medical Montreal -- IP 751, a potent synthetic analog of a metabolite of THC-the principal active ingredient of marijuana-effectively suppresses pain and bladder overactivity in hypersensitive bladder disorders such as interstitial cystitis (IC), according to animal model study results presented today at the annual meeting of the International Continence Society.

IP 751 is a potent anti-inflammatory and a powerful analgesic, although the mechanisms by which it works are unknown.

For the study, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine injected IP 751 into rat models of acute and subacute bladder inflammation. IP 751 significantly suppressed bladder overactivity in both animal models without affecting bladder contractility. By doing this, IP 751 can ease bladder pain. By stopping the underlying cause of irritation - overactivity of the bladder - IP 751 is able to eliminate the associated pain.

"Interstitial cystitis is a difficult disease to treat, and not all treatments work well on all patients," said Michael Chancellor, M.D., professor of urology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. "Any new option we can give our patients to alleviate their painful symptoms is very exciting."

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 700,000 Americans have IC; 90 percent are women. IC is one of the chronic pelvic pain disorders, defined by recurring discomfort or pain in the bladder and surrounding pelvic region. Symptoms vary and can include any combination of mild to severe pain, pressure and tenderness in the bladder and pelvic area; and an urgent and/or frequent need to urinate. In IC, the bladder wall may become scarred or irritated, and pinpoint bleeding may appear on the bladder wall.

The study was sponsored by Indevus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. IP 751 is currently being developed by Indevus for specialty disease states, including interstitial cystitis, with additional applications in the treatment of pain and inflammation. Indevus Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the acquisition, development and commercialization of products targeting certain medical specialty areas, including urology and gynecology. Results are published in abstract 25.

This is so terrible. I always enjoyed Fats Domino and I hope he and his family are safe. We are seeing law and order falling apart. Our country has always tried to keep poor people out of the news so we look like such a prosperious nation. Well now the world sees us in a whole new light. Are we a caring country or just a capitalistic society? Time will tell.

A Question
Why aren't they dropping supplies into the city? This is not acceptable in the United States to let people die from thirst and hunger. It's just not acceptable.

Where is the help Mr. Bush?

I know that you have connections to the music of New Orleans. I want to say this to you. Even though the city is destroyed the music and spirit of New Orleans will live on. That cannot be destroyed. Soon Houston, Texas will have the culture of New Orleans embedded in it's culture. Where the people live the cultures get blended and something new and wonderful will be born.

There's is an issue that I haven't heard mentioned on the news. New Orleans is a party city. As far as I know they don't have any laws against drinking in the city. Besides not having food and water people won't have drugs or alcohol. That means to me many people will be going thru withdrawal. That is a serious health issue to me.

"Coming in From the Cold" by Bob Marley http://www.bobmarley.com/songs/songs.cgi?coming

SOUND CLIP - REAL MEDIA http://www.bobmarley.com/songs/ram/coming.ram

Like many of the songs on the "Uprising" album this hit single was written whilst Bob was in Miami, recuperating from the foot injury he sustained playing football.

"Coming in From the Cold" is among the most entrancingly melodic odes to hope among the sufferahs in the face of the hopelessness that he had ever unveiled.

An uplifting song that reminds you that the biggest man you see was once only a baby: in the end, everyone is equal.

[LYRICS]

In this life, in this life, in this life In this oh sweet life We're coming in from the cold We're coming in, coming in, coming in Coming in from the cold

It's you, it's you, it's you I'm talking to Well you, it's you, it's you It's you I'm talking to now Why do you look so sad and foresaken When one door is closed Don't you know another is open

Would you let the system Make you kill your brotherman No dread no Would you make the system Make you kill your brotherman No dread no Would you make the system Get on top of your head again No dread no Well the biggest man you ever Did see was just a baby

In this life, in this life In this oh sweet life We're coming in from the cold We're coming in, coming in, coming in We're coming in from the cold It's life, it's life, it's life Coming in from the cold We're coming in, coming in, coming in Coming in from the cold

I agree with you. This is the worst disaster that has ever hit our country. My current concern is how will they house the people who won't be able to return home. I also hope that since New Orleans is below sea level that they don't spend a lot of money trying to save the city but put the money into housing for the poor people away from New Orleans. The city is doomed but the people don't have to be doomed along with it.

When they made the laws harsh back in the 70s terrorism wasn't happening yet. When they reduced the penalties for Cannabis they increased them for Paraphernalia.

Paraphernalia -- possession -- Incarceration -- misdemeanor 30 days -- $750

Paraphernalia -- sale -- Incarceration -- misdemeanor 90 days -- $1,000

Possession of Cannabis

Less than 100 g -- minor misdemeanor*** -- Incarceration none -- $100

100 g to 200 g -- misdemeanor -- Incarceration none -- variable

from what i read, they said there are more antioxidants in coffee than in apples or cranberries and that decaf offers the same amounts as caffeinated HOWEVER they said they are not sure how easily these antioxidants are absorbed into the body. i drink coffee from time to time too, but keep in mind that caffeine is bad news for your heart, dehydrates and blah blah blah IF abused. there are better ways to get your antioxidants - blueberries and pomegranet

US CO: CSU students hooked on hookahs

CSU students hooked on hookahs

Students go up in smoke

By Margaret Canty August 31, 2005

Sweet smoke rises from a group of giggling students huddled around a hookah. This international social trend has gained popularity among college students as a safer and more exotic alternative to smoking cigarettes.

Hookahs are large pipes originally smoked during prayer in India. They are set up with a base filled with water, connected to a hose and topped with a bowl packed with shisha, a sticky, molasses-based tobacco with a sweet flavor.

John Adams, from the smoking specialty store High Country, said hookahs have recently been gaining popularity, particularly among the 18-to-25-year-old age group.

"There are so many types of people who buy hookahs," Adams said. "We have a lot of repeat customers. Everyone is really liking them."

CSU students are taking advantage of the hookah craze.

"I am buying a hookah tonight," said Brandon Hale , a freshman business major. "It helped me meet everyone on my floor, and it's a legal way to relax."

Residence Hall Assistant Chris Lindstrom, a junior history education major, said he has no problem with his residents smoking out of a hookah, as long as they are not smoking inside the halls.

"Hookah does not have as bad a connotation as cigarettes," Lindstrom said. "Cigarettes are associated with cancer, but hookahs aren't, at least in people's minds. They're very social."

Although smoking shisha out of a hookah is perfectly legal on and off campus, Adams speculates hookahs are being used for other things as well.

"Hookahs make it easier to smoke (marijuana) in the dorms," he said.

Adams is not the only one aware of this. CSU Police Department Sergeant Reed Beery said although hookahs are legal if used to smoke tobacco products, they will take precautions to make sure that is all students are smoking.

"Generally we'll get a call that kids are using one (hookah), and we'll swing by and see if we can smell marijuana or see residue. If they are, they are subject to the marijuana laws," Beery said . "If not, we'll be on our way."

Adams said the price of a hookah ranges from $30 to $300 depending on the type. The cheaper ones are usually brass and have only one hose, whereas the most expensive are glass and can have intricate patterns and multiple hoses.

"I bought a hookah for college because my friends and I got hooked on the hookah this summer," said Sam Krey, freshman open option major. "It's smoother and easier to smoke then other things. It's just the hook."

Although it is still smoking, some health-conscience smokers choose to smoke from a hookah rather then cigarettes because it is considered less damaging to the lungs. According to HookahCompany.com, shisha generally has .5 percent nicotine and no tar, whereas most cigarettes have 2 percent nicotine and 16 milligrams of tar.

Another enticing aspect of shisha smoking for some is the wide variety of flavors, ranging from coffee to rose to melon and strawberry, costing around $5 a container, Adams said.

For those who do not wish to purchase one, but are tempted to try smoking one, hookah bars are located all over Colorado, but Fort Collins does not have one.

"There should be a hookah bar in Fort Collins," said Christy Oliver, a freshman business major. "They'd make a ton of money."

The hookah trend shows few signs of letting up.

"Hookah is a bonding experience," said Dan Kramer, a freshman health and exercise science major. "It brings the hall together. It's a great ice breaker."

(coming to MAP) Legalized drugs

Wednesday, August 31, 2005

To the editor:

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (of marijuana), or LEAP, has more than 2,000 members. Members include prison wardens, judges, mayors and former cops. California judge James Gray advocates decriminalizing marijuana. “That would generate $2 billion annually in tax revenues that could be spent on education and drug treatment,” he says (Progressive, August 2005).

Jack Cole, former policeman and co-founder of LEAP, believes that by legalizing drugs and having them supplied by the government, “organized criminals and world terrorists would be monetarily crippled for many years to come.”

This is similar to the Swiss approach. Drug users, including users of heroin and cocaine, are not subject to legal penalties. Rather, they are invited to participate in drug treatment programs. Users who initially refuse treatment are directed to obtain drugs in government-operated facilities. Most of these users eventually enter treatment programs.

This compassionate approach certainly differs from that of “Old Testament Christians,” brought up with the dictum, “spare the rod and spoil the child!” Being immersed in the punishment model for shaping human behavior they, including many in the Bush administration, are unlikely to understand why or how to try LEAP’s alternatives.

Lawrence

New Orleans?

Remember back in about 1942, for 3 years when they made the STEEL penny? America was on a brink...

That’s when the government stopped prohibiting farmers from growing hemp to help America survive. HEMP SAVED OUR BUTTs.

What was it called: hemp for victory???

Hemp can only help America; hemp prohibition can only harm America!

With all the factories that have left America, do We EVEN still have the infrastructure to put hemp on the assembly line?

With the rise of gas going overnight 15 cents a gal. And then another 25 cents the next night (in My neighborhood in the last 2 days- to $2.99…), hemp should be considered more than ever to help America.

It is time to “reintroduce hemp as a component of American agriculture.” (run that quote through Your google.)

By the way, the DEA has been halted (Feb. 6, 2003?) from prohibiting foods containing hemp; but it’s all imported. AMCERICAN FARMERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GROW WHAT THE COMMUNISTS CHINEESE ARE ALLOWED TO GROW; WHAT’S GOING ON?????

I have hemp seeds and hemp seed oil in My fridge, but it comes from Canada.

About New Orleans II.

There isn’t going to be any rebuilding here. (Bush says He’s going to rebuild.) It was below sea level; it still is.

There has been talk of California falling off into the ocean…

Do I understand this correct? People built a large city next to the ocean; BELOW SEA LEVEL?

Are these the same people that built cannabis prohibition?

this article and many others tell of the research being done with mushrooms and their ability to clean toxic waste dumps and rejuvinate our planet. what a wonderful world we're surrounded by and are a part of. the solutions are here and there - we need to stomp out these prohibs once and for all. it's because of them that we're desecrating the rainforests as we could be using hemp for paper and many other things instead. the rainforests are home to solutions we've yet to discover, like ibogaine, a psychedelic with the ability to kill a heroine or alcohol addiction in one use! who wouldn't benefit from a world in harmony?

Re: anti-oxidants
Duh? it kills cancer tumours. How much more of an anti-oxidant can you get? Sorry, I'm medicated right now and that hit me a bit funny. I am hoping we can use this hellish disaster that we have in New Orleans as a rallying point for everyone. The deaths there are incredibly tragic. The environmental impact alone could make that place a toxic wasteland for years and years. Not to mention how this will economically destroy thousands upon thousands of families. But, rather than be sad and moan about the gas being five bucks a gallon (that could really tick the people off enough to make changes), or spend so much time being afraid of what new warning Mother Nature throws at us, why not make this nightmare a choice to unite everyone through the environmental, energy field, medical, etc., aspects of cannabis to make this disaster a reminder of a self-destructive way of life. Wage peace my friends! Out of every tragedy remains the seed of even greater wealth. Sorry, Napoleon Hill quotes sometimes strike me without warning. This year will be a horrific year for these type of disasters, and we are ill-prepared to deal with anymore at this time. And there will be more. I truly believe the salvation of our species depends upon this beautiful miracle plant, and that our time of decision is nearing fast.

Reverend Jim

Pray we have the strength to turn this tragedy into triumph, for all our lives surely depend upon it.

Hi Gary,
Beans & Buds.

What a combo.

That along with the Spirit of truth is a flight.

THCU

As long as cannabis continues to be researched, in Our lifetime it will keep indicating more things it can do.

It IS the tree of life after all.

And when they get done testing it to see if it helps people get rest, somewhere down the line,

it will be tested

to see if it realy can help heal the nations. (see the last page of the Bible.)

The tree of life exposes Bush, doesn't it?

That is why cannabis is on the mind of the anti-Chirst skul n bones member sitting in the President's seat.

He is afraid people will use cannabis to test Him.

We see straight and We see through Him.

Straight through Him.

It would not surprise Me to find out Bush is mountain biking and getting stoned on cannabis. With out the advantage of the "Spirit of truth" that cannabis does nothing for Him compared to those who use cannabis and have the advantage of the Spirit of truth.

With the advantage of the Spirit of truth, YOU are GRANTED to EAT OF THE TREE OF LIFE. (see Rev. 2:7) ((Those who ovecome evil and love one another receive the Spirit of truth and are granted to eat of the tree of life.)) (((see John 14-16 & 1 John for the "Spirit of truth")))

((((That's opposed to not being granted to eat of the tree of life))))

Gotta love tests.

The fork in the road is a test.

Through that Spirit of truth, everyone can go to Christ God Our Father and varify what I've been saying.

That is how everyone can test Me, too.

You ask Him, Yourself.

If I Am true, He will tell You so and will not lie to You.

The Ecologician will confirm and add to it!

He will put a new shiver down Your spine.

News reports say coffee is a leading antioxidant according to a new study where 50 kinds of dietary antioxidants were compared. I couldn't find the actual study, and assume cannabis was not among the 50.

So, how does cannabis compare to coffee? Is thee any studies or other evidence that allow us to compare?

Me me me!!!
I suffered from IC for about two years, and it kept me from sleeping and after a year of not sleeping enough I developed fibromyalgia.

Then I started having nightmares about my childhood, and I hada complete and total flareup of PTSD and my life became a living hell of chronic mental and physical pain.

Finally some stoner took pity on me and offered me a joint, and my life began to turn around.

After three months of daily use, my bladder started to behave itself, the pain in my joints began to diminish, and the sensation of daily ongoing life-critical high intensity drama that is PTSD faded away like rain when the sun comes out.

Why are people so afraid of such a miraculous substance?

Maybe alcohol users projectr their own guilt and self-loathing on marijuana users. That's what I'm thinking.
