Agents Continue Probe Into Pot Farm |
Posted by FoM on July 14, 2001 at 10:12:10 PT By Yvette Urrea, Staff Writer Source: North County Times Narcotics officers were continuing their investigation Friday into the largest marijuana growing operation in the county in about 20 years. This week, members of the San Diego County Marijuana Eradication Team seized more than 46,000 budding marijuana plants from public land on a clandestine farm in a remote canyon south of Birch Hill on Palomar Mountain, Narcotic Task Force Lt. Bill Baxter said. The second-largest eradication case ---- one that led to the seizure of about 30,000 plants in the 1980s --- also occurred in North County, he said. Eradication efforts in the county have been in effect for 22 years, he said. Baxter said while the team covers the entire county, much of its work is in rural North County. He said the region's terrain and the availability of water and farmworkers make it prime temptation for people to grow illicit crops. Those areas in particular include Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rainbow, Valley Center and Palomar Mountain, he said. Often, the pot farmers splice into irrigation from avocado groves or other legitimate farms, Baxter said. In this latest case, the farmers created terraced corn row plots and used a natural water runoff drip-irrigation system for the plants since the area was so remote, he said. Agents saw at least three farmworkers tending to the 3-foot-high crop but were unable to apprehend them because of the rugged and steep terrain, Baxter said. It was impossible because of the layout and terrain of the mountainside to try to estimate the acreage of the plot, he said. The team's work is year-round, but it steps up in spring when people plant their new crops, Baxter said. These last few years, the team has had more time and resources allocated to the effort and it has seen the results in more plant seizures, he said. Marijuana is the No. 1 unreported cash crop in California and the second leading illegal drug investigated in San Diego County ---- second only to methamphetamine, he said.
