Cannabis News NORML - Working to Reform Marijuana Laws
Bush Medical Marijuana Policy 'Not Compassionate'

For Immediate Release
Source: U.S. Newswire

medical A summary judgment last week stated that California medical marijuana dispensaries have no Federal constitutional right to distribute the drug to seriously ill people. The decision is the latest in an accelerating crack down by the Bush Administration on state-approved marijuana cooperatives in California and other states.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer granted the government's motion for a summary judgment and defendants have until May 24, 2002 to respond. Judge Breyer will make a final ruling on June 7, 2002 on the case.

Tired of living in terror of the Bush Administration, grassroots activists across the country are looking for new ways to help patients, even if that means pushing distribution networks underground, while others will focus on civil disobedience at Drug Enforcement Administration or other Federal offices throughout the country.

"The Bush administration is trampling democratically implemented state laws and turning seriously ill people in these states into criminals," says Steph Sherer, executive director of the Americans for Safe Access. "The government's rigid approach is out of step with the public that has overwhelmingly supported reform of the nation's drug laws to help ease the suffering of the seriously ill.

We will aggressively defend medical marijuana dispensaries and the patients they serve from Bush administration attacks through legislative strategies, media campaigns, and non-violent direct action in communities all across the nation," adds Sherer.

Americans for Safe Access (ASA) encourages editorial writers to urge President Bush to not to take away safe access to medicine for seriously ill people. Attorney General Ashcroft and the Bush Administration should back off its un-democratic campaign and grant states the right to choose and govern their own medical marijuana laws.

Medical marijuana supporters have exemplified citizen democracy by:

* Creating state laws through referendums and state legislation.
* Working in full cooperation with local governments to implement safe and legal distribution.
* Planning distribution with the support of local law enforcement.
* Representing national public opinion. 73 percent of Americans support medical marijuana.

"New Drug Czar John Walters is Lying to the Public About Medical Marijuana"

The Myth of 'Harmless' Marijuana - John Walters
http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread12683.shtml

In a recent op-ed in The Washington Post, "The Myth of Harmless Marijuana," by John Walters, director of the Office of National Drug Policy, the nation's drug czar lied to the public about the "efficacy of marijuana to treat various ailments." The person responsible for recommending the nation's drug policy blatantly lied when he said that, "most of what the public hears from marijuana activists is little more than a compilation of anecdotes," and that scientific studies must be conducted first. Walters is blatantly ignoring the White House's own comprehensive review of medical marijuana released by Institute of Medicine in March of 1999 which declared:

* Smokable marijuana works as a medicine for some people.
* Patients are already using medicinal marijuana despite its illegality.
* Marijuana does not present significant health risks relative to medicines that are legally available.
* No evidence that prison is better for patients than marijuana.
* While more research should be conducted into marijuana's medical uses, patients should be permitted to use marijuana in the meantime.

FoM.....printable pages/stickers......
I sure hope your father in law stays feeling better. The quality of life on morphine sounds terrible.Perhaps some nice canna-tea would help instead? Aside from that, you don't have to worry about going out because you already play a very important role in our movement, and I couldn't imagine missing one day without my C-News!Horrors!!! If you have the ability to,perhaps you could design a printer-friendly bumpersticker page with all of themtogether fitting the equivalent of a single sheet of paper at once, that way all you would have to do is print it on sticker stock and cut them part.3-4 per page might do it.If you do,or anyone else if it were archived in a category, then anyone could just go to the spot and print.Wouldn't that be fun?We all love you alot for your great work, and when this is over you will go down in the annals of true freedom fighters in my book! LOL! PS:if this idea does come to fruition, don't forget to put the c-news address on it so we get more readers. Ken

Releafer & Swampie
Swampie

I think it sounds like fun. My problem is it's hard for me to get away for many reasons but mostly my father-in-laws failing health. He has been in very bad shape and is very old and they wanted to put him in a nursing home. We said no and are working around his health issues by being with him more. Something very interesting happened this week. He stopped taking the morphine they gave him and he is getting better. He isn't stumbling and can walk a little better and his mind is clearer. Maybe the morphine was making him so that it seemed he needed a nursing home but for now he is doing much better and maybe if he keeps doing better we can get away sometime.

Releafer

What you said I didn't understand. It was very harsh but I assume you are very angry and were blowing off steam.

4/20 STRIKE...WHAT D YOU THINK?
I firmly believe that we should have a strike WAY before 4/20,and maybe we should try to stage the FIRST ONE for LABOR DAY to get the word out that we will strike back as long as it takes to get this issue on the board. If all who talk to others whom are pot-friendly were to ask those they talk to about this subject, and provide leaflets and bumperstickers on laborday by standing where you are allowed to and not breaking any laws by doing so,then by 4/20 of 2003 we will get more of a following.I have been writing on almost all of my money and putting this website address on all bills.I think it will catch on,as I have seen a few from others in change.Northeast Ohio has a huge population of canna-friendly persons, and I'm sure that Greenfox would attest to that.We gotta get the sheeple to come out of the closet and this sounds like a great way to do it!How about setting the date for:9/11?Not to insult those who lost loved-ones,but it will be a day that people will be paying attention to.It WILL get attention. ONWARD THROUGH THE FOG!!!SWAMPIE

Thanks mchudzinski
I would need to watch the tape again to remember exactly what upset me about the statement. They could have twisted what he meant to say into an anti type statement. I'm very aware that was being done throughout the program. It is a powerful medicine but it is not dangerous.

4/20 strike...
I like the idea. I'll take 4/20 off next year, even if I have to change jobs to do so. I'd love it if they piss test me. It costs the employer $300, every time they do.

It's time to talk this one up. Spread the word that 4/20 is a great day to stay home and work in our gardens. Or attend a concert. Or write letters to elected officials, newspapers, and advertisers who support anti legalization TV.

Johnson/Ventura in 2004!

(If the government/media don't take note of the day off in 2003, make it a week in 2004.)

Scott Imler says cannabis is a powerful drug.

It isn't a drug but a medicinal plant. I was shocked that he said that and wondered why he did.

I can't think of anything more deep
Judge Breyer will make a final ruling on June 7, 2002 on the case.

I feel that this will resolve the issue. Let's just wait. I believe our government is doing everything it can.

Live free or lie
Chandra Levy, 911, selected president, Scott Imler says cannabis is a powerful drug, political goons everywhere, drugs, wars, ass kissing, back stabbing, cloak and dagger, billions lost to whatever, attacking democracy with democracy, coca plantations, FARC, right wing extremists, pink nazis, Al-lies in Afghanistan to steal all of the oil in the Caspian basin, if you gambled yourself into abject poverty during Roman times you became a slave, everytime you turn around somebody has their hand out wanting some money, cameras in the bathrooms at Walmart and Target, sleeping on an exhaust grate near the J. Edgar Hoover Building in downtwon Washington DC, gathering newspapers to cover yourself on park benches on east Pennsylvania Avenue, smashing beer mugs on the floor of a bar, chalk outlines where dead bodies have been found in Seattle's Capitol Hill area, "Men are all US's" with a circle and slash over the word 'penis', 'close down federal building = invasion', tinroofs along I-95 near Jacksonville, Florida, gated communities are like prison walls, obscene housing developments everywhere, hunt down everybody everywhere like dogs to uphold every corrupt government entity, microbiologists being killed; helpless, confused, harmless pipebomber captured, methamphetamine labs have less priority than harmless cannabis. It happened.

Cannabis is the only positive this world has anymore. I'm going to take a nap.

Goneposthole has gonefishing.

I didn't watch the entire show...
...so I don't feel honestly able to comment on the whole program. But there were some things that struck me, i.e. the segment at the Mexican border.

It was rather obvious that the Customs people were nervous. I can only conclude that they were nervous about showing the cameras how little they actually interdict. That nervousness was justified by Altschul's first day on the border: they found nothing.

The next day, a vehicle was pulled in because of the appearence of the lug nuts (too shiny and new) and the tires were rock hard. After a Yellow Lab was busily scratching at it, the tires were removed, cannabis found inside, and Alstchul comments (I don't recall the remark in it's entirety) "That's 100 pounds of marijuana that won't be on the streets" and the Customs guy says, (perhaps a little self-consciously) "Yep, Protecting the community."

But given the paucity of the amounts captured (and, of course, what's captured) you have to wonder. Given the fact that the harder drugs which command higher prices are much easier to transport than bulk cannabis, how many cars got by loaded to max with cocaine or heroin? And how much more damage can a 'payload' like that cause to a community? I'd wager vastly more than someone sitting with a silly smile on their face laughing themselves to stomach cramps at something only moderately humorous or raiding their refrigerator.

So, my question to this puff-piece 'journalist' is: Ms. Altschul, why didn't you point out that they caught the easily found - and far less dangerous - substance, but didn't find any heroin or cocaine - which does demonstrably more damage to society? Why let that Customs agent off so easily? Was this a fact finding mission - or an infomercial for Ms. Altschul's program?

Ever since MTV allowed Klinton to get away with one of the biggest lies in history ("I didn't inhale") they've shown themselves to have all the journalistic spine of a jellyfish and the depth of a sheet of paper. My watching the program last night was rarity, as I was informed by a fellow DrugSenseChat person when it came on. Normally, I just flip right past their dreck to C-SPAN.

At least, they don't pretend to be journalists.

.....Freedom Pricing.....
....No problem with a two day strike,,,it also happens to be National Anti Drug Month,,2003,,and the government is celebrating their newly passed bill, that requires a mandatory drug test, before you can obtain or renew a drivers license...The new drivers licenses are also national ID cards under the new Homeland National Identification Act...........The Republican dominanted hoard ,,,, both federal ruling parties,,have been partying with our freedoms and rights!!!With the usa/patriot act,,they had a Toga Party with our Constitution....
..Just watch...The pillaging of the Constitution,,our country,,our money,,,it will continue!.. I'm afraid things aint pretty when one considers what the new federal empire has got away with already!..The empire has been formed with a coup, that is nearing completion....The democratic system for ruling an empire, makes the Soviet attempt look quite crude.....Enron (from Texas),,shammed the California power crisis, and STOLD BILLIONS .... and I find it quite disturbing,,that no one is in jail!,,,nope,,not one!,,,in fact,,the shrubs head of the US army,,is Thomas White ,former Enron big-dog,,who oversaw the California power crisis grand fraud!,,, Here's the real scary part!;,,White is still the secretary of the army........................The stage is getting set.....in years to come, there will be an 'empire',,,and there will be the masses....And within the masses,,will be the Freedom Fighters!..Todays world is becoming ripe for revolution,,,but unfortunatly,,revolutions are no longer allowed..The empire says; .."I've never met a revolutionary that wasnt a terrorist,,and if you are a terrorist,we will bring you to justice. ...You are either for us,or against us.".... ..................."for us,or against us..." .. that has a certain flair to it! ...."You are either for us,or against us."... that puts me in an akward spot. I must admit,,that I do not consider myself a member of this particular "us"....I am not one of "us"...,,,as a matter of fact,,,I want nothing to do with this "us"...I am ashamed, and appalled with that "us"......I admit..I am against "us"!!...REVOLUTION!.. it almost scares me to write it,,,but yes,,, It's time for a REVOLUTION!! ..one or two day strikes will be crushed...he state controlled media can make anyone into a terrorist, drug user, drug offender.......
..Only a fool would try to fight "us"....only a fool would call for a REVOLUTION!!!.....
I am not one of "us".....dont be callin' me an "us" either.
I am quite happy being a fool..?
...and I'm proud to admit I'm a fool......after all,,if you admit you are a fool,,and accept the fact,, then you dont have to worry about living up to some higher standard that stresses out non-fools.....fools can get away with dam near anything...admit to being a fool, and you can minimize stress,,,.... ..............anyway,, this whole fool thing is just part of my master plan for taking back our country..no one will suspect if fools take over the government, ..it's a proven fact!

"Forget rock, look at hip hop.(?)" What do you think they're sampling?

When MTV came on in 1981 it was so cool. They played concert videos because there was none of this artsy fartsy visual crap. The bands they played WERE the classics I was talking about. It's corporate BS now, but it was make or break back then. They played the artists, they didn't manufacture them.

THIS IS WHY...
I always say when people ask me why I don't have cable:

"I don't want to indirectly pay some MTV VJ's (or on air "talent's") salary kids! YEA - Love it man, love it. Now I know why! This "journalist" chick sounds like a puppet joke - BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHHHH...

Stop paying for cable, see how much "richer" you are spiritually & monetarily.

Personally, I believe you should be able to pay PER channel. For instance, basic fee should (& could) be bout $5 / mo. for box & cable service. Then, all those channels you don't want, you don't pay for...The weather channel =$.25, HBO =.80 maybe $1.25 etc, you get the point. You subsribe to only the channels you WANT. Darwins theory whould weed out the weak, it would be amazing.

It'll prob never happen, I know, but if it did, how many out there would you pay, mmmm, say even $0.50 per mo for MTV?

No?

Yea..that's what I thought.

That's why it'll never happen... so keep on payin that 49 shells a month for that USA grade P(for propaganda) subsidized "news" & I'll watch (& laugh still) for free at fox abc cbs n nbc & their gov't subsidized "news" but at least I have my $588 each year to do with it what I choose.

Think about it: Loose cable & write-in Johnson/Ventura in 2004 for President in 2004...

Things CAN look up people...

* Smoke-rings of aloha *
Looking for a legal and moral way to help patients? How about as a time-honored 'good samaritan' on a mission of mercy to 'comfort' others in spiritual and physical pain? Become an ordained minister of cannabis sacrament, protected by the First Amendment right to exercise our religious freedom. (There is no such corresponding right to medical freedom.)

Churches in the USA have been woefully AWOL in speaking FOR one of the Creator's greatest plant gifts... leaving a tremendous opportunity for us to do the job.

In my 16 years as an activist and advocate for cannabis liberation I have felt one of the greatest boosts in my work came from being ordained, and then licensed by the State of Hawaii specifically as a 'cannabis sacrament minister', license no. 00-313. My own growth and faith in life and justice has become stronger.

Now I suggest to others to capture the flag and claim the highest moral and legal ground available for cannabis...religious freedom. There is nothing to vote on, and zero doctors to beg for a 'recommendation' to use it.

As far as I know, only some Rastafarians and some of those in the Religion of Jesus Church have earned the legal right in court to enjoy cannabis religiously. Ben Guerrero (Rasta) and Jonathan Adler (Religion of Jesus) are the two most immediate cases that I know of in the USA.

Here on Hawai'i island a few of us have built on the work of many others to create our own cannabis ministries. We serve the needs of people by providing the services and sacraments of our congregations, like most ministries do. Only our sacrament is cannabis, the famous 'tree of life', the 'burning bush' of Moses, the food of Buddha, John Lennon, Bob Marley, etc.

See www.jackherer.com www.forbiddenfruitpublishing.com www.taima.org and others for the history

God is 'on high'. God is the MOST high. We like to get high. There IS a connection!

In my opinion, religious freedom for cannabis as sacrament is much stronger, legally, than cannabis as medicine. Check it out for yourself if you are:

sincere legitimate (Be ordained at www.ulc.org.) the sacrament is mandatory and use is in private. (Good manners also help.)

This advice is for those over 18 who are not in 'commerce' with the herb. This is a ministry, not a 'business'. TLC+ THC = harmony.

All the best to you,

Roger Christie

National Marijuana Strike next 4/20?
I think that next year, everyone who objects to the marijuana laws should stay home, black out their web sites, don't go to work, don't buy anything, don't watch TV.

And if they are musicians with videos playing on MTV and VH1, withdraw them from the rotation on that day -- so that all day long, the only music videos MTV or VH1 can play are videos made by artists who support marijuana prohibition.

....yup...no drugs,,No Beatles!....no drugs.......no Cream,,,,can you imagine,,a drug-free Rolling Stones?... Alcohol ,it's a drug... without alcohol,,we would not have the same Hank Williams,,Patsy Cline.....
..as usual,,I'm not sure exactly what I'm trying to say...Drugs and alcohol are not necessarily "good",, but in another way, they can be very good...perhaps the worst thing about drugs,,is going to jail....going to jail destroys far more lives, than the drugs themselves...dddd

Forget rock, look at hip hop
I would argue that without cannabis there would be no MTV, because if you look at the metamorphosis of rock music in the late 60's and early 70's, you can't ignore the positive effect cannabis and psychedelics had in some of the best music ever created.

MTV doesn't rely very much on classics because they don't come with great videos. But what MTV has relied on a lot in the last decade has been alternative and hip hop.

Almost every artist that has made them money in the last ten years smokes weed. Intensely.

Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Cypress Hill, the Foo Fighters, Missy Elliot, Queen Latifah, Erykah Badu, need I go on...

There would be no MTV without the weed, yes I think that is fair to say.

If you removed the profits made for MTV by the portion of their airtime where they played music produced by avid users of marijuana -- what would be left of MTV would be too poor to pay Serena, that's for sure.

Serena, marijuana pays your salary too!
If every marijuana consumer who watches MTV or VH1 flipped the dial for one week, they'd be hurting and they know it.

Serena never added up all the money marijuana has made her.

MTV has gotten rich from purveying music created under the influence of marijuana, and that's what is paying her salary.

MTV and VH-1 are the biggest tools
If you watch the Real World or Road Rules, you'll see young people who abuse alcohol to the extent of vomiting or, in the case of Real World Hawaii, a girl named Ruthie had such an alcohol abuse problem that she would drink to the point of unconsciousness.

BUT, the same network blurs out a cannabis leaf on some article of clothing someone is wearing.

I knew from the second I saw the teaser advertising the show I'd be yelling like FoMs' husband, which irritates my wife as well.

I would argue that without cannabis there would be no MTV, because if you look at the metamorphosis of rock music in the late 60's and early 70's, you can't ignore the positive effect cannabis and psychedelics had in some of the best music ever created.

The consequences of postmodernism in college
The problem with Altschul's report is that she refuses to take into account facts. Everything is an opinion to her. She's obviously been educated by misguided liberal academics who think postmodernism is the next salvationary philosphy of the world.

Some people are of the opinion that thousands of people are arrested every year for simple possession.

It's not an opinion, dear, it is a fact, and when you let a law enfoprcement tell you what the facts are and you fail to look them up yourself and compare the actual fact with what the law enforcement claims it is --

YOU ARE A MORON AND A THREAT TO DEMOCRACTY AND HAVE A LOT OF NERVE TO CALL YOURSELF A JOURNALIST.

But oh doesn't she look hip and down with her funky attire!

Not too square for Pot-TV, not too hip for the DEA.

She could be the new DEA Barbie.

But this is what happens when tenured academics teach college kids that facts don't exist and everything is an opinion.

It's just an opinion that anyone is suffering. Look, here we have our model prisoner to tell us how bad marijuana is and how happy he is to live in shackles and work as slave labor for the state.

If this really represents the younger generation in journalism -- democracy is going to remembered as a transient phase of the planet.

The host of the show thinks pretty highly of herself. Time will teach her otherwise. My husband was yelling at the tv and I said stop I can't hear the program! LOL! It was terribly slanted but the part with Mark Emery in Vancouver was great. I loved it when he said the pot that the plant was grown in cost about a dollar. He is a proud man and has done wonders for Cannabis and has helped many people in Canada. The host was a tough cookie to crack but Emery had her dazzled. He did a great job. You could see the demeanor change upon entering California. The American way is so repressive and full of fear and I do believe MTV gets money from the ONDCP or I think they did.

Or is it that MTV wants its "ad credit" for this "educational special" piece of crap. I got so mad when "Serena" intimated a bay area club was a fraud, I lit a candle, lit a _____, and did some writing instead:(

Grrrrr....I may need another name to vent with here:)

All the news fit to print
Charlie Rose did an hour long show with the family hier that was the bigshot for the New York Times. Charlie Rose went back and talked about his grandfathers' greatness and the journalistic marvel the NY Times was. Charlie served him up the most proud phrase of his grandfather _ "All the news fit to print." Then it was the Times printed this and the Times printed that and we have risen above all others because of our greatness.

I have no need of a salesmark, but maybe someone like NarcoNews or Cnews will see if they can have the salesmark that follows : All the news fit to print my ass.

I know it sounds bad when you say it this way but: THE DRUG WAR IS TREASON.

Starve the economy and have a thrifty meal. VAAI

The Underground Club
Perhaps a large regional distribution system could emerge serviced by panal vans or non-descript medium duty trucks serviceing routes like vending machine owners do.

Clubs then could transcend the need for a permanent distribution center, per se. The main goal being the elimination of a public congregation point to be so easily staked out and raided.

The issue is that if not disturbed by law enforcement or (other) criminal element, cannabis clubs would be Pharmaceutical dispensaries and people would simply come get their requisition filled , or pick up regularly standing orders. Overhead could be quite minimal.

Combine this idea with either the "webvan" or i-Toke concept ( www.itoke.co.uk ) with clandestine transport (bikes/backpacks/dogwalking services/etc). Give a dedicated person several people's packages and essentially run a courier service.

This probably already is happening in some areas due to some people being unable to leave thier homes. Medicine on Wheels, so to speak. So perhaps there is a functional model to build upon.

Again, the elimination of people traffic at a packaging and distribution center and the development of a low-key courier-type network could be a great way around bein raided all the time.

Of course, it sucks to have to hide and sneak around in a "free country" when all we try to do is help people and stay the hell out of trouble.

At least the ostensible goal of prohibition- to keep pot away from us - is a complete failure and we can get weed...usually.

and thus I say..FREEDOM ENDURES

Need for Midwest...
There is a need for some sort of club in Midwest or elsewhere especially in state that voted for Bush or which he lost by a hair and has his sites on. Then, the administration will pay electoral votes for this crackdown.

I really hope we prevail in court on Friday and our ballot initiative direting the City of Detroit Police to make enforcing the MJ laws as to medical users their LOWEST priority (after the city is proclaimed "jay walking free". maybe?) is ordered placed on the August ballot. If the judge agrees, the measure will be on the August primary ballot and I think it will win.

I would love to have clubs of compassion here and then the feds would have to "crackdown" in a city just across the river, twenty minutes away, from Windsor, Canada, where poeple can have legal access. The juxtaposition would make such a "nationawide" crackdown so unpalatable the adminstration would have to back off. I hope, at least:).
