medical United Kingdom -- Researchers from Imperial College London are looking for volunteers to test whether cannabinoids, the active ingredient of cannabis, can be used to alleviate the sensation of breathlessness caused by illnesses such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The team are looking for volunteers aged between 50 and 70, who don't have breathing difficulties.

Dr Elspeth Pickering, clinical research fellow, from Imperial College London and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, says: "Despite the best efforts of scientists for many years, no one has been able to develop a way to deal with the sensation of breathlessness without suppressing the drive to breathe. Breathlessness can have a major impact on the quality of life for patients with respiratory diseases, and by using a cannabinoid, we hope to find a way to block the mechanism which causes it."

The researchers believe the cannabinoids could be used to reduce the sensation of breathlessness without depressing the respiratory system.

The study will take a morning on two different days, during which time volunteers will be hooked up to a circuit to regulate and measure their breathing. Carbon dioxide will be added to the air breathed by the volunteers, causing the sensation of breathlessness. This is a safe method of simulating breathlessness as the body naturally produces carbon dioxide.

Afterwards the volunteers will be given a spray which includes tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in cannabis, which researchers hope will reduce the sensation of breathlessness.

Dr Anita Holdcroft from Imperial College London and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and study leader, adds: "The special formulation of the drug as a spray avoids the harmful effects of smoking cannabis. We hope the drug will stop the sensation of breathlessness, potentially providing a new way to deal with respiratory diseases."

The study will be conducted at Charing Cross Hospital in west London. Volunteers will be paid for their time committed to the study. Volunteers aged between 50 and 70 who don't have breathing difficulties and wish to take part should call 020 8846 1234 ext. 7055 to register their interest.

What???
I love medical research ...

In order to test whether cannabinoids, the active ingredient of cannabis, can be used to alleviate the sensation of breathlessness caused by illnesses such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, (COPD), they must test volunteers aged between 50 and 70 who don't have breathing difficulties.

Must make sense to someone ...

BTW ... Weeds #5 was as good as the rest ....

Love that show ....

I'm not sure I understand. I love that song by Bob Dylan. Many years ago songs about pot smoking were ok and played on the radio.

O T
Johnny Stash and the Bagmen just lost the final theme song spot in the Tommy Chong documentary to be shown at the upcoming Toronto Film Fest to Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women" (aka "Everybody Must Get Stoned"). The filmmaker didn't agree with my strong feeling that Dylan was lambasting pot smokers in that song, and I wonder if I'm alone in my assessment. Hasn't anyone else noticed the over-the-top background noise of goofy revelers, Dylan singing with a similarly silly tone, and the sloppy harmonica solo? Dylan reportedly got his band drunk and stoned, and then had them switch instruments before recording the track for Blonde on Blonde. (Can anyone provide confirmation on this or other background, like Dylan commenting on the song in print?)

Also, the lyrics are quite hopeless to me, concluding that we will forever get stoned (in the Biblical sense) for anything and everything we try to do, so let's just get stoned and do nothing about it (see below).

This raises the question to me, Do we like "Rainy Day Women" as a potsmokers' anthem? Why or why not? Am I missing something? It's rather too late to save the Tommy Chong Bong Song (at least Dr. Demento played it) but I'm curious anyway. Responses appreciated.

In more (heart)breaking news, the Johnny Cash biopic starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon is already the talk of the festival (the one that crowned Jamie Foxx for Ray long before Oscars did) and since a documentary on Cash "I Walk the Line" is also coming out, 2005/6 is being called the Year of Johnny Cash. The lost promotion opportunities with this parody of the human rights advocate Cash are beyond measure.

Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 By Bob Dylan

Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good, They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would. They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home. Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone. But I would not feel so all alone, Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone ya when you're walkin' 'long the street. They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to keep your seat. They'll stone ya when you're walkin' on the floor. They'll stone ya when you're walkin' to the door. But I would not feel so all alone, Everybody must get stoned.

They'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table. They'll stone ya when you are young and able. They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to make a buck. They'll stone ya and then they'll say, "good luck." Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone, Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you and say that it's the end. Then they'll stone you and then they'll come back again. They'll stone you when you're riding in your car. They'll stone you when you're playing your guitar. Yes, but I would not feel so all alone, Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you when you walk all alone. They'll stone you when you are walking home. They'll stone you and then say you are brave. They'll stone you when you are set down in your grave. But I would not feel so all alone, Everybody must get stoned.
