Marijuana Research? Don't Hold Your Breath |
Posted by CN Staff on April 24, 2006 at 07:54:12 PT Editorial Source: Republican Massachusetts -- The United States Food and Drug Administration relies on the nation's top scientists and medical experts to determine whether a drug is safe or harmful. Sometimes, the decision is the result of studies done at public universities, such as the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. On other occasions, it is based on a review by the government's own top scientists. That's mostly how it works. On Thursday, the FDA ruled that there are "no sound scientific studies" to support the medical use of marijuana. This time, the FDA ignored the advice of its own top scientists. In 1999, a review by the Institute of Medicine, a part of the National Academy of Sciences, the nation's most respected scientific advisory agency, concluded that marijuana is "moderately well-suited for particular conditions, such as chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and AIDS wasting." An FDA spokeswoman said a new review that included input from the federal drug enforcement agency found that "smoked marijuana had no currently accepted or proven medical use in the United States and is not an approved medical treatment." At about the same time that the FDA was under the influence of the Drug Enforcement Administration, DEA officials were blocking attempts by a University of Massachusetts professor to study the medical benefits of marijuana. Lyle E. Craker, a plant and soil sciences professor at the Amherst campus, was finally denied a permit after a four-year battle with the DEA to obtain a permit to grow marijuana for scientific research. The DEA said it would lead to greater illicit use of marijuana. The FDA says there are no sound studies to support the medical use of marijuana, but it is also taking advice from the very agency that is blocking the studies. This raises the question: Who is smoking what in Washington? The DEA has enlisted the FDA in its fight against the legalization of marijuana, and once again a federal agency that most Americans had trusted to be above politics is in the thick of it. If the FDA won't listen to the scientists, Congress should take steps to see that it does. Given the disdain for science currently in Washington, we won't hold our breath. We must be getting tired. I can't believe we didn't start compiling these from moment one. The DIN number is brilliant. Why did none of us think of that? I feel pretty dumb and tired right now. Thank you so much, Marc, our true and dear friend, for shaking us from the daze of it all a bit. We're always getting slapped in the face by someone and I think we just stand and take it so much that we are getting numbed or over stunned by the slaps. Thank you so much, Marc. I think we have some power in this realization. Do we not? [ Post Comment ] |

Thanks Sukoi :) Of course I don't mind! It's all public information in our forums. :) The more who know the truth..the better, and the closer we'll be to fully legalize our medicinal herb worldwide! Marc [ Post Comment ] |

All prescriptions in U.S. need an FDA approved DIN (Drug Identification Number)on the prescription label. If this DIN number for medical marijuana wouldn't exist, the 7 approved federal medical marijuana patients wouldn't be able to receive their marijuana prescription every month. Your'e welcome my Friends! :) I have been accumulating these studies that I found here and there on the net since November 2003. YES, it's hard work, but it's a worthy cause! :) There's also the fact that there are still 7 legal "federal" medical marijuana patients in U.S., which receive for "FREE", 300 grams of FDA approved and FDA labeled medical marijuana prescription every month. Medical marijuana has an FDA "DIN" number in U.S. since the 1940's. I just hope that someone will send this list of links to America's major medias to prove that the FDA not exactly telling the truth about medical marijuana! Take care! Marc [ Post Comment ] |

That is an amzing list of links, and you have proved to all of us that the FDA is corrupt. But, we knew that years ago, now didn't we? [ Post Comment ] |

I keep a note book of medical marijuana articles. You just gave me more good articles! : ) Thank you! I LOVE taking new articles to my doctor (who once admitted to me that he used to smoke pot as a kid). I hope that others will take advantage of your hard work and start their own notebooks to show to their doctors and friends in need of this heaven-sent herb. Time to warm up the printer!
