Drug-Abuse a Problem in Colombia |
Posted by FoM on August 16, 2001 at 07:40:21 PT By Nick Writer, Associated Press Writer Source: Los Angeles Times After struggling for decades to stop its drug exports from reaching the hands of addicts abroad, Colombia is now trying to cope with a growing domestic drug-abuse problem. Surging heroin production in Colombia has made the drug cheaper and more available than ever before. Cultivation of heroin-producing poppy was almost nonexistent here a decade ago. Now, with about 15,000 acres being grown along the slopes of the Andes, Colombia is supplying about three-fourths of the heroin consumed in the United States. But much of it remains in Colombia. Colombia produces less than 2% of the world's heroin, much of it remains in Colombia, and America is the world's largest comsumer of heroin, yet this article claims that Colombia accounts for 75% of the American heroin market. They expect us to believe all of this, even though Colombian heroin was "virtually nonexistent" just 10 years ago, and America has had heroin addicts for many decades prior to that. I suppose if you believe that line of reasoning, you'd also believe that the United States is interested in Colombia because it wants to stop the drugs there. That's what they're counting on. I don't buy it for a second. Dan B [ Post Comment ] |
