Free on Bail: Colin Davies
Source: Manchester Evening News

cannabis Cannabis café owner Colin Davies was released on bail this afternoon amid scenes of celebrations by campaigners. The campaigner had been behind bars since November awaiting trial for charges on importing and possession of cannabis.

More than 50 supporters cheered as Mr Davies came out of Minshull Street Crown Court. His first act was to light a hand-rolled cigarette on the courthouse steps as he waved to the waiting crowd.

Stringent conditions have been attached to his bail, including a ban on participating in or giving interviews about his case and his campaign to have cannabis legalised.

But he was able to say to the MEN: "It is great to be out. The first thing I want to do is to see my children and have an egg and bacon sandwich. I want to say a big hello to everyone at K wing at Strangeways.

"Strangeways is the Cinderella of this government. The conditions are awful but the wardens work hard and try their best.''

Mr Davies is also banned from entering Stockport Metropolitan area or the Dutch Experience - his Amsterdam-style "coffee shop.''

One of his supporters said: "Colin is a great guy. He has never hurt anyone and it's a disgrace he has been kept in prison for so long when he has been convicted of nothing."

"We all want Colin to know that we are still behind him one hundred per cent.''

The trial of Mr Davies is due to begin on June 24.

His solicitor Chris Hinett said: "Colin is delighted to be out and is looking forward to the commencement of the trial.''

Good posting about the class war/drug war comments
It keeps getting worse-1) more and more arrests & convictions. 2) more and more disinfranchized voters (felony type). 3) more and more money given to politics by rich corporations. 4) since the corporations want to centralize all the money changers and big businesses, they certainly don't want any grass roots "cottage" industries like marijuana and hemp to lose market share from the medical industrial drug companies, right? 5) and since stoners tend to become rather apathetic about the individual's potential to change this edictatory society, the greater proportion of those militant older people continue to vote. 6) the only bright spot? a lot of older "hippies" have known for 30-40 years that marijuana is not dangerous (from their own experience earlier) and the dribble of positive research that has come forward & they are finding that it is good for what ails them now. 7) and in at least a dozen or so states, real power has gravitated to the medical marijuana movement. 8) and people are bitter as hell about the hypocritical stance of GEORGE W. BUSH & COMPANY. 9) we're gonna see a backlash against the gun slingers in November, at least enough to protect those brave souls that are trying to reverse the federal stonewallers. SO GET OUT THERE AND GET REGISTERED TO VOTE, AND GO TO THE POLLS-THIS IS OUR SEASON, FINALLY, AND IF WE DON'T KEEP THIS MOMENTUM GOING, OUR FRIENDS IN CANADA ARE GONNA get threatened big time, with neutron bombs or something-Bush will invade if he has too. Why, those Canadians are even sounding like they are a sovereign nation or something! (Too bad Bush can't invade Britain-or he already woulda right?) PAUL

Mad Dogs and Englishmen...
They arrest the guy, and forbid him to enter his own Amsterdam-style coffee shop. Said shop still being open to do business. So what the hell did they arrest him for in the first place? The last days of Marijuana Prohibition in the UK are strange, indeed.

...The new underclass....
...It's absurd to know that there are so many who are not allowed to vote because of a past felony conviction!..Even those who have served their time, and returned to society ,are still denied the right to vote!..I say,,,anyone who is denied the right to vote, should also be exempt from paying taxes!.......the US government is no longer American.

Voting them out with fewer voters?
One of the rarely mentioned byproducts of harsh felony convictions, even for small amounts of a substance, are the laws restricting voting rights for convicted felons.

A 1999 bill introduced in the House of Representatives (which as far as I can tell never became law) stated that 3.9 million Americans were currently disqualified from voting due to felony convictions. The laws vary by State, ranging from four with no voting restrictions whatsoever, to 14 States who permanently deny voting rights. Eight other States require a pardon or order from the Governor, and 16 States disallow using the States' procedure to restore voting rights for federal convictions, the only alternative being a Presidential pardon. Simply put, it's highly unlikely most convicted felons will ever go to the polls again.

We always knew the rich stayed out of jail, but there are very few wealthy people banned from exercising their right to vote.

...p4me...
...thank you for another excellent post.
...I think it's important for everyone to realize, and remember,,,:..The war on drugs is just one element of a far bigger war War on Freedom,,,,which I think p4me and Moyers accurately describe as a class war......It's appalling to become aware of how few Americans know,or care exactly what is happening in the US....As I have mentioned before;the apparent indifference of the American people, reminds me of a type of Cult,,,the empire has a relatively small group of faithful members,,,but by creating and encouraging a false sense of implied patriotism,,and employing diversionary news manipulation,,they have created a congregation of zombie cult member believers!....the Twilite Zone!.......dddd

Thanks, p4me
I appreciate the post about Bill Moyers' comments. It sounds like he really knows what he's talking about.

He is, and you are, absolutely right: we have allowed the rich to buy the government from the people, and there is little now, short of a military coup or a massive civil uprising, that can stop them. The country is no longer teetering on the edge of insanity; it has fallen over the edge and is heading quickly for a splatter.

We must vote out the scoundrels who stole democracy.

Bill Moyers said it best
I was totally in awe of the commentary of Bill Moyers at the end of the PBS program on health care tonight on PBS. I wish I had a link to the commentary at PBS.org but for some reason it is not there like the one last week. There is a war in this country alright and it is a class war. We are in a class war and Congress and Busch are on the side of the rich. Be patriotic and fight this war.

Bill Moyers said: "The vast inequality of this new gilded age didn't just happen. Nature didn't ordain it, the market require it, and Adam Smith's invisible hand doesn't sustain it. What happened is the rich declared class war and spent what it took to win. Not exactly a new story of course but the extraordinary new concentration of wealth and power created a juggernaut that makes it harder and harder for democracy to work for all of us. The rich buy the laws and loopholes they want from Congress and from the White House they buy executive protection for their privileges. So government winds up promoting the extremes instead of moderating them."

Amen Brother Bill. He went on to mention the new laws enacted by Congress in the wake of the Enron scandal that did nothing to limit the conflict between auditing and consulting services of the accounting firms and called by critics "The Ken Lay Protection Act." He mentioned the new $190 billion farm bill that will put a new $50 billion into the pockets of the richest and largest farms in America. He says the new Energy Bill will transfer taxpayer money to the richest energy companies. He said the stock option reform that would limit the practice used by Enron not to pay tax in 4 of the last 5 years is on this day being blocked by the White House, lobbyist and Senator Leiberman. The laws to fix the derivatives that Enron used in its bag of tricks were blocked by Senator Graham of Texas.

He closed his commentary by saying: "Yes, the rich declared class war and won. All that's left now is for politics to divide up the spoils."

The comments at PBS.org show that many people were blown away by this summation of our current situation. The drug wars exist because we lost the class wars. To end the drug wars we must engage again in a new class war and make democracy work for the people and not just the rich. Vote all the BAHstards out of office down to dogcatcher and let's get some new blood working to right this situation.
