop in the U.S.?
*** Morning Edition, December 20, 2006 · Guess the name of the most valuable cash crop in America. It's not corn. It's not wheat. If you believe Jon Gettman, the biggest cash crop is marijuana. He says growers produce $35 billion worth of weed. Gettman has an agenda: he battles to legalize medical marijuana. But his report sounds plausible when you consider this number from the U.S. government: the use of all kinds of drugs in the U.S. totals $200 billion a year. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6652248 [ Post Comment ] |

It seems to me that big business is really missing the boat in the marijuana consumer market. Lot's of money to be made. My theory is that cannabis consumption will alleviate if not repace tobacco and alcohol consumption, which we all know are both much more dangerous than cannabis. [ Post Comment ] |

A jesting, mocking comment will be recognized by many as the manner in which conservatives have sought to marginalize opposing thought and basically succeeded. We're past the time that we should jest about such a serious matter ... No one, save the Canadian Senate, talks about anyone under 18 using Cannabis. The "Hooked on Drugs" series, while good in its day is dated. The series is dated 2000, I think, so is in dire need of an update ... I emailed the History Channel the last time the series ran communicating to them these facts ... Got a thank-you ... [ Post Comment ] |

The cannabis plant is really resistant, but not THAT resistant, that´s BS... But hey, if thinking that will make their job harder... Specially considering they say aerial fumigation is not effective, if they stop with it that means less poisons on the environment. Let they go on and take one by one out by the root.. From Yahoo.com (AP) Mexican soldiers find hybrid pot plants By MARK STEVENSON, Associated Press Writer LAZARO CARDENAS, Mexico - Thousands of soldiers sent to seize control of one of Mexico's top drug-producing regions have discovered widespread cultivation of a hybrid marijuana plant that is easy to grow and difficult to kill, officials said Tuesday. The plants can only be killed by having their roots pulled, a slow and tedious task, Army Gen. Manuel Garcia told The Associated Press, one of four media outlets allowed to accompany soldiers on the daylong raid. "Before we could cut the plant and destroy it, but this plant will come back to life unless it's taken out by the roots," Garcia said. The hybrid first appeared in Mexico two years ago but has become the plant of choice for drug traffickers in western Michoacan state, a remote mountainous region that lends to itself to drug production. The plants resist chemicals that only burn the top leaves without hurting the root, making aerial fumigation impossible, Garcia said. On Tuesday, dozens of soldiers wielding assault rifles swarmed 38 marijuana plantations, ripping plants out of the ground. As they flew back to their base, they spotted 32 new fields. "For each 100 that you spot from the air, there are 300 to 500 more than you discover once you get on the ground," Garcia said. Last week, President Felipe Calderon sent 7,000 soldiers and federal officers to restore order in his home state and deal a blow to drug trafficking in the region. The state has seen months of bloodshed from warring drug cartels that have carried out gruesome killings, including dumping five heads on a dance floor. Calderon, who took office Dec. 1 after being elected on a law-and-order platform, has vowed to battle drug violence that has claimed more than 2,000 lives nationwide this year. After a meeting with Navy Secretary Francisco Saynez, Calderon said the operation "is being carried out with success."

Guys like Terry can't cope with too much at the same time. Terry reminds me of a movie I seen where a superior is trying to teach one of his soldiers the Alphabet: Okay, this is an BIG "A" Oh, that's an "A", wow, I got it. Now this is a little "a". Whoa man! What are you doing?! Do you want my brain to explode?! LOL

"Peter, as the liberal here, you‘re obviously for legalizing all drugs and giving them to kids. What about marijuana..." That would have been the end of the interview had it been me. Go screw yourself Tucker. That was an insult of the highest order, the guy should have denounced him for it. It is the right-wingers and their prohibition that ENSURES kids have greater access to drugs. [ Post Comment ] |

You're supposed to find any means possible to talk to your kids about pot! The only thing I agree with in those commercials is that you should talk to your kids and educate them about ALL drugs and plants that they are liable to encounter. I just hope Terry Holt's not waiting until heroin, meth, crack, xtc, ghb, etc, etc, are sold at the 7/11 to talk his child about them. [ Post Comment ] |
