  House Passes Marijuana Bill

cannabis Juneau, Alaska -- The Alaska House passed legislation Friday night that would restore criminal penalties for marijuana possession and make it tougher to buy the ingredients to manufacture methamphetamine.

The bill was passed by the Senate last month and now goes to Gov. Frank Murkowski to sign into law. Murkowski sought to change Alaska's law on marijuana possession, which is considered the most liberal in the country.

The Senate tacked on the marijuana provisions to legislation seeking to curb the manufacture of methamphetamine.

The House voted 21-17 in favor of the amended bill.

Murkowski is seeking to overturn the landmark Alaska Supreme Court decision that legalized the use of small amounts of marijuana.

The court concluded in 1975 that Alaskans' constitutional right to privacy outweighed any harm that might occur from using a small amount of marijuana in the home. State legislators set that amount at 4 ounces in 1982.

The bill says marijuana is a more potent and dangerous drug than it was 30 years ago.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska sent a letter to Attorney General David Marquez on Friday saying the organization would sue for injunctive relief if the bill becomes law.

"Plain and simple, you are attempting to further restrict the right to privacy enjoyed by all Alaskans by enacting the marijuana provisions of (the bill)," Director Michael Macleod-Ball wrote.

Murkowski spokeswoman Becky Hultberg did not immediately return a call for comment.

Is it worth it all. I think so. Here's a little true story. We had contractors last year working on our house and they were just like us and we got along fine. The head contractor is in his mid 40s and was newly married. The guys kidded him because he would ask if they could stop early so he could take his wife out to dinner. It was very sweet. We were just informed a few days ago that his wife was killed in a car accident this past week. The grief of loss of someone loved is the worst pain but we go on and we look for hope. Lose hope and life isn't worth living in my opinion. Enjoy good times while and when we can find them.

I'm glad you liked my words, I have a comment which is specially for you because I read what you write here so often and it is important to make this point.

You have to get down off the cross if you want to live.

Do you know that there are no words about the crucifixion in Thomas? None at all. The sayings are what are important, the life that was lived, not the death that followed, and all the words were advice on how to live, not how to die or what comes after. The fixation of the empire which masquerades as the church is on death. It is a church of death.

We are a church of life. God is not dead.

That was, so nicely stated, thank you Whig,

I wonder, how many people are in the same position?

Caught up in this world, politics, war, and God?

These are the worst of topics discussed, and yet,

The prison camps are full, and the government is bursting with greed and wants so much more.

It seems that the good business people, are living a good life, their pockets are full of money and the rich fruits, and tastes of this existence.

Have the good business people of this world factored in the end of their life, that last breath, when they may catch a glimpse, to see who they are in this world?

May God Be Merciful.

For those that do not believe in God or the 'supernatural, there is only an earthen crypt that can house their diseased bones, and like all the rotting, the flys will smell out your flesh, they are so close, specially in the warmer days, they know the difference, they dance on our flesh and bones.

May God Be Merciful.

Twinkle, in the blink of your mortal eye,

You may catch a glimpse,

the comings and goings of our world,

I hope, that 'we those people,

come together,

to end this poverty,

to end injustice,

to end this prohibition of cannabis,

why

because 'we can,

we can end this frenzied feeding

ELinks is a text-mode web browser. Basically it's an alternative to Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer which is convenient to use if you've got a slow network connection or are browsing from a remote computer.

Do you know what kind of bandwidth and resources CNews takes and would it be worth considering using some other hosting service or provider if DrugSense and Mapinc don't really care about it?

I don't actually have a problem about ELinks not working because I almost always use Firefox but I was just testing and confirming runderwo's report.

I use Christian metaphor because it is easiest for most to relate to, and understood by many in our community. I am not a literalist, nor can it possibly make sense to ever take scripture (of any tradition) at face value. We write in code now and we wrote in code then, and we will continue to write in code because the underlying concepts are comprehensible only by direct experience, words cannot begin to describe them with any accuracy, they can only provide a map to help you find them for yourself. How do you describe a rainbow to a blind man? What if the man is not actually blind, but merely has his eyes closed? How do you tell him how to open his eyes?

Cannabis opens our eyes, in precisely such a manner. But then, having opened them, we still need words to tell one another what we see.

The accounts of Christian scripture (particularly Thomas, I think) are descriptive of the observations which were made when people opened their eyes 2,000 years ago.

I can rely on other scripture, and once in awhile I make reference back to older traditions, but for most of human history it was prohibited for the ordinary man or woman to have access to the direct experience, it was restricted to a priesthood. The transformation of the Eucharist is that the experience was opened to all people.

re 31 death would have been better
Maybe there is a lesson to be learned from this prison sentence, if any human being dares to cross the business of the state, they will be confined into such a concrete bunker, isolated, until their last 'breath..

That was so nicely written Whig, except for the christian imagery, I realize that many Christians in a half ass way, believe in thier rituals, the Eucharist, the body of the Christ, the flash of Jesus, and the blood wine part, in the meantime, they cannot see beyond their frightened bottom line.

Religion and Cannabis do so go together, for Cannabis does open your mind, to the endless possibilities of our human kind, while the business' of the FDA may be to protect the publics best interest', the health and safety of every American has been compromised, to the corporate 'interests, it seems that every way you can turn, so many human beings have sold out.

It's really sad those three representatives turned. Because of their greed/cowardice, they sold out the whole population of Alaska, not to mention a symbol of hope for the whole country.

What I don't understand is where were the Alaska reformers? They had such a good thing going. Didn't they feel like it was worth fighting for to protect? If that were my state, I would have been going door-to-door to rouse the people against this corruption.

Speaking of spiritual, I recommend "Cannabis Spirituality" by Stephen Gaskin, famous founder of The Farm commune in Summertown, Tennessee. I was lucky enough to meet Gaskin and get a signed copy from him at the marijuana march in Atlanta in 1999.

Funny how the Democrats and Republicans love to posture and preach and argue, but inevitably, they all come together as one when voting on proposals that take away our rights and increase the power of the government.

In this case, it's clear that the House reps never really opposed the MJ bill, as was previously stated; they just opposed passing it any time other than late Friday night.

Hopefully they've succeeded at nothing more than making the ALCU lawyers busy for a year or two. Gov. Jerkovski's lies won't hold up in a judicial legal battle.

I agree with you. This is odd but we were also members of the Assembly of God Church for just about 7 years too. We were into church seriously from about 80 to 87. I studied and studied. My bible has been underlined and used so much I have a lot of it memorized. I came to a conclusion in the last 10 years or more that legalism is only to control people. It scares the congregation into submission or they will burn in Hell. Parents love their children. No matter how bad they are the parents still love them. Why would God be so mean if we have that ability to love thru wrong doing.

Amen, Whig. Amen!
I didn't come to this decision without thought, and it was only after almost 40 years on this earth that I began to believe and understand the Truth.

The so-called "real" churches are as fake as Pam Anderson's boobs. I left an Assembly of God church after 7 years of membership, and before that I was a member of a Baptist church.

I learned from the inside that what was preached was very selective, and meant only to control the congregation by guilt into following the false prophet by dressing him up as the Holy Christ.

I had to release the brainwashing that I was going to hell if I disagreed with the preachers. I had to understand that our spiritual life is extremely personal (which any preacher will tell you, but if your personal is different than anybody else then you're going to burn in the eternal lake of fire, according to them.)

So much for a personal relationship with our creator.

I really don't care if others agree with me because I'm certain of my own beliefs.

I agree with you but I look at it differently. Cannabis is a mind expanding drug. It allows a person to tune in to what is happening around them. It makes a person see things in a whole new way. Music also helps. When the Taliban went into Afganistan (sp) they made them turn off the music. No more music. Read the article from Israel in this thread. Turn off the music. Music with a message goes very well with Cannabis. So for me it is a culture issue but the hippie culture was founded on wanting to get closer to God. The arts are shunned by the right wing parties unless Brittany Spears is considered music.

FoM: Why do they hate cannabis?
There is no removing the subject of religion from this question, because it is central to the position of both sides. I know you don't always agree with my statements about the spiritual importance of cannabis, but bear with me because if you want to know why people feel such strong emotions you cannot ignore that what I am saying is something a lot of people do believe.

Cannabis is, to us, the Eucharist, it is the spiritual bread which brings us into the anointed Christ. In the Jewish tradition that preceded this metaphor, it is the Tree of Life (and many of us know this, but forget Genesis 3:22-24).

The empire which masquerades itself as the church is not of Christ. It is not of God, but of men who set themselves up as intermediaries, that they may be privileged above others and waited upon as priests who could deliver or withhold grace according to their own authority. They use selected words of scripture (excluding and destroying others), even twisting their meanings, to conceal God, to blind us from seeing. Cannabis, they well know to be the undoing of their power, because it is the opening of the mind's eye unto God, that we may see again and realize that we are not to serve human masters who want for nothing but their own wealth and power. Cannabis is the destruction of the empire.

Police Storm Hippie Haven
By Paul Weston

May 7, 2006

Police swarmed into the northern NSW hippie town of Nimbin yesterday in the biggest crackdown yet on illegal drug use at its annual Mardi Grass.

Police set up road blocks to stop and search vehicles driving into the township, about 60km south of Murwillumbah, as more than 10,000 people flocked to the festival.

Police on horseback patrolled the main streets and officers dressed in paramilitary gear and armed with guns inspected venues including the Nimbin museum, which vibrantly promotes marijuana use with its colourful Kombis inside.

Some residents were furious when police threatened to remove a sign reading "Hemp crops are the go, let it grow" from outside the museum because it covered a council security camera.

Working in teams of five, the officers made few arrests early yesterday but were expecting trouble as partying spilled on to the streets last night.

Police warn an influx of harder drugs such as speed and "ice" is fuelling outbreaks of violence in the town.

Superintendent Bruce Lyons warned the increased police presence would continue after today's rally which includes a street parade at 3pm.

"In the past 12 months there's been a continual rise in violence," Supt Lyons said. "There's been an emergence of amphetamine use.

"Ice is now on the streets of Nimbin. The usage of that is part of the reason for the increased violence.

"And the community at Nimbin is fed up with the amount of open drug-dealing. They want something done about."

Supt Lyons said many first-time visitors wrongly believed Nimbin was a place where hippies who stayed after the Aquarius festival in 1972 continued to smoke pot.

"I think Nimbin lost that badge of being a marijuana town many years ago," Supt Lyons said.

"While I understand that some people want to make a statement on drug reform, the town has more complicated problems in terms of mental health, use of different drugs and more violence."

Mardi Grass organiser Michael Balderstone said the increased police presence would only drive more dangerous drug use underground.

"Heaps of kids last night were taking ice, pills and powder. Police can stop the joints but it just makes them use more dangerous drugs," Mr Balderstone said.

Israel: Inspectors Close Down Marijuana Day

Municipal inspectors pull plug on International Marijuana Day events in Tel Aviv after organizers failed to obtain permit to play music during celebration.

By Miri Chason

People across the world, including Israel, marked on Saturday the International Marijuana Day. Special events were held in honor of the controversial plant in Jerusalem, Eilat and Tel Aviv, where the celebrations did not quite go as planned.

About an hour after the Tel Aviv event was opened in Hayarkon Park, municipal inspectors arrived at the place and asked that the music be turned off, as planners of the celebrations failed to obtain the appropriate permit to play music. Consequently, the several dozen people that were in the park to party were forced to leave the place.

"It's very disappointing that the organizers didn't obtain the proper permits," Alex Katznelson, 18, who came to Tel Aviv all the way from the southern town of Arad said. "The Marijuana Day events in the last few years have been very successful, and we expected that this time too there will be music, nice people smoking water-pipes, booze, and of course policemen and reporters. We knew they will close the party down, but we didn't think it would happen so fast," he added.

Eran Vered, who organized the event in previous years, lashed out at the people behind Saturday's failed celebration: "What happened here today is a disgrace. I produced this event in the last eight years and it was never like this before. The organizers this year are like 'toy anarchists,' and that is why they refused to get the permits."

One of the Day's planners, who refused to be identified, said that she attempted to obtain an authorization for the event, "but the municipality wouldn't give it to us, because this is serious business: You need a business license, as well as firefighters and Magen David Adom to be at the place. Nothing was organized beforehand."

Panama Red is a legendary cannabis sativa cultivar of the 1960s and 1970s, popular amongst cannabis afficiandos. Panama Red is genetically related to Columbian Red. It is known for causing a racy, paranoia-inducing, psychedelic high. Cannabis culture died off in Panama with the rise of cocaine trafficking. Today, there are still panama red seeds available from collectors.

Panama Red Lyrics: Peter Rowan Music: Peter Rowan

Played by Jerry Garcia with Peter Rowan in Old And In The Way in 1973. Also recorded and played by the New Riders of the Purple Sage (after Jerry had stopped playing with them).

Panama Red, Panama Red

He'll steal your woman, then he'll rob your head

Panama Red, Panama Red

On his white horse, Mescalito

He come breezin' through town

I'll bet your woman's up in bed with

Panama Red

The judge don't know when Red's in town

He keeps well hidden underground

But everybody's acting lazy

Falling out and hangin' 'round

My woman said, "Hey Pedro

you're actin' crazy like a clown"

Nobody feels like working

Panama Red is back in town

[chorus]

Everybody's looking out for him

'Cause they know Red's satisfies

Little girls love to listen to him

Sing and tell sweet lies

But when things get too confusing, honey

You're better off in bed

And I'll be searching all the joints in town for

Thank you. I try to be a happy go lucky type person. That's just my nature but what has happened to us in the last 6 years has created a place of anger in my heart towards them. I understand why other countries are angry with us too.

FoM...
...at this point, after reading the last few months' of bills and laws pending and passed, I think they're desperate. I think the time has come at which Drug War rhetoric, legislation, funding, morals, is desperate for a convincing "victory" that they can tell to the proles in support of a revived Drug War. But it isn't heard anymore. People--most people--still talk about the dangers of drugs, but that has nothing to do with justifying Hutchinson's "moral crusade." It's gone; whether we win in the end isn't even the point. The point is clear: Drug Warriors have lost the realistic support of everyday, tax-paying citizens and they know it.

Sell-outs
How many briefcases of our federal tax money did it take to "convince" these errant legislators of the "wisdom" of the new "scientific facts" about cannabis. Turn off the tap: vote them all out!

Why Do They Hate Cannabis?
I believe I know why they hate Cannabis in Alaska. They would rather the people of Alaska drink alcohol then use cannabis. Cannabis you know the HIPPIE thing makes Hippies THINK! Hippies are those who care about what is happening to the earth. HIPPIES care about global warming and will fight drilling for oil in Alaska. I know now why they hate us. We are a threat to them.

It was late last night and I was getting ready to go to bed and I found the AP article. My husband was already asleep and I was so angry that I had to talk to him and then he got really angry. They do things like this in the middle of the dark of night on a friday when they know it won't get any coverage on the news and by Monday some other crisis like rape stuff will be the worthy news. I could write a book if I could write about the corruption at every level.

He very well could have disabled spidering because they can't afford us anymore. Remember we aren't drug policy related but mostly only cannabis.

Thank you for the review on Living With War. I just turned on the CD player and will repeat LWW over and over again as I have been doing since I was able to get it on a CD. I love the man. I don't know if Neil hadn't done this new album how much more I would be able to take. God Bless Him. We will be seeing CSNY two times this summer and it will fire me up for the fall elections. I don't like feeling hate in my heart but what this administration has done to us I can't help feeling that negative emotion.

If we don't get the other major party in power I think we are all doomed.

Thank you. The article is posted now. I said yesterday that I don't speak my mind. If I spoke my mind I would shock people. I can't begin to tell you how angry I am.

Boy Does Homework, Smokes Pot With Mom
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1930598

Excerpt:

HANOVER, Pa. May 6, 2006 (AP)— A 13-year-old boy told police his mother required him to do his homework first thing when he got off the school bus, then smoked marijuana with him as a reward.

The mother said she had been smoking marijuana with her son since he was 11, usually as a reward, according to court documents.

The police interview came after officers executed a search warrant at the woman's home last weekend and seized marijuana, an array of drug paraphernalia and $600 in cash that she said belonged to a drug dealer, court documents said.

That's pretty interesting stuff. This thing we call the internet is like a living, growing organism.

At least now when I google search "rush", the band's site is on top of pill-boy's! The previous time I checked, pill's site was first. Can't have that!

What about the DEBATE???
The bill says marijuana is a more potent and dangerous drug than it was 30 years ago.

This bill says the fascists are more potent and dangerous than they were 30 years ago.

What about the debate that the House previously thought was lacking? THE DEBATE??? So the House passed a bill that will overturn every Alaskan's Constitutional right to privacy...WITHOUT A DEBATE??? A debate would have brought up the argument that if cannabis is indeed stronger an Alaskan would need to smoke less! More potent is safer!!!

WHAT ABOUT THE DEBATE?!?

I added a CNews link to the two Wikipedia articles that are in the top hits, that should help once they get crawled again. CNews is first on the SECOND page of Google results for 'cannabis' right now.

I don't know why but we have dropped off google search when using the word cannabis. I know our site has been downsized but I didn't think it would make us invisible. I did send a note to Google about it. Are they trying to censor big reform web sites? We were always in the top 3 when using the word Cannabis.

What a Shame
I don't know what to say. I guess I didn't think they would do this but that's the power of this administration.
