Bloomy's Half Baked Quote Used in Pro-Marijuana Ad |
Posted by FoM on April 09, 2002 at 11:21:41 PT By Kirsten Danis Source: New York Post Being mayor can be such a drag. A pro-marijuana group is using a pot-positive quote uttered by Mayor Bloomberg last year, in a new $500,000 ad campaign to be unveiled today. "Great. I'm thrilled," Bloomberg quipped sarcastically yesterday when asked about the ad after a joint press conference with the Fire Department. Bloomberg bluntly admitted to New York magazine in April 2001 he had smoked marijuana in the past - and definitely inhaled. "You bet I did, and I enjoyed it," Bloomberg said at the time. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws plans to plaster the ads throughout the city, urging the NYPD to stop locking up pot smokers. "I'm not thrilled they're using my name," Bloomberg said yesterday. "I suppose it's that First Amendment that gets in the way of me stopping it." NORML spokesman Nicholas Thimmesch said the group is not trying to embarrass the mayor. "This is not, ‘Gotcha!' We are very happy that the mayor expressed his experience with marijuana and said it in a favorable light. We're saying, ‘At last, an honest politician,' " he said. The Washington-based group wants the NYPD to stop cuffing and jailing people caught with less than 28 grams of pot. The users should get only a citation instead, Thimmesch said. You may remember me as the new guy that started getting his two cents in about this drug war thingy, eh? Here I am, in the LAND OF LINCOLN (Illinois, that is) with the best darned medical marijuana law on the books anywhere, I tried to get these guys to authorize something under this law, they TOOK MY LAW LICENSE AWAY AND COMMITTED FRAUD, PERJURY AND MAIL FRAUD TO DO IT! I started a web site (ILLINOIS-MMI.ORG) and now three weeks later it is gone (in 60 seconds or so it seems). So if anybody thought they might want to contact me or something, ITS TOO LATE. (Maybe I am just being delusional or something, OK?). Maybe it never even existed. Oh-there they are at the door-that door doesn't really exist, does it? These people don't really live or breath, this is just a flashback, right? PAY NO ATTENTION TO WHAT WAS POSTED ABOVE. WE HAVE THE SITUATION UNDER CONTROL. WE WILL CONTACT YOU WHEN MR. PETERSON IS CALM ENOUGH TO HAVE VISITORS. PLEASE GO ON WITH YOUR PERSONAL LIVES. PAY NO ATTENTION TO WHAT MR. PETERSON EVER SAID TO YOU. HE IS IN OUR CARE NOW. HE WILL DO AS WE SAY. MR. PETERSON IS DELUSIONAL. WE WILL CARE FOR HIM LIKE WE EXPECT EACH ONE OF YOU TO BE CARED FOR. THIS GREAT AND SOVEREIGN NATION HAS NO PLACE FOR SILLY LOCAL STATE LAWS THAT SEEM TO GIVE YOU PEOPLE RIGHTS OR SOMETHING. YOU MUST OBEY YOUR LEADER. THE LEADER IS WISE ALL PRAISE THE LEADER, THE LEADER IS GOOD, THE LEADER IS WISE, FOLLOW THE LEADER. GO BACK TO YOUR LIVES. END OF TRANSMISSION [ Post Comment ] |

She would have much prefered him to say "I had some youthful indiscretions, but I have found the Lord now.", or perhaps a total lie like "I smoked it but did not inhale." Would have suited her. Nothing about his comment was half baked. It was an honest answer to a simple question. He does not even seem to mind too much that NORML uses his quote. [ Post Comment ] |

MSNBC just talked about the ad on the news. When the Mayor thought about marijuana he grinned and when he said he was against decriminalizing his face took on a whole new sullen demeanor. Honesty is the best policy. The old school of prohibitionist politics is over. The ad that NORML did featuring your quote will help you. You have my support Mr. Mayor! Keep up the good work and help end the War on America's youth! [ Post Comment ] |

http://www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/mayor.html is the place to go to chastize Hizzoner and ask if he really meant to say: "I smoked and didn't get caught, you smoke and you go to jail?" The more that email him the better ...
