cannabis Denver, CO -- A rally headed by Gov. Bill Owens in opposition to an initiative that would legalize small amounts of marijuana was disrupted Friday when proponents chanted, booed, and heckled while speakers, including Owens spoke.

"I am very concerned," a visibly upset Owens told KMGH-TV shortly after the rally. "And if you really want to see the difference, look at the men and women who were with me up here today, and then look at who is out here yelling at us, not allowing us to speak. It is very concerning."

The rally at the west steps of the Capitol attracted about 100 supporters of the initiative who carried signs touting marijuana as a safe alternative to alcohol, said Mason Tvert, director of SAFER Colorado, the group pushing the measure.

They also shouted chants of "Hey, ho, you say drink, we say no," and challenged speakers as they spoke.

Opponents said passage of Amendment 44 would make Colorado the only state to legalize the possession of marijuana for all purposes. If passed, it would make it legal under state law to possess an ounce of marijuana - enough opponents say to make between 30 and 120 joints, or marijuana cigarettes. Coloradans could still be prosecuted under federal law.

"People should consider whether they want to see Colorado become a haven for drug use in America and what that might mean for the level of crime and quality of life in our communities," Colorado Attorney General John Suthers told the crowd that also included those opposed to the measure.

"It's kind of hysterical that the governor would suggest we were heckling him because we attended his news conference," Tvert said. "They tried to paint us as a bunch of unruly people simply out to disrupt this event. This was a public display of peaceful protest."

Besides Owens and Suthers, other speakers in opposition were: Colorado State Patrol Lt. Col. Rick Salas, Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson and Englewood Chief of Police Chris Olson, the president of the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police.

I had a similar thought. One side waves cannabis, placards, around, the other side, deceptions and semi-automatic assault weapons. They have had a chance to 'speak' (arrest, kill) for over 80 years. Pushers of prohibition deserve that at every venue until the drug war is buried

The ultimate in arrogance....
"Look at them. Look at us. You can see we are better than they are!"

Their arrogance and pride blinds them to the edge of the precipice they are standing on.

You answered your own question. That IS what is wrong with politics in this country. But all these trough feeders with Napoleon complexes are about to find out what it's like when things change and the people finally speak. Just a few more days...

Constituents...
Anyone find it slightly "concerning" that Governer Owens is criticizing the voice of his constituents? These are the people he is supposed to be serving, not the other way arround. Maybe he should acknowledge their voice instead of demean it. What is wrong with politics in this country?

The Difference
"I am very concerned," a visibly upset Owens told KMGH-TV shortly after the rally. "And if you really want to see the difference, look at the men and women who were with me up here today, and then look at who is out here yelling at us, not allowing us to speak. It is very concerning."

I agree, it IS very concerning. On Owens' side are liars who trample The Constitution and cage non-violent cannabis users, and on Tvert's side are honest folks who are sick and tired of being treated like second-class citizens.

We will no longer be silenced!

Fear selling union trough feeders
All of the usual trough feeders are against the initiative. What would they do without a drug war. Sit in their offices and bitch about the heat and air conditioning waiting for murder, rape, or theft to happen. AW Shoot Sheriff Bob, no more forfeiture, darn. The marijuana enforcement industry is hanging tough by the trough.. .. Perhaps the trough in the bible belt and the deep south will feed the enforcement industry. That is the only place people are buying their fears. This is a union issue not a moral issue. The union is getting fat at the trough and they don't want to let go. Let it go already fear selling, trough feeders
