NORML Gov. Jesse Ventura is again speaking out strongly in favor of legalizing marijuana, particularly for medical use. He sent a video address in support of legalization to the conference of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws at its meetings in San Francisco this week.

"I'm sending you this greeting to show my support for the good work you're doing, especially in the field of medical marijuana," he said, according to a transcript of the video. "What are we waiting for? How much should people suffer because others won't use common sense?," Ventura added.

Ventura has long been an outspoken advocate for legalization, not letting his high-profile governorship deter him. A year ago, during a forum on the topic he sponsored at the University of St. Thomas, told conferees that he "fully supports" legalizing use for medical reasons.

He said at that time that an illness suffered by his mother -- and the mix of narcotics she was given to control her pain -- played a role in shaping his opinion.

If someone has AIDS or cancer, Ventura said that the government should not be dictating what drugs people can take to help control their pain.

A bill legalizing marijuana for medicinal use passed the Minnesota Senate in 1999.
