cannabis Thousands of people are marching in cities across the UK to mark Cannabis Liberation Day. The Million Marijuana March is a worldwide event involving people taking to the streets in nearly 200 cities across the globe.

According to the organisation's website, marches are taking place in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Hull, Sheffield and Stafford.

In London the march, entitled Dance on the Grave of Cannabis Prohibition, will go from Kennington Park to Brockwell Park, in south London, where a festival is being held featuring live music, a speakers tent and food stalls.

Across the world marches are taking place in more than 30 countries including the US, New Zealand, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France.

Scotland Yard said this was the fourth time the march had taken place in London.

A spokesman said: "Police have been in close consultation with the organisers and they have ensured police that participants will remain within the law during the march.

"If participants are found smoking cannabis they will be asked to stop. In previous years the event has been peaceful and good natured."

Last year, around 15,000 people took part in the march, according to police.

Pro-Cannabis Activists Hit City’s Streets

Pro-Cannabis campaigners are to take to the streets in Edinburgh in a bid to raise awareness to legalise the drug.

Members of Legalise Cannabis Campaign Scotland will be petitioning on Princes Street to seek more support on Monday.

Linda Hendry, LCCS spokeswoman, said: "We want to raise awareness in the fight to legalise cannabis because the present proposal to make it a C class drug does not mean it is legal.

"The penalties would only be halved if the law was changed to make it a C class drug."

Their plans come as thousands of people were today expected to march in various cities across the UK to mark Cannabis Liberation Day.

The Million Marijuana March is a worldwide event involving people taking to the streets in nearly 200 cities across the globe.

Marches were due to take place in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool.

Across the world marches are taking place in more than 30 countries including the US, New Zealand, Canada, and the Netherlands.

Thousand Gather To Support Legalization of Marijuana

About 1,000 people gathered Saturday in a central Prague park to support the legalization of marijuana.

Michal Polak, spokesman for the rally's organizers, said they sought a change in Czech legislation that would put marijuana on a par with alcohol and tobacco. Now, illegal possession and distribution of narcotics is punishable by up to 15 years in jail.

Polak said the rally participants did not want to encourage people to consume or distribute drugs, but were expressing criticism of the Czech penal code, which does not distinguish between hard and so-called "soft" drugs.

"To grow the plant should not be prohibited by law," Polak said.

In 2000, an estimated 25 tons of cannabis was consumed in the Czech Republic, according to an estimate by the national Statistical Institute.

Similar gatherings took place in two other Czech cities, Plzen and Brno, Polak said.

Marijuana Campaigners Rally

Today is J-Day and marijuana law reformers in more than 190 cities around the world will be holding rallies calling for decriminalisation of the drug.

In this country, J-Day rallies will take place in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Auckland organiser Mike Harding says J-Day is about coming out and showing support for cannabis law reform.

He says 30 people are arrested every day for cannabis possession, though he claims the drug is safer than alcohol or tobacco.

Mr Harding says cannabis and drug use is something which too often is swept under the carpet.

He says politicians need to sit up and take notice of the issues surrounding cannabis use.
