cannabis It started as water theft: Avocado ranchers west of Temecula said marijuana growers were tapping into their water lines. A multi-agency task force was assembled to stop the theft and locate and destroy the marijuana plants.

When the two-week program ended in May, authorities had seized 24,000 marijuana plants and made one arrest. The plants can be sold for $4,500 each when they reach maturity, officials said.

Well, these are all nice comments...

But Im really happy to hear BOZO is okay. I had to take an extra dose of asthma medicine just to calm myself down when I heard, erroneously, that he was dead. I just hope he isnt homeless, doing shelter gigs. Did his manager[s] rip him off? Does he have a place in Coral Gables? Or a trailer in the Florida panhandle...Is BOZO okay? I for one would like to help...

Some grow big, some grow small
It’s the strain of weed and growing conditions. For Mendicino County (one of the best areas to grow in the USA) one of the most popular strains of marijuana is called “Northern Lights”. In an outdoor environment with the right nutrients and care these plants easily produce 14-16 oz’s. Lookinside is correct; every now and then one plant will get enormous. It’s genetics, just like some people grow up bigger than others. If one is smart they take clippings from this unusual plant (before it buds) for clones and they get many enormous plants. Indoors can be more difficult but a big advantage to indoors is that growers will make the days artificially longer and release nitrogen into the growing area to produce outrageous results. Pontifex, don’t be discouraged. Indoors, in a closet and getting 4oz’s per plant is very good for the conditions. Back when I did grow in my closet (2’X5’) I could get 6-9oz’s every 6 months. Compared to others I’m but a rookie; still liked the results though.

I obviously suck at growing :)
Four pounds? From a tree 10' x 10' in size?

My lord. I'm dreaming of a White Christmas!

Unfortunately, my closet, though ample, could hardly
accommodate such a beast. Besides, I have a nasty
habit of overfertilizing my crops. But I will be conferring
with lookinside to glean some of his horticultural
wisdom.

Four pounds!! If I polished off an eighth every week,
that would be nearly a ten-year supply!

Of course they can. Even dandelions will sell for $4500 per plant if you can find an idiot willing to pay the price.

These plants will also grow up through the cracks in the sidewalk, free. Why don't they use that as a street value.

Wow, dddd, when I first read...

that BOZO was dead I was ecstatic! I just assumed it was GWB! But to the reality...BOZO will be missed, I just hope he went in his sleep, and didnt die as the result of internal injuries he suffered when his clown car ran into a Port-o-John. But than again, BOZO might have wanted to go like thjat....

OK, I'm confused...
Pontifex said he's lucky to get 4 ounces, Imprint thinks 14 - 18 ounces of dried bud, and lookinside says his best was 4 pounds!

Which is it? I'm not a grower or anything so I'm curious, but 4 ounces to 4 pounds is a large gap.

CongressmanSuet: Bozo did not die...he was cancelled.

lookinside: all i can figure is the dealers charge cops alot more...

LOL!

quantity and cops ...
value estimates...

largest plant i ever grew yielded 4 pounds...i started it
from seed in november, indoors...placed it outside in the
garden in late march to finish topping for a small
crop..(around 2oz.) topped it, and watched it bush out to 10
feet wide and 10 feet tall by october 15th..
overall, my average yield on clones planted in april was
about 8oz...

when i was busted in 1998, i had a total of 4 pounds of my
wifes medicine hanging drying or finishing in the garden...
the cops told the newspapers that the value was $88,000...

all i can figure is the dealers charge cops alot more...

Gee, dddd, for a second...

when I first heard that BOZO had died, I was ecstatic, because I just assumed they were talking about GWB! But, now I find out it was the HONEST BOZO that has died, and, yes, I too spent some time on the floor watching BOZO, and am greatly saddened by news of his passing. I hope it was peaceful and dignified, I for one wouldnt like to find out he died of injuries he sustained when his clown car ran into a Port-O-John, though, I bet BOZO wouldnt have minded a demise as ridiculous as such....Good bye BOZO.

24 THOUSAND plants!!
it doesnt matter if you're in the rain forest, their is no way to hide 24,000 plants. im sorry, but that's impossible. what about air surveillance? the only reason they were busted, is because they used someone else's water....and then they soaked them all in chemicals and buried 'em........i wonder if that's the same thing they did to the constitution??? what a country, low wages, high taxes, and the persecution of the innocent.

Seeds
My government must send me some of those good seeds that they claim they can make so much money on or off of one plant. How would they know? They need to grow and tell. These people must be acting when it comes to pot. Set my people free!........Love, j

What was the real crime here?
If grown correctly mature female plants will produce 14-18 oz’s of dry bud per plant. I’ve seen them, folks in Mendicino County do it every year (indoors and outdoors). But I don’t think number of plants vs. quantity is the issue. There was a property crime. Someone stole someone else’s water. Regardless of what crop was grown, the theft of water is wrong and the perpetrator should pay for it. This is the real crime described in this article and totally overlooked by the police and author. This is the cloud that the war on drugs has created. Law enforcement is so focused on marijuana that they aren’t seeing and perusing the real crimes. Instead the person that was caught for stealing water will be placed in jail for years for cultivation. This person will not be able to earn any kind of living and as a result will not be able to reimburse the victim for their lost property or wages. Further, as we already know, if marijuana was legalized the value of it would plummet thus virtually eliminating these kinds of crimes.

Bloating the numbers

I agree Pontifex that such a yield from a plant seems out there, but the monetary value seems close. For top of the line pot around here, I pay $60 an eighth. That would make 10 ounces net $4,800.

Remember that this was a bust. If they say that 24,000 plants represented only a few hundred dollars in street value per plant, they can't get their high-dollar kickbacks from the DEA.

It's funny, the only illegal drug that the feds have managed to drive the price up with is marijuana. They're still not curbing its use...just driving users into paying overly inflated prices.

On an Off-Topic note: Goodbye Bozo the Clown! I am glad I got to watch you when I was a kid!

More fuzzy math
You might be able to sell a mature female for $4,500 --
but not to the FBI!

Let's trot out the abacus again. $4,500 is about a
pound and a half wholesale at $250/oz. (After all, you
still have to cure it). That would mean each of these
plants yields 18 ounces of dried cannabis!

Either something is drastically wrong with my own
growing technique -- I'm lucky to get 4 ounces from one
pampered female -- or the DEA is inflating the street
value of their seized property again.

Hmm, I wonder which?

Do the Math
"The plants can be sold for $4,500 each when they reach maturity"

This is a laugher, but let us suppose it is true. What is it going to cost to eradicate a product that is so valuable? I will answer: all the money in the world will not be sufficient.

The way to eliminate the crime is by defining it not to be a crime. We can suddenly eliminate the black market, reduce personal and property damage, slash expenditure for prisons, free up law enforcement to deal with violent criminals, restore personal freedom in the workplace, and regain the respect of our youth. Nothing less will do.
