medical Today, faculty and students will have an opportunity to see and hear the effect of the university's government-sponsored marijuana field. Iowa native, George McMahon, 51, will speak on medicinal marijuana uses and how it saved his life.

McMahon, who has had 19 surgeries, was diagnosed in 1988 with Nail Patella Syndrome. At one point, he was given mere hours to live.

Having applied and been rejected for a government program that would allow him to smoke marijuana cigarettes, McMahon was finally approved in 1990. Since that time, he has received cigarettes containing marijuana grown at Ole Miss.

McMahon has requested to speak at the university to express his gratitude to the people who he believes have helped save his life.

"I am really grateful and I would like to tell the people of Mississippi," McMahon said.

Although marijuana does not actually treat McMahon's disorder, it aids in relief of symptoms associated with it, he said. And, while he is issued 10 marijuana cigarettes daily, McMahon wants to stress his support only for its medicinal value.

"People wonder, 'am I a pothead really?' No," McMahon said. "The arguments for recreational use don't compare to the medicinal ones."

McMahon will be accompanied by his long-time friend and supporter, Christopher Largen, and although McMahon has yet to receive permission by the proper university authorities to actually see the plot of land where his marijuana is grown, he expressed a desire to do so.

"He'd like to at least go up to the fence," Largen said.

The marijuana grown at the university is shipped to federal dispensaries where patients like McMahon, who must apply for the program every four months, get their supply.

He is now a resident of Texas, which has laws governing marijuana medicinal use. Although marijuana is grown here, Mississippi has no such laws.

"States around the country are willing to pass legislation for medicinal marijuana use," McMahon said. "I really want to tell (Mississippians) that they need to talk to their legislators."

McMahon will arrive today from Arkansas where he has continued to spread his message of the importance of medical marijuana.

"This was a life-saving thing for him," Largen said. "He just wants to tell his story."

McMahon said he will speak in Farley Auditorium at 2:30 p.m.

I've talked to George at the DrugSense Chat in the past. He's very nice. You said download the Mush Client. Is it easier then the normal one I use? I just type my name and sign in and then the fun begins. I don't get there often but always have a great time. It's the best chat on our topic on the Internet as far as I'm concerned. I go in through this link that is on the left side of C News's front page and click on DrugSense Chat then type in my name and press enter. It's easy for me. Is Mush hard to configure?

that's funny Ethan...
..I've always wondered about the quality of the government weed....some stem ridden seedy ditch weed that would barely be acceptable for making hemp rope out of,,,rolled in Zig-Zag Wheat Straw paper,,,two of them for each joint,,,thumb sized tunas....ya fire one of those babies up with a Zippo,or a wooden match,,and carelessly take a large greedy hit off the crude reefer,,and the cherry glows its way halfway down one side of the joint,,it smells like burnt cardboard as you pass it to you anxious friend,,,,he takes a big ol' toke,,and coughs it up...as he spasmodicly passed thejoint to the next guy,,a fresh seed does one of those smokestream things,(not all of you will know about what I mean),,,,then,,as the next guy takes a big ol' toke causing the huge glowing ember to light up his troll like face....POP..a seed explodes like popcorn,,sending a spectacular cascade of hot cherries into his lap,,the smell of singed upholstery fills the car,as the frenzied juveniles try to extinguish the hot spots....the crude joint is the same length as when it was rolled,,,but it is halfway hollowed out on one side, like some primitive miniature Jai-Lai thing....then,,the dome light is turned on,and the car is heavily fogged in,,and you turn to your friend, and notice that his eyes are really red,,,everyone starts laughing...someone turns on the radio,,and "The Game of Love" by Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders....oops,,looks like I may have wandered off topic,,,way out there......
..so,back to the government joints,,I've always wondered if they are machine rolled,,or if some hillbilly guys with two names,,Jerry Jeff and Billy Jay,,sit there all day and roll joints?...I've also imagined,,that perhaps the joints are rolled by pharmacists, maybe like some oriental guys with thick glasses,in white coats who have gone to school and learned how to roll proper,FDA approved joints, meticulously weighing out certain amounts,,putting whole plants into some cuisinart/chipper unit that makes it into a uniform green sand

NIDA Marijuana
NIDA marijuana is incredibly disgusting, with large twigs and seeds. A picture in in the Chronic Use article. When I have done lectures and show the slide, there have been gasps in USA, Spain, Germany, and Switzerland.

An uncommonly brave soul
whom you can meet usually on Sunday nights at the DrugSenseChat

http://www.drugsense.org/chat/

though I strongly suggest you download the MUSH client on the page, first.

I especially invite all you narks and antis; George will happily throw your craven lies back in your teeth...as will we all. If you have the guts to show, that is...

..I know what you mean EJ...
..I've often thought about whether anyone checks the claims of the low priced, plain label version of a multiple vitiman,,or some obscure anti-oxidant?..people imagine that the FDA is involved in measuring the ingredients in Wal-Mart multi vitimans...no way...the FDA is out playing golf with Mr Pfizer, and Mr Merck,at the Bayer country club...dddd

Saved by schwag!

They're probably hiding their schwag garden for good reason. Who knows what shape it's in... If it's a program they'd just as soon jettison, then why would they bother to do a good job of it?

If patients get their joints pre-rolled, then how are they able to assess the general health of the plant matter contained therein?

Modern processing makes consuming medicine more convenient, but it removes a layer of control from the patient in return for the convenience.

The interesting thing about plant marijuana as a medicine is that you can see what you're getting.

I have to take the word of my pharmacist that my thyroid pills really contain thyroid hormone. And actually the company that makes those pills is now in trouble because they seem to be unable to guarantee a stable potency for their product.

In pill form or other modern processed forms of medicine, you can pass off the equivalent of schwag as high potency and nobody knows until the effects of not getting enough medicine start to show.

..when ya think about it...
..it is a question that really needs to be answered....who will explain the mystery of the legal Marijuana users?,...So legal that uncle sam rolls joints for them!...I know,,I've heard the cheap explanation that says;"..they were approved before pot was made illegal..",,,and quite frankly,,that is a bunch of CRAP!...there is really no one availiable that is qualified to explain,,,nope,,the people who know how to explain it,,are the same people who are in the accounting division of the US military/defense executives,,and it would be a breach of national security to tell where hundreds of billions of tax cash is going.....so,,if your smart,,you will refrain from inquiring about the legal druggie potheads!....asking too many questions ,is a sign that a person may be involved with terrorist activities!...dddd

Pride
I am proud to know George, and he is a man of uncommon bravery. His story is available in the Chronic Use Study:

http://www.cannabis-med.org/jcant/russo_chronic_use.pdf

When George and the other "legal patients" were given cannabis by NIDA, they were all suggested to keep quiet, but many have become outspoken advocates.

George required intravenous narcotics to treat his pain in the past. Nothing worked. Now his only pain medicine is:

CANNABIS!
