justice Faced with a serious heroin problem in the 1990s, Australia considered a daring new approach -- prescribing heroin to addicts who had failed to kick their habits with other forms of treatment.

The idea had shown promise in clinical trials in Switzerland, reducing drug-related crime and slowing the spread of AIDS and hepatitis. But when the United States got wind of Australia's plans, it was not at all happy.

RE: a little math...
I've often seen the figure of 2-3 million "hard drug addicts" bandied about. This is supposed to mean regular heroin and cocaine users together, I think.

This journalist needs to get with the times...
This is some shoddy journalism, to say the least. The theory that the U.S. holds some sort of mystical sway over world drug policy is a little dated. The world, and Europe in particular, no longer gives a crap what Uncle Sam says. Witness the unceremonious dumping of the U.S. from the UN Drug Control Board.

One of the (few) pleasant side effects of the Bushlet's thumbing of his nose at the Kyoto and ABM treaties is that the world no longer feels compelled to obey the Single Convention on Narcotics treaties signed so many years ago.

Did you know that only 4 European Union countries still prohibit the personal use of cannabis? Don't let these Prohibtion cheer leaders fool you, the Drug War abroad is crumbling as we speak, and soon the U.S. will be left whizzing into the wind.

a little math...
(Although the number of U.S. heroin users has tripled, it is
still just 0.001 percent of the population.)

300,000,000 roughly the U.S. population...
X .01 (one percent)
= 3,000,000
X .001
= 3000 heroin users?

we are prone to jump on any error in math (in their favor)
by the anti's...in all honesty, we must point out those
which erroneously bolster our own arguments...what is the
correct number?

otherwise, this article is well written and points out the
idiocy of the U.S. position...i hope more countries ignore
the threats of a misbegotten U.S. administration...

Sums it Up
"The global war on drugs is now causing more harn than drug abuse itself."

That statement hit the nail right on the head.

Sickening
I am disgusted by yet another story of lives lost in a futile war. How can these travesties be permitted to continue. Let us suggest for the sake of discussion that someone is selling drugs and needed to be arrested (from the government's point of view). If they have the necessary warrants, what prevents the police from arresting the alleged perpetrator as he leaves his house to go to work, and then search his house for the alleged contraband. By talking to his "girlfriend" they would certainly know something about his habits.

2. Hard Feelings: Fatal Shootout in Marijuana Raid Reverberates in an Idaho County

On January 3rd, Jerome County Sheriff Jim Weaver got a tip that Eden, Idaho resident George Timothy Williams (known as Tim to his friends) was a major marijuana dealer. Wasting no time, Weaver that evening led a raid on Williams' residence. Within minutes, Williams and two Jerome County sheriff's deputies, James Moulson and Phillip Anderson, were dead, killed in a brief but furious firefight.

After the smoke cleared, police found four grams of marijuana in the home of what they continue to describe as a "suspected drug dealer."

"Tim was no drug dealer," Connie Chugg told DRCNet. "He liked to smoke a joint and he would keep himself supplied, but as for being a major drug dealer, that's absurd." Chugg and her husband Curtis, who describe themselves as Williams' "best friends," are still, six months after the event, deeply disturbed by their friend's death at the hands of local police.

They have reason to be disturbed. Williams was fingered by a new girlfriend, Mary Ann Taylor, according to press reports, but area residents familiar with Taylor, Williams and local law enforcement draw a darker and more detailed picture. "Mary Ann was a vulnerable woman," said one local resident who declined to be named. "She had a history of mental problems and drug problems and had already lost two children to the state. When the sheriff's people talked to her, they threatened to take away a third child if she did not provide information on drug deals," the source told DRCNet. According to press accounts, Taylor finally told sheriff's deputies she had observed a large quantity of marijuana at Williams' residence the previous evening. That was the basis for the fatal raid.

But other factors, also involving Mary Ann Taylor, were at play as well. According to press accounts confirmed by local sources, Taylor's former boyfriend had recently assaulted Williams in an incident recorded by police, and Williams, fearing for his physical safety, had armed himself. Friends of Williams also say he was hearing impaired

Amerika: Drug Bigot
This article is a searing indictment of our policies. We export our ideology, which is advanced by over-zealous hypocritical ideologues without a shred of scientific evidence to back their positions. I hope the world at large sees fit to follow their own plans to deal with the drug issues humanely and in accord with medical precepts.
