cannabis The Simpsons is getting ready to really push the envelope this season - with Homer getting hooked on marijuana. The smash Fox sitcom will also take potshots in parodies of the Harry Potter books and the movies Erin Brockovich and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Executive Producer Al Jean told the Cinescape Web site that The Simpsons, coming up on its 13th season, will definitely allow Homer and Bart to let their hair down.

"In one episode, Jane Kaczmarek of Malcolm in the Middle plays a judge who punishes Bart by shackling him to Homer," Jean said.

"In another, Homer gets his jaw wired shut and it makes him into a really decent, wonderful human being.

Then "there's a show where Homer gets addicted to medicinal marijuana, and one where Bart creates an Internet cartoon based on Homer, who becomes a laughingstock all over the world.

"And we have a show where Marge finds out that the sugar producers are trying to illegally pump sugar into all the Springfield food, and it's like Erin Brockovich."

Jean said Halloween will feature a special episode in which the Simpsons get a computer to run all of their home appliances.

"The computer develops a crush on Marge and wants to kill Homer. In the same episode, there's a Harry Potter satire timed to the movie," he said.

Jean also said the new season will continue the show's tradition of using celebrity guests.

Visiting stars will include Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Richard Gere, Pierce Brosnan, Dennis Weaver and Jon Lovitz.

Twentieth Century Fox is a division of News Corporation, which also owns Foxnews.com.

Simpsons abuse
I am also one who spends alot of time watching the Simpsons, kickaha.
It is outstanding.
I have often thought about the fact, that as cartoons, such shows can
get away with making alot of statements that would be too politically
incorrect for shows with actual actors to make, and the Simpsons has
used this factor in many ways.
I also think Futurama,(which is made by the creators of the Simpsons),
and King of The Hill, are great shows.

More specifically, its cable/print counterparts
Newsweek (owned by MSNBC), previously the bastion of prohibitionist thought, is slowly turning its sights toward at least reforming the drug laws. MSNBC has also begun to change its tune with regard to the war on some drugs. Of the big networks, I'm betting on NBC to latch onto anti-prohibition first. I think that its affiliation with the technology industry (Microsoft), which has profited nicely from many brilliant people who happen to enjoy the herb, has given it a slightly different outlook than the rest.

Some cable networks are also letting the anti-prohibition message get through, perhaps most notably CNN and its associated stations. Our movement is picking up steam quickly. We may soon see a major battle over prohibition vs. freedom taking place over the airwaves. In fact, I'd bet on it.

By the way, Kickaha, in retrospect I have to agree with your analysis. After all, Fox also brought us "That 70's Show."

Simpsons addict
The Simpsons never fail to make me laugh, even episodes i have seen numerous times. It is sly, witty, and politicaly incorrect. No sacred cows and stereotypes are embraced.

Kickaha, you forgot to mention the episode where Dr. Hibbard boots up Homer with morphine! Great fun!

Dan B. and Kickaha

Dan B: NBC? How so? I figured NBC was like all the rest. I agree about PI though, but since that is relegated to midnight and Bill Maher doesn't always talk about the drug war, I don't see the show as a saving grace for ABC.

Kickaha: No need to apologize. I think The Simpsons is capable of highly intelligent and witty comedy. And that's the perfect drooling noise. Takes you back to Homer the Food Critic and Lisa saying "I wonder what the English equivalent is for *mmmmmmmmmmaaaaaaalllgghh*?"

BY THE WAY: is anybody living in the SF Bay Area interested in heading to Seattle Friday? I want to go to the Hemp fest up there, but its a 12 hour trip from here, and I was looking for someone to drive or be a driving companion. My email is burnodo@onebox.com

Mmmmmaaaaglh! Medical Marijuana
I agree the phrasing in the announcement is unfortunate, but that's just a publicity flak trying to generate some press. The Simpsons has always been pretty subversive about drug use: Bart buys a bong (that he thinks is a pencil holder) at a flea market, and Homer is highly amused, saying he hasn't seen a bong in years. Mayor Quimby is shown watering a pot plant in his closet. A Police dog finds pot on a Blind Guy, but Officer Lou says it may be medicinal, and the cops have a party in an ostensible attempt to find out. Homer processes a whole crop of peyote into a health drink, and the town trips out. Homer trips out very amusingly on Guatemalan Insanity Peppers, Impersonates a nursing home resident and examines his medication for amusing substances, and resorted to Toad-Licking when trapped on an Island with no beer.

Hopefully this "Medical Marijuana Addiction" episode will be equally subversive. And yes, I spend far to much time watching The Simpsons!

Fox=Rupert Murdoch=Prohibition Madness
Remember that The Simpsons airs on Fox, and Fox is owned by Rupert Murdoch, who strongly supports prohibition. So, it should come as no surprise that the same guy who brought us such wonderful programming as "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire," "COPS," and "When Animals Attack, Parts I through MCLXXXVI" now brings us "Homer Gets Addicted To A Non-Addictive Substance."

Murdoch is suffering from an acute propaganda addiction. I pity anyone who actually believes anything that this man says or puts on the air. At least he has given us a new anti-prohibitionist slogan: "Boycott Fox!"

The only network that even remotely cares about the truth is NBC, and that has been a relatively recent development. And ABC barely squeeks by because it airs Politically Incorrect. Other than that, all network television needs a serious overhaul.
