  Medical Pot Advocates Arrested

medical Two high-profile American advocates of medicinal marijuana, who fled California on drug charges and took up residence on the Sunshine Coast, were arrested by RCMP and immigration officials at their homes yesterday.

Steve Kubby, 56, and Steve Tuck, 35, who came to Canada because they feared they would be jailed in the U.S. under that country's harsher drug laws, were arrested without incident and taken to the Sechelt RCMP detachment.

They were later moved to Vancouver where they face an immigration hearing on an allegation they entered Canada illegally.

Their wives are angry because their husbands were not allowed to take along their medicinal pot with them.

"What's taken me aback is that my husband's life is in danger," Michelle Kubby said yesterday. "They wouldn't let him medicate before he left."

She said her husband, who played a key role in winning a California referendum that supported the use of pot for medicinal purposes, suffers from a rare and always fatal cancer --adrenal -- and the marijuana he's been taking stops the disease from metabolizing.

"It protects his heart. It shrinks the tumour in his body. This is not for pain that he is taking it. It is literally to hold the cancer at bay."

She said her husband is appealing a California charge of possessing a half gram of a mushroom stem and four quarter-sized peyote buttons -- charges that would not be laid in Canada.

Officers searched the Tuck residence mistakenly believing there was a marijuana garden on the premises, said Steve Tuck's wife, Lucy Tuck.

"Steve told the officer, he said, 'I will go to Europe. I will leave. You people don't have to arrest me.'

"They didn't say anything and he said, 'So, is this my welcome to Canada?' "

Marijuana keeps her husband from vomiting when he takes morphine for pain associated with a serious spinal injury, she said.

There were three RCMP officers, an immigration officer and an unidentified man who may have been a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency representative, she added.

Her husband, who came to Canada last July, was told he was wanted for marijuana charges in California. She believes another factor in the arrest was that her husband had overstayed the allowable six-month visit.

Two U.S. Medical Marijuana Refugees Taken From Their Homes On The Sunshine Coast Yesterday.

One is in life threatening danger while in custody.

Sunshine Coast, BC, April 17, 2002- Steve Kubby and Steve Tuck, both medical marijuana patients from the US, were taken from their family homes by police on the Sunshine coast early yesterday. Both came to Canada to escape persecution for the medicinal use of cannabis. The arrests followed recent media attention, which many believe caused increased pressure from the US tohave them sent back.

Steve Kubby has Phoechromocytoma, a rare form of cancer. He was given a prognosis of 6 months to live, 26 years ago. Steve Kubby is a medical miracle. Cannabis is the only medicine that controls Kubby's potentially fatal symptoms. The cancer causes the adrenal gland tissue to quickly replicate, and creates adrenaline levels 10-20 times those of a healthy adult. Cannabis prevents the replication of the abnormal cells and stops the secretion of the deadly adrenaline. If Kubby is held in custody without access to cannabis until Thursday, the day he is set to appear in provincial court, he may suffer serious or fatal health consequences.

Michelle Kubby, Steve's wife, is a force to be reckoned with.

"My husband is a walking time bomb. Cannabis is the only medicine that deals effectively with the life threatening symptoms of his disease. We are here legally, he is a legitimate medical patient being treated as a cross border criminal. It is irresponsible and unacceptable to put his life in danger because of a prejudice against a plant."

Steve Tuck has charges pending in California for the distribution of medical cannabis to patients who have the legal right to posses the forbidden medicine. He was wounded in the line of duty while serving in the US army. Tuck is being persecuted by both Canadian and United States governments for his use and advocacy of medicinal cannabis. The police took Steve Tuck to the hospital for medical attention after his arrest, before he was taken into custody in Vancouver.

The local community is outraged. Hilary Black, founder and spokesperson for the BC Compassion Club Society that distributes medical cannabis, is very aware of the political situation.

"These men and their families are caught in a civil war between the State of California, where the medical use of cannabis is legal, and their Federal government which is oppressing patients with all of their political might. We must not bow to US pressure to persecute these families. Steve Kubby is now a political prisoner who could die without access to cannabis. Are Canadians prepared to give Steve Kubby a death sentence?

He must be released immediately."

Here is what you can do to help:

1. If you live in the Vancouver area, please attend their hearing. It is set for this Thursday, April 18th at 9AM at the Immigration Courthouse, which is located at 300 W. Georgia street in downtown Vancouver. We are organizing a rally outside the courthouse. It is important that we pack the courtroom in order to show our support for Steve Tuck and Steve Kubby! Please join us if you can!

2. Call Immigration supervisor, Mr. Kanuit at 604-666-6790 and tell him that medical cannabis patient, Steve Kubby requires his cannabis medicine while in the custody of Immigration Authorities in order to keep his adrenal cancer under control. His life depends on it!

3. Please spread this information far and wide!

Thank you for your support! In unity & love, Renee Boje http://www.reneeboje.com rboje@hotmail.com (604)886-6662

Maybe we should all just expatriate.
Does Holland give political asylum for cannabist refugees?
