  Class D? Class A? Deciphering Drug Classifications

cannabis MA -- Both the Massachusetts and Federal statues classify drugs according to their relative potential for abuse. Criminal penalties for offenses vary according to the classification of drugs, termed "controlled substances".

The Massachusetts statue groups controlled substances into Classes A through E for purposes of specifying criminal penalties; the federal statute groups them into Schedules I through V.

Listed below are Massachusetts and federal classifications of the more widely-known controlled substances. Generally, narcotic, addictive, and other drugs subject to a high potential for abuse are listed in Class A or B and Schedule I or II. It will be noted that the Massachusetts Controlled Substances Act places marijuana and hallucinogenic substances in lower classifications that does the federal statute.

Class A; Schedule I

Heroine, morphine, opium poppy, cocaine, codeine, methadone, amphetamines, speed, phencyclidine (PCP, "angel dust")

Class B; Schedule I

methaqualone, Diazepam (valium)

Class B; Schedule II

Hallucinogenic substances, including dimethoxyamphetamine, (STP), mescaline, peyote, psilocybin (Mexican mushroom), tetrahydrocannabinois (THC, the active ingredient in marijuana)

Class C; Schedule I

tetrahydrocannabinois (THC, the active ingredient in marijuana), Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)

Class C; Schedule IV

chlordlazepoxide (Librium)

Class D; Schedule I

Marijuana

Class D; Schedule IV

Barbital, Phenobarbital, compounds containing small percentage of codeine, morphine or opium

Class E; Schedule V

Compounds containing small percentage of codeine, morphine or opium
