FBI Steps in to Help Relieve Officers in Michigan |
Posted by FoM on September 03, 2001 at 12:01:14 PT By James Prichard, Associated Press Source: Associated Press A standoff with the owner of a Michigan campground known for its advocacy of marijuana entered its fourth day, with police enlisting the help of a third-party negotiator and with the FBI stepping in to relieve officers. The campground's supporters gathered near the site Sunday as police worked to end a standoff that has involved shots being fired at a news helicopter and police plane. "The word is out about what's going on," said Shirley DeWeese, whose brother, Grover T. Crosslin, owns the southwest Michigan campground called Rainbow Farm. "If they do kill him, it's not going to be the end." Neighbors said Crosslin, 47, who faces drug and weapons charges, was burning buildings on Friday on his property, which is the target of civil forfeiture proceedings. Deputies went to the farm after hearing about the fires. Police did not know who fired the shots that whizzed by an unmarked state police plane Saturday and struck the tail of an Indiana television station news helicopter Friday. Both landed safely. The FBI said Sunday night that federal agents would relieve officers from the Michigan State Police and Cass County Sheriff's Office, who have been at the site. Cass County Sheriff Joseph Underwood Jr. said Crosslin has made no demands. "It is the goal of all three agencies to resolve this matter peacefully," said John Bell Jr., special agent in charge of the FBI's Detroit office. Officers did not identify the third party assisting in the negotiations. Sheriff's Lt. Lyndon Parrish believed Crosslin was upset over a $150,000 bond revocation hearing he skipped Friday. The hearing was set because authorities believed he was violating terms of his release on charges of felony firearm possession and drug charges. Dori Leo, who identified herself to the South Bend Tribune as Crosslin's attorney, said her client was upset because a child he helped raise was placed in foster care following the charges. Crosslin and five others were arrested in May after a two-year investigation into allegations of marijuana use at the campground, just before it was to host a weekend event promoting marijuana legalization. A statement on Rainbow Farm's Web site says it "supports the medical, spiritual and responsible recreational uses of marijuana for a more sane and compassionate America." About a mile away from the campground, about a half-dozen people displayed placards in support of Crosslin and Rainbow Farm. "We were hoping for a peaceful resolution and they're bringing in choppers and artillery," said DeWeese. In order to bring more media attention to this tragedy we need to make a lot of noise. We need the likes of Gary Johnson, and Normal to attend the funerals and deliver the eulogies. We need to have thousands of people attend the services, so many people it overcomes the place, just like the police and firemen do. If this could happen the media cannot completley ignore this. If we get more media attention it can possibly help to educate the ones who need it. E-Mail Gary Johnson's office, and Normal, lets try to get them there. I will make several posts of this comment. Do not be angry or surprised if you see this again. I will post it in other places. Get up, Stand up, Stand up for your right. [ Post Comment ] |

I used to think, when I was younger, that the reason that 90% of the ads during the news were for medication, was because the news was full of bad news and anyone who watched it regularly could probably use something to make them feel better. Now I'm more prone to believing that the news is sponsored by the drug companies in such a major way so that they can exert their influence over certain stories in the news broadcasts themselves. "Don't put drug-law reform in too good a light or we'll lose Pfizer's sponsorship!" If this is true, it's more indirect than the ONDCPayola, and thus harder to counter. You'd think, with at least three 24hr news networks, they could find a lot of compelling stories of governmental abuse in the drug war... but in general, they don't. By the way, Richard Cowan said they were thinking about syndicating the Marijuana Headline News to radio stations around the country. I urge you to call or write your local cannabis-friendly radio stations and urge them to add the news to their format! [ Post Comment ] |

If this hasn't already been mentioned before, Winston Smith is the name of the main character of George Orwell's '1984'. This character goes from a non-thinking cog of the totalitarian government to a rebel and in the end, due to government scare tactics and torture, "returns" to his senses and becomes once again a tool of the government. So how is it, Winston? Are you a satirist or an open tool? [ Post Comment ] |

Freedom also for people that with the thinking of our lost souled brother, Winston. We should feel bad for people with the "Winston mindset" and try to educate them. Although this is a very tall order, I have tried it, and on occasion suceeded. It is very hard to do, and I will not give up. dddd is good at what he does, we can only hope that his words are heard well beyond this board where they need to be heard, all the way to congress. Tom Crosslin reminds me of the American Patriot Patrick Henry who said, "Give me liberty or give me death" (You can follow a link to the statement at http://libertyonline.hypermall.com/henry-liberty.html Americans are losing the right to free speech and the right to bear arms. Prison populations are 6 times greater in the U.S. than other industrialized nations. Now DEATH AFTER DEATH for a drug war gone awry the secret police, or the S.S. of the U.S. as I call them, are zeroing in and taking their score. Pity America. It is time to organize and act. May your future meetings go well at your next permanent farm. I think I may start a campground and invite G. Gordon Liddy to run his anti-anarchist group as an adjunct facility. Americans are losing the right to free speech and the right to bear arms. Prison populations are 6 times greater in the U.S. than other industrialized nations. The government has ways of pushing people until they go over the line. I pity the poor man who was killed and honor him. Contrary to popular belief, you are guilty until proven innocent if you are a common man in America. Vote Libertarian or Social Democrat. Corporations are whores, governments are their whips, and U.S. unions are the handles to the whips. Welcome to AmeriKa 2001. I think I may start a campground and invite G. Frankly, I'm stunned. I'm stunned at what is not happening.
A half dozen supporters supporters? Yeah! I noticed that too.
It isn't just about him. It's about Michigan. It's about the entire nation. Where are all the fine patriots? A million people standing quietly and peacefully nearby and praying for his victory would surely have some positive effect on the outcome of this horrible matter.
Where are the hundred thousand Michigan voters who signed the petition to put legalization on the ballot in Michigan?
If I were a Hemp activist (I have other priorities) going up against the gummint would be nothing compared to the challenge of trying to not be associated with the dopers. Get rid of the dopers and you could get hemp legalized in a few days. Those who stand to lose if hemp were legal probably send regular donations to High Times magazine (H-E double hockey sticks, they probably are the publishers). [ Post Comment ] |

Unless you want to eventually live under a totalitarian government and a gestapo police force, I strongly suggest voting for the Libertarian Party on the next Presidental election. I think it's time the government learns that the people should have personal responsibility, not the government responsible for the people. Free yourself America. In the short time I've known him, I've come to think of Tom as a very remarkable man. He had the vision, energy and resources to make Rainbow Farm a VERY special place. I have about 400 high quality digital photos, some including Tom, taken at Rainbow Farm last Season. He then went outside with a mini-14 and another person to look around the house. He spotted an FBI agent and took aim. The agent shot him and wounded the other person. I blame the FBI, but I blame the one who seperated them from God to begin with. We have 2 competing laws. One is mans laws which says to cage and kill cannabis users, and we have Gods laws which says that cannabis like all plants are good blessings for Food. When man lives with God, God is 1st in their lives, and that requires obeying the commandments of God. When a Godly man accepts the oath of any police organization, he accepts changing God from being 1st in his life to placing God 2nd or beyond. Police, FBI, CIA, et al. have had their souls seperated from them by oath. That brings displeasure to our Father. That man will place God other than 1st, along with all that comes when man does not place God 1st. Every one needs to realize that there is one who wishes to seperate you from your soul, and God our Father. It is important that you never let anything seperate you from our Father. Do you have any questions? It seems as though you have no trouble with the concept of caging humans for using cannabis. Think about that. It is difficult to comprehend for me. That concept seems like it could only manifest where there is lacking elementary compassion for the basic... What is wrong? Why do you hold on to such difficult notion? I know a pastor who told me marijuana killed his son, which explains where his disruption of reality comes from, yet cannabis or the M word equivalent is not what killed his son. Where does your seperation with reality come from? Do you feel safe enough to speak about it? If you ask you shall receive, and if not here, always think of our Father, whom promises through a clean robe that if you ask, He will answer. Take care of your eternal matters, for we don't know when it becomes too late. I bet you have many good qualities with in you and this does not coincide with your whole, wishing like us all to become better each day. It is better for you to accept me for using cannabis, for your own goodness, more than for my goodness. Let us see some of your compassionate side. [ Post Comment ] |

Hi Mr. Rabblerouser, I agree that following orders is no excuse. It is also not the reason either. The reason is that Congress and the President pass laws. The FBI is part of the executive branch. They enforce the laws as they are told to. The FBI is like the Army. You cannot blame the infantry man for the general's orders. The general does what the commander in chief tells him to do. Congress and the President are the problem. Hopefully public opinion will continue to change so that the politicians can rationalize taking actions that would otherwise get them unemployed. If the FBI agents all felt that drug users should be in jail but the laws said they should not be then the FBI would not be putting drug users in jail. They are pawns. Blame Congress. Blame the President. Even Clinton would only do what he thought he could without infuriating too many people. Thats why he waited until his last day in office to sign the International Criminal Court treaty. His heart was in the right place but his balls were not. ( I do not mean that sexually). Once Clinton was out of office THEN he said pot smokers should not go to jail. He had nothing to lose. Ford who had the balls to pardon Nixon and Carter who had the balls to pardon the draft dodgers were not reelected. That is the choice they face - do the right thing and lose the next election. Few do the really risky right thing. Especially with the drug issue because it gets used against them. [ Post Comment ] |

Hi Everyone, I wanted to make sure that you didn't miss seeing the program tonight if you want to. On CNN News they flash, I believe, a book that mentions the drug war. I'm only catching a little of what it's about. I haven't seen particulars on the web site yet. http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/greenfield/ Airs 10:30 - 11 p.m. ET Monday - Friday / Replays 1:30 - 2 a.m. ET When President Bush talks about compassionate conservatism, he's using a new adjective for an idea -- or set of ideas -- that has been a driving force in Republican (and therefore Democratic, too) politics for the last four decades. The man largely responsible for bringing conservatism into the public eye -- and to the political fore -- is William F. Buckley, Jr.. On Friday, we had a one-on-one interview with Sen. Joe Lieberman. Tonight, to bookend our holiday-weekend set of one-on-one interviews, we'll be talking with Buckley about conservatism then and conservatism now. Like "liberalism," "conservatism" has meant different things at different times. It meant one thing when Buckley started "The National Review." It meant something else when he started "Firing Line." It meant different things to Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan and, today, to George W. Bush. [ Post Comment ] |

It's a foregone conclusion that Crosslin can kiss all that land good bye (gads, just thinking about ppl. like that having so much...). Hopefully I will at least be among the first bidders. I can think of all kinds of really neat things to do with 34 acres. A camp ground for home schooled kids; they need somewhere to go through out the year. Or a nice big park; some place educational/recreational. A park for the 21st century. I shall contact Scott Teters office to see what I can do! [ Post Comment ] |

CNN is still covering it. It was announced to come on at the top of the hour this time. I hope no one gets hurt or I will be really upset. I want them to know we know what is going on and they better not hurt anyone. I'm not threating I'm just saying how I think it is. PS: I have had CNN on all day and they keep repeating it every half an hour or so. No new film footage though but still reporting. [ Post Comment ] |

I don't have cable, so I don't get CNN, so I don't know how much anybody else knows, but I just watched the local news and it looks like they're getting ready to move in. A farmer pulled up to the roadblock to try to milk his cows and the cops told him maybe in a couple of hours. Read whatever you want into that statement. They said some SWAT goons and an ambulence went down the road to the "compound" (their term, not mine) and came back out, but they couldn't tell if anyone was inside. Hope no one gets hurt. Is CNN covering this? How about the networks? I went to see Jay and silent Bob, and got back too late to see the network news. [ Post Comment ] |

The FBI?! What do they this is another Waco incident? Helicopters and artillery, is that what you call a peaceful resolution? I thought this country was built on standing up for what we believe in? But good ol' Uncle Sam has to shake his finger and condemn Mr Crosslin. Taking his child away is that the best solution? I thought I paid my taxes so these people can catch the real criminals. What they are saying is that Mr. Crosslin is a criminal of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. PRAISE CROSLLIN! [ Post Comment ] |

I totally agree that more people need to be there. Everybody is a patriot in words but not actions. I've never been to the campground and I don't know this man personally but I understand his frustration. I live in California and would be willing to buy a plane ticket to Michigan and stay there for the duration of this to show support. I've been doing what I can online but feel that it isn't nearly enough. Is there anybody out there that wants to start forming groups to go there to show support? [ Post Comment ] |

I also posted this note at another article here at Cannabis News. The other article said "dozens"...so my post said "dozens". I won't post it again...much as I want to scream it from the rooftops. ---------------------------------------------- Frankly, I'm stunned. I'm stunned at what is not happening. A half dozen supporters supporters? The man welcomed thousands of people onto his property. Where are they? The man is in a throw down with an impossible enemy. It isn't just about him. It's about Michigan. It's about the entire nation. Where are all the fine patriots? A million people standing quietly and peacefully nearby and praying for his victory would surely have some positive effect on the outcome of this horrible matter. Even ten thousand. Ten and twenty thousand people have been known to show up for sporting events and concerts. His life is on the line. The future of this country is at stake here. Isn't it? Where are the hundred thousand Michigan voters who signed the petition to put legalization on the ballot in Michigan? The nation will notice how many supporters he has, or doesn't have. The media will notice how many supporters he does, or doesn't have. This could be IT! It's time to do something instead of just talk about it. A half dozen supporters? [ Post Comment ] |

Poisoned1500DaysSoFr that is a very nice thought but the government has the right under current laws I'm sure but not positive and I don't think anything could change that right now. Forfeiture Laws fuel this war. [ Post Comment ] |

The FBI will not protect you if you are targeted by organized criminal groups ( based on my experience). But they are happy to put you in jail for consensual acts. Why do the Federal Police need to intervene in a local situation? I wish they would concentrate on protecting people. [ Post Comment ] |

With all the supporters that Mr. Crosslin has perhaps he could avoid a forfeiture be selling the property to the group of supporters that he has. When this blows over they could sell it back. If you sell a property it cannot be forfeited by the buyer can it? [ Post Comment ] |
